ā ā One of Merrillās favorite hobbies was people watching, especially at taverns. This was no Hanged Man, it was much fancier and higher class, but it worked just the same. Sheād brought her little stack of reading material with her, as she always did, and took time between pages to glance up at whoever was passing by.
ā ā A few peopleās outfits caught her eye, but one flashy stranger in specific made her actually set her book down. She knew it was rude to gawk, but she couldnāt help it! Leaning over her table slightly, she waved a hand at them to catch their attention.
ā ā ā Pardon me, but I love your tail! ā A genuine smile spread on her face as she threaded her fingers together,Ā āĀ It suits you very well!Ā ā

ā āMerrill had seen her fair share of libraries in her time, but none of them were half as impressive as the one here in Spirale. It was a large, sprawling structure, with rows of shelves that seemingly went on forever. Someone could easily get lost in there if they werenāt careful!Ā
ā ā To be honest, Merrill felt a lot like a kid in a candy store, especially once she discovered the section dedicated to magical tomes. It seemed this library was at least partially funded by donations, but she never expected to find anything like this. In Thedas, books like these would stay locked up in Circle Towers, never for her (or other Mages) to access... But here, they were open to everyone! What luck!
ā ā Or, she would be lucky, if they werenāt so damn high up. Many of the books sat outside her reach, but one with a bright white binding on a lower shelf caught her attention. She tried to be practical about it initially, but eventually, she found herself leaned up against the shelf and standing on her toes, huffing as she tried to reach. She didnāt get the book, but she did earn herself a hearty wobble from the shelf itself.
ā ā ā Oh dear... ā She squeaked, struggling to hold the weight of the huge wooden piece up now that it was practically leaning on her. Merrill looked around in a panic, thankfully catching sight of someone two rows down.
ā ā ā Excuse me! ā She called out over her shoulder, probably louder than she shouldāve, ā Could you please give me a hand!? ā

ā ā There were many things about this place that Merrill couldnāt understand. Initially it was rather distressing, but as the weeks drew by, it dulled to something closer to confused bewilderment. In her own way, she was almost starting to get used to things, but this city seemed to always have new things for her.
ā ā From her ground floor window, she idly watched her neighbors across the street decorate their housing. Fake webbing and bats in doorways had quickly become a common thing on her street, and every now and then, sheād even see someone in costume! How fun!
ā ā The longer she sat there at her windowsill, the more intrigued she became. Was a festival happening? Was this a holiday? She didnāt know, but she wanted to! So, she took to leaning out of her window, hoping to catch the attention of a passerby so she could chat their ear off with questions. No doubt she looked silly, but if it took nearly falling flat onto the sidewalk to get someone to not ignore her, then so be it!

itās a rare day when all of the people he shares a residence with are out going about their activities at the same time, but his peace and quiet is soon cut into by the sound of someone walking about the floor outside, back and forth, lingering.
fenris is ready to tell the offending individual to leave, but he opens the door to merrill instead of a stranger. anger is quick to dissipate into mild irritation, and he sighs.
ā you would have worn holes in the floor, had you kept pacing,Ā ā he says, but he is not harsh with her. he hasnāt seen merrill since the battle some months back. the look on her face alone is enough to tell fenris that she has yet to adjust. itās understandable; he hasnāt either, and merrill has an exacting talent for getting lost.
even mired in his tendency to avoid spending time with her in kirkwall, fenris knows that she errs on the side of absentminded and anxious from time to time.
ā i wonāt ask how you found out where i live. am i correct in my assumption that you need help? ā
ā ā Admittedly, when the door swung open and she was met with Fenrisā less than pleased visage, her shoulders tensed. Last sheād seen him was on a battle field with chaos booming around them, which was, shockingly, very different from sitting in a painfully quiet hallway. Here, she had no reason to duck away or try and escape the conversation. No distractions, just her stuck staring at him like a Halla caught in a hunterās crosshairs. How pathetic.
ā ā Merrill braced herself for a talking to that never came, and when she was instead met with concern, she shakily let out the breath sheād been holding much too long.
ā ā ā How could you guess? ā She asked, the absolute faintest smile twitching onto her lips,Ā ā Creators willing, iād love to be out of your hair and not bother you at such an awful time, but...Ā ā
ā ā She took to awkwardly shifting on her feet. If she was being honest, she was surprised he didnāt slam the door in her face before talking to her. Half of her didnāt think sheād even get this far... Fenris wasnāt exactly on her side in most things.
ā āāĀ Umā If you wouldnāt mind, I would very much so like to come inside. IāIĀ promise itās only for a short while!Ā āĀ Her grip on her satchel's strap was tight as a vice. Poor thing was definitely desperate, just short of begging the man. And Merrill begging for anything is never a fun sight.

Thatās going to take some getting used to. He feels like heās been dragged back to the dark age of pre-spacefaring civilization, with how slow and unreliable most of the technology in Spirale is. Seeing (or rather hearing) an old-fashioned Terran car for the first time was enough to give him a minor heart attack.
āSorry about that.ā He pockets the device with a lopsided smile.Ā āYou mind pointing me in the direction of the Archimedes Ward? Thatās all I need, reallyāapparently Iām supposed to be living there.ā
Heād rather not be shoved into a glorified cell with anyone who isnāt Wojteska, but, the masterminds behind this place donāt care for his comfort. Clearly. Theyāve proven as much already, several times over.
ā āA frown crested over her face. Dead? What a sad way to say broken! That only made her feel worse for not being able to help, like sheād somehow been an orchestrating factor in the demise of this little box. Not a fun thought.
ā āā Oh no, itās alright. I just wish I couldāve lent you more of a hand! ā Merrill clasped her hands together, frown turning to a slight grimace at the idea of being asked for directions,Ā āĀ Unfortunately, iām even worse at navigating than I am at fixing things, especially in a place as loud and busy as this. Though I do believe weāre already in Archimedes! Last I heard, at least.Ā ā
ā ā Another car screamed passed the two, making Merrillās ears lay flat against her head in a twinge of pain. Being lost for two days was bad enough already, but the added disorientation was not helping. Well, if this stranger was leaving, why not see if she can tag along? Maybe then she can finally figure some things out!
ā ā āĀ Please forgive me if this is rude, but, umāĀ If youāre going to be heading to a quieter area, would you allow me to accompany you? I donāt feel safe with all these humans around, so I havenāt had a chance to get my wits together.Ā ā

He takes a step back and raises his hands, expecting the worst. Fortunately, the stranger seems as apologetic about being startled as he is about startling her. He supposes he should count his blessings for that. The last thing he needs right now is the local law enforcement called on him because he dared come within five feet of the wrong person.
āOK, soā¦ā Gharet shuffles a little closer, turning so that his companion can see the screen.Ā āIf this is like the communication devices we have back home, this should be easy. Hopefully.ā
Heās unaware that the phone was drained of its battery some hours ago, or how foolish he looks hunched over the non-functioning device. A car turning the corner beside them makes him flinch and pin his ears back against his skull at the sudden loud noise.
āIf you see an icon that looks like a gear, tap thatāitāll open the settings.ā
ā ā Smiling apologetically, she lets her shoulders relax. She was the last person to judge other non-humans on their appearance. Thatād make her one hell of a hypocrite, wouldnāt it!
ā ā Merrill listens to his explanation as best she can with all the noise, and when presented with the device, she leans forward to get a better view. Sheās deeply focused on it for a solid 15 seconds, and eventually, her head cocks to the side.Ā The device surely looked interesting, but she couldnāt make much of a blank screen!
ā ā ā Well, umāĀ I certainly donāt see anything that looks like a gear. The front is just totally black! ā Merrill frowns, futzing with her satchel,Ā ā Is it... broken? I donāt have the best history with fixing broken things.Ā ā

ā ā What if he wasnāt home? What if this wasnāt even the right place and whoever gave her directions was just trying to make a fool of herself? Merrill had been pacing around the floor of some Cotes brownstone for about 10 minutes now, worriedly wringing her hands and going over the possible ways she could humiliate herself by knocking on this door.
ā ā It was no secret at this point that she was lost and confused, anyone could see that. Disoriented from all the new assaults on her senses, she could hardly even tell which way was up sometimes! She needed help, and who better to get it from than someone who didnāt like her. Seeking out Fenris and bothering him was certainly less scary than putting her trust in humans she didnāt know.
ā ā ā The worst heāll do is give you an earful. Heās done it before, you can handle that! Come on, Merrill, stone up!Ā āĀ She said aloud to herself, face scrunched up with determination.
ā āĀ Clutching her satchel tight, she finally put her foot down (literally) and turned on her heel to face the door. She could do this! She had to do this, or else sheādā
ā āĀ As her hand was about to make contact, the door to the apartment sheād been stomping around outside of swung open with quite the force. Well, so much for knocking!

Understanding Spirale and his reason for being here would be a lot easier if he could access any information regarding the placeāthey gave him some kind of pamphlet when he arrived, sure, but he canāt read it.

He canāt read the street signs, either, and he doesnāt recognize any of the landmarks. He has no idea where he is. Thereās no trace of keln influence anywhere in the infrastructure. For the past three days heās been surviving on the streets, but a combination of hunger and simply wanting to sleep in an actual bed has led to him swallowing his pride and asking for help.
The keln clears his throat, and politely taps a woman on the shoulder to catch her attention.
āHey. Do you know how to switch this thing to voice input?ā He has his phone in his other hand, and waves it at her helplessly.Ā āIād do it myself if I wasnāt, well, blind.ā
ā ā ā Think, Merrill! Think!Ā ā
ā ā Did these streets ever stop winding? It certainly didnāt seem like it. Poor Merrill had been lost for the better part of a few days, and though she wasnāt unused to living on the lamb, this was starting to get ridiculous. The sounds, sights and smells combined with the reality that she had no idea where she was made navigating quite a chore. A few kind people had given her directions, but...
ā ā She was in the middle of beating herself up over not remembering a street name when his hand met her shoulder. Reflexively, she let out a half squeak half scream and jumped a few feet in the air, nearly dropping her satchel of things on the ground in the process.
ā ā ā Goodness me!Ā āĀ The elf clutched at the strap of her bag, trying to regain herself after her little heart attack,Ā ā Sorryā I didnāt mean to scream, you just frightened me is all...Ā ā
ā ā Glancing down at the phone in his hand, she cocked her head to the side. Oh, yes, these things. She didnāt know what these things were called, but sheād played with hers a bit. Wonderful and confusing gadgets, thatās for sure.
ā ā ā Oh! Well, iād be happy to try and help at least. Iām certainly no expert on technology.Ā ā
ā ā Cities, cities, cities.Ā
ā ā Merrill was starting to get sick of cities. Maybe it was just her momentary confusion of once again waking up in a strange place getting to her, but cities rarely had any good in store for her. Just more problems.
ā ā Though, Kirkwall certainly wasnāt a city like this one. Sheād awoke in front of her apartment, much to her dismay. The sight of cars frightened her, and all the new noises around her strained her sensitive hearing. What a dreadful place! How could anyone live in these kinds of conditions, wouldnāt they go mad?Ā
ā ā ā Ghilan'nainās grace, what have I gone and gotten myself into now!Ā ā She asked herself as she ducked into an alleyway. Sheād need some time to sort herself out before venturing into this strange new place.

Sorry for the (somewhat) unannounced hiatus. I had IRL stuff going on, and itās just been a huge ordeal to balance that and my blogs, but itās all sorted now and iām ready to dive back in. Iāll be PMāing folks to see if I can pick up any old threads in a bit here.

the warriorās movement is fluid, and he is quick to give merrillās magic a wide berth as she strikes the ground.
fenris hits his combat rhythm soon after merrill ensnares the demon, and it becomes so intent on freeing itself from the remaining roots that it leaves itself vulnerable. he dashes to take advantage of the opportunity, using all of his might to plunge his greatsword into the tendons of the monsterās knee. the force is enough that the tip of the blade pierces through the other side.
with a howl, the pride demon falls into a crackling huddle on the ground; while immobilized and injured, it is still aliveĀ ā and it is very angry. its horns spark again as it attempts to charge, and it takes large swipes at fenris when he tries to close in once more, forcing him to back off.
ā ā Merrill winces again as she hears the distinct sickening pop of knee bone and tendon. Sheād been fighting things for years now, but sheād never get used to how gruesome things could get, especially in Fenrisā hands. Heās good at his craft, something she observes as the beast falls to the ground.
ā ā It takes a few more deep breaths for her to focus her magic again. She clenches her fist, and like clockwork, the tendrils on the remaining leg bury themselves in the beastās leg. They move beneath the skin and chitin, taking a firm hold as more tendrils burst from the earth and take a weak hold on one of itās massive horns.
ā ā Sheād already been running low on lyrium at the start of this battle, and all the casting sheād been doing threatened to leave her dry. Soon, sheād need to turn to slitting her palms and she knew that, but for now, this was an opening.
ā ā āĀ Fenris, I-Ā I donāt know how long I can hold it without recasting!Ā ā

ā iāve only just arrivedĀ ā perhaps that is miraculous. we will have plenty of time to talk when this is over. ā
the pride demon begins channeling its lightning, and fenris responds accordingly. his markings flare to life as he enters his ghost-like state, intent on drawing the monsterās attention away from merrill so that she can cast from relative safety. he can only hope it wonāt round on her once she starts.
when the demon discharges, the lyrium causes the bolts to glance, and he is able to absorb some of the energy for a later pulse. fenris directs his blows toward the gaps in chitin on its legs, with intent to bring it to the ground.
ā āĀ ā Understood!Ā ā
ā āĀ Ā Victory over this demon now at least felt plausible to her. She'd spent her own fair share of time dwelling on how she wished their relationship was smoother, but right now, she couldnāt be happier to see him. He was a force to be reckoned with, and really, it just felt nice seeing someone she knew.
ā āĀ Ā Taking a deep breath, she spun her staff into a proper stance. The focus crackled green with life, and once she was sure Fenris was safely out of the way, she slammed it down onto the ground. From the spot, ancient roots sprung forward to ensnare the beastās ankles, tightening and tugging to make it easier to topple.
ā āĀ Ā Faltering, the beast threw itās horned head back and let out an ear splitting roar, making Merrill wince and partially lose her focus. The roots snapped off one foot in response, sending splinters flying and letting it gain some mobility back. The other foot was still tethered, however. Theyād have to act fast.

of course, his return to the strange island city would be punctuated by another cataclysm. the memory is a bit faded, but he can recall clear enough how monsters ran amok last time. now, however, they make their approach from the sky rather than from beneath the earth.
fenris is quick to take up the arms he is provided; there are bound to be those who cannot defend themselves against this new onslaught. he doesnāt need his critical eye to know that these people are fighting for their lives.
the smaller creatures are dispatched with little difficulty, and openings for other warriors are created in fenrisās wake. what finally draws his attention from smaller distractions is a resounding impact some distance away, something larger hitting the ground with a roar. he turns toward it, and catches the distinct silhouette of a pride demon.Ā
a beast of its caliber should not be allowed to run rampant on the battlefield.
its focus is elsewhere, so fenris takes the opportunity to close the gap. what he doesnāt expect is to see someone from home, and it causes him to stop in his tracks.
ā ā At this point in her life, Merrill was sick of apocalypse scenarios. Sick of the sky falling, and sick of innocent lives being put at risk. She never thought sheād experience something that had a more grim looking outcome than what happened at the Chantry, but the Creators loved to surprise her. ā ā Sheād been running back and fourth over the battlefield, doing what she could to help when and where it was needed. It was chaos every which way, and she could feel herself starting to get overwhelmed with the situation. And that was without the Pride Demon suddenly dropping from one of the sky portals mere yards from her. The sound of it hitting the ground was familiar in the worst way, sending a spike of dread into her heart. ā ā Merrill fights the urge to linger in her spot, instead opting to pull Vir Tasallan from itās place on her back and let her magic run through it. She breaks for the creature, sliding and stumbling slightly down a small hill, fully intending to take it on by herself before she notices the other. Based on the look on his face, he caught sight of her before she did. ā ā There wasnāt time for a happy reunion, she knew that, but she couldnāt fight the look of shocked, yet pleased, bewilderment on her face.Ā ā ā ā I prayed to the Creators for a miracle, but this certainly wasnāt the one I was expecting!Ā ā

as soon as he said that, he felt a twinge of regret. this place was weird and full of people weird powers, but maybe spouting off about his lycanthropy was a bad idea. this woman seemed more accustomed to this sort of lifestyle than milos was, however, so maybe she wouldnāt find it as weird as most people would.
either way, milos just tried to calm himself, relaxing his stance a bit and folding his arms.
āsorry, this isā¦a lot. my nameās milos. iām sure there are plenty of nice people somewhere around here, but iāve had more trust issues than usual lately with people being able to shoot fire out of their hands and everything.ā
the thought crossed him that maybe heĀ could shoot fire out of his hands too, but there was no way he felt comfortable trying that. not yet. not around buildings and civilians.
ā ā At the mention of his Lycanthropy, she tensed slightly. Werewolves were a concept she was very familiar with, and was something that frightened her. However, sheād never heard of a version of the curse that involved reptiles. Perhaps someone in this strangerās bloodline really upset a dragon! She wasnāt sure, but based on the fact that he wasnāt actively mauling her, sheād give him the benefit of the doubt. Who was she to judge someone based on a magical affliction?
ā ā ā For me, this is normal! Or, well, relatively I suppose. There are little differences.Ā ā She gave a half-hearted laugh, before shifting on her feet anxiously, ā But if this isnāt normal for you, I can only imagine how it must feel. Iām sorry no oneās been able to give you answers.Ā ā
ā ā When he brought up a discomfort with magic, she frowned a bit. People being afraid of magic wasnāt new to her, not in the slightest, but it still made her sad. She knew that magic didnāt have the same political connotations in this world as it did in hers though, so she felt a little more alright with being open about her profession at least.
ā ā ā Fire magic is quite interesting, actually! Iāve studied it extensively, and itās very useful for things like lighting, and keeping warm. Itās not all scary, I donāt think! ā She punctuated herself with an embarrassed look, shifting on her feet again, ā Oh, Iām rambling. SorryāĀ But, Milos is a very nice name. Aneth ara!Ā ā

she probably didnāt. if she was anything like the other few people heād talked to, she was just as bought into this fantasy world as the rest of them. milos sighed and scratched his head, winching when he dug too deep with his claws.

ā āMerrill listened to him vent with a pensive look on her face, leaning her weight on her Mageās staff. He had a lot of questions, and unfortunately for him, she didnāt have a lot of answers. At the very least she could help him calm down a bit, though.

ā ā Sheād long since pieced together that this wasnāt Thedas. There were a lot of similarities, but the differences were so stark and contrasting that there was no question about it. There was a lot of scary, powerful magic in play here. It was easy to lose your head in all of it.
ā ā ā But, oh, you certainly donāt have to wander around alone. Plenty of people here are kind and willing to give boarding.Ā ā Merrill flashed an encouraging smile, before blinking in small realization,Ā ā Ah, iām so rude. My name is Merrill, whatās yours? ā

HEāD BEEN avoiding people for the better part of two weeks, not sure who or what he could trust, why he was here, or, frankly what the hell was happening. it was nearly impossible to tell from a distance who was safe to even talk to, and it seemed as though most people regarded him with the same caution. not that it wasnāt justified, since right now milos looked like someone had frozen him in the middle a full moon transformation. as it turned out, looking like half a crocodile at all times was neither easy nor comfortable.
his tail (yeah, he had that all the time now, how fun) was dragging behind him as he made his way to what he assumed to be a town. itās not like he had any money, he didnāt even know what qualified as money here, but maybe he could convince someone to let him sleep indoors this time. some building, it looked like a library, was closest to the outskirts of the town, and milos set his sights on that.
rounding the corner of the building and cautiously stepping onto the street in front of it, milos turned to see one person who lookedā¦mostly normal. most people didnāt have pointed ears or face tattoos, but beggars canāt be choosers.

heād had a PLAN, but it went out the window when he opened his mouth. he had no idea what to ask here.
ā ā Merrill had learned quite a bit these past few days. This specific town was more... welcoming towards Elves than others have, and that made gathering information on the wider situation a bit easier. The building in question was, in fact, an old, dusty library that sheād been a patron to multiple times now. Nice enough place!
ā ā Sheād propped herself up against the side of the building, sitting on the cobblestone path to read whatever old tome sheād gotten her hands on this time. Merrillās bad habit of getting engrossed in her reading material made her not even realize that Milos was there at first. When he spoke, she jumped in slight surprise, pulling her ears back flat against the side of her head.
ā ā ā Huh, whatāĀ Oh. ā
ā ā She casted a long look up at him, cocking her head to the side. To her, he looked like he was half dragon, and that was incredibly interesting. Sheād put her curiosities aside for now, though.
ā ā ā Of course! What is it you need help with? ā Closing her book, she came to her feet,Ā ā Are you lost? You look a little lost. Iām afraid iām not the best navigator.Ā ā
