I think it is painfully hilarious in a really horrible way that the first outsider to ever see Din’s face is a bunch of Imperials

His life is so unfair. He is brutally lonely, barely making ends meet, and devotes all his time to a job that clearly gives him no satisfaction in order to support his people, who have been forced to live in literal sewers to survive. Even within the short span of the show, the Empire has taken beskar, his entire covert, his ship, and his child from him. He is forced into humiliating and vulnerable positions just to survive but he never complains because that’s just been what the shape of his life has been like since he was a child.

And what should have been a gesture of deep emotional intimacy and trust - the act of literally and figuratively baring yourself to another person - is now something he has to do in front of a bunch of people who explicitly want to see him dead by virtue of his identity. And even though all of those people die in short order, the only person left who has seen his face in canon is a guy he doesn’t even fucking like. Mayfeld is a two-faced, ex-Imperial asshole whose only function for Din is a stepping stool to getting his kid back. Even if they found some surface-level camaraderie by the end of their mission, Din still has to live with the fact that Mayfeld has seen his face and there’s nothing he can do about it.

Like so much of his life he has had to keep closely guarded because everyone wants to steal it away from him, and in the end he can’t even have his own reflection to himself. He has been forced to share it with people he fucking despises in order to get back something else that was stolen from him. There is nothing sacred in his life no matter how badly he wants there to be, and he just has to put up with it because that’s what he’s always had to do to survive.
