The problem with studying the deep ocean is that humans need light to look at things, the depths of the ocean are extremely dark, and what lives there is accustomed to spending most of its time in that darkness. So when we go down there with submersibles and turn on Big Lights to see, we invariably and dramatically alter what's going on, in the same way that it's generally difficult to observe the natural behaviors of terrestrial animals if you whip out a megaphone and shout HEY GUYS WHAT ARE YOU DOING at them first.
A humble snubnose eelpout on its way to the whale fall buffet when some nearby humans give it a quick, unintrusive study:
I put this in the comments but feel it needs a reblog- Check out some of Dr Edith Widder’s work on light in the deep sea! Among other things, she used the bioluminescence of stoplight fish to deduce wavelengths which most deep sea animals can’t perceive and used that to create light filters to be able to film with minimal disturbance! And that’s how we got 25 minutes of giant squid footage!!!!
I love episodes of Game Changer where the only way to win is by learning & the only way to learn is by playing. With some episodes, like Don't Wake Standards & Practices, the overall flow of the game becomes pretty apparent pretty quickly, & also there's some surprises along the way. But then there's episodes like Count the Rice, Deja Vu, or Bingo, where the basic conceit of what the game even is is an ongoing mystery. I love that stuff.
its fun to remember we can use the big text if we want. bonjour motherfuckers. i'm posting loud as hell now.
hey everypony. can you direct me to the nonfiction birding books. thanks.
pirates of the caribbean has one million billion problems but I do appreciate that it consistently murders the men in elizabeth's life for the benefit of her character development instead of the other way around I know this is because she's one of like two and a half female characters in the series but I'll take any win from these movies thank you very much
One of the compelling things about Project Hail Mary is that you can't fix it.
"What if Stratt didn't force Grace to go?" Then the Earth dies.
"What if Yao and Ilyukhina had survived?" Then they all would have died in space, not enough food to get to Earth or Erid
If the Taomoeba hadn't escaped then Grace would have never seen his best friend again. Returning to a world he loves but no longer recognizes.
If the stars weren't dying then Grace never would have met his best friend at all. Living content but alone.
Project Hail Mary is a hopeful story. It is a story of friendship and what it means to be brave. It's a story about saving the world.
But you can't remove the tragedy of the story without making it unrecognizable. It's written into the bones.
Imagine Grace's students keeping a quote book of insane things he'd said, either corny jokes, out of pocket anecdotes or completely nuts life advice, because let's face it he was probably an insane teacher to have. A few of his more dedicated students working so hard to compile it and give it to him at the end of the year, but not being able to because he spontaneously leaves with no explanation (aka gets kidnapped by Stratt to work on the project)
Imagine being those kids, being gutted about not getting to give it to him, but keeping the notebook and kind of just moving on with life. And then after however much time passed (which I assume has got to be at least a year or two) you see on the news that THEY SENT YOUR MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHER ON THE MOST IMPORTANT SPACE MISSION OF ALL TIME?? And then RUNNING to call your friends because oh my god
"STACEY HAVE YOU SEEN THE NEWS??" "no? Dude why are you yelling??" "THEY SENT MR GRACE TO SPACE" "who??" "Mr grace, our science from the 8th grade!" "What??" "He was the replacement scientist on the Hail Mary" "WHAT???" "Do you still have that notebook of crazy shit he said" "...oh my god we're gonna be so famous"
I’ve been cackling about this for like five minutes now
