SHINee Excerpt: Spring Japanese Magazine - Taemin

I really only meant to do Key’s but ended up doing all lol

I will do the Junon translation for Key in the morning, not sure about the rest (not even sure any will read this lol).

Please tell us what you would want to be told by fans. It doesn’t matter when I hear it, I feel happy when I’m told “Sayounara” and “Ai shiteru” [1] What would you do on a day off? Dance Lessons! I practice my singing as well, but recently I’m being taught lessons by a dancer. What’s your strong point? When I decide on a target or a dream, I stoicly accomplish it. I hate to lose, it’s being greedy in a good way. What Japanese have you recently learned? “Arienai yo~!” (laugh) [2] When I hear something that sounds like a lie I use it.

What spot would you recommend in Korea?

Busan’s Haeundae where the sea breeze is refreshing, you can sit on the docks, play with seagulls [3], and the scenery is pretty.

[1] “Goodbye”, although you usually only say this in Japanese if you’re not going to see the person for a while. And “I love you”, although traditionally Japanese refrain from using this freely. [2] Sort of like “Impossible!”

SHINee Excerpt: Spring Japanese Magazine - Minho

Second one for today, not sure if I’ll do the others.

Please tell us what you would want to be told by fans.

Moshitta means the same as “kakkoi”  (cool / handsome”) in Japanese. When we’re standing on stage, I’m happy if I hear this being yelled out.

What do you do on a day off?

Exercise. On days off, I play soccer and futsal with friends. I like physical activity. [1]

Your strong point(s)?

I think positive thinking and no matter (what my goal is) I will strive until exhaustion.

What Japanese have you recently learned?

Sakura Flower arrangement (sakura no kadou).  I only learned this from Slam Dunk, the main character’s name is Sakuragi Hanamichi and I misread it as Sakura flower arrangement (laugh).

Recommend a place (to see) in Seoul

Garosu-gil. It’s a fashionable shopping area like Omotesando and Aoyama, it’s my favourite.

SHINee Excerpt: Spring Japanese Magazine - Key

Please tell us what you would want to be told by fans.

Tanoshikatta (I had fun) is 재미 있었어 (jaemi iss-eoss-eo) in Korean. If I was told that after a concert, it would make me happy.

What do you do on a day off?

Stuff like shopping, going for coffee, after 2- 3 hours, I’d take it easy at home.

What’s your strong point?

I’m bright (cheerful) no matter what. If someone is down and thinking “that’s enough”, I like I can cheer them up. (laugh)

What Japanese have you recently learned?

“Arisou na” (“That’s likely” or “Probably”). If I’m thinking “that’s true” in Korean, in Japanese, I’ll end up saying “Arisou”.

[Rough translation. Here’s my explanation.

By default Japanese say “sou desu ne” or “sou da” if agreeing. A: “If Onew continues to throw himself down he’ll injure himself seriously” B: "Sou desu ne”

But, arisou sounds like the way they say “I agree”/”Got it”/”ok” in Korean so he was saying arisou instead of “sou desu”.]

 Recommend a spot (to see) in Seoul

My recommendation is (a) Hanok Village. The old buildings and the food are fascinating.

SHINee Excerpt: Spring Japanese Magazine - Jonghyun

Jjong is a litttttle strange.

Please tell us what you would want to be told by fans. I’d like to be (asked) “kibuni choa” by Japanese fans, this means “How (are you?) Are you ok?”, but when I hear it in Korea, I feel completely refreshed. What do you do on a day off? I go training at the gym or shopping. (Right now), I want to go shopping for fall clothes. I want a monotone style leather jacket that’s suited to an adult. What’s your strong point? A honest / frank character. On stage, even when I’m nervous, I will still openly say what I’m thinking. What Japanese have you recently learned? Nigecha dame! (I will not run away!) It’s the line of the main character Shinji-kun from my favourite anime, New Genesis Evangelion. (laugh) Recommend a place (to see) in Seoul There’s a lot of people and many attractions at Dondaemun, with lots of carts lined up on the sides of the streets selling delicious food like Ddeokbokki, that’s my recommendation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tteokbokki

SHINee Excerpt: Spring Japanese Magazine - Onew

I like that onyu sounds like On You. Because I’m just a little weird.

BTW, most of the romanization of the Korean words are coming from the way the Japanized the words.

Please tell us what you would want to be told by fans. When the write “Himune” in fanletters to show their support. In Japanese, it means “Ganbatte” What do you do on a day off? A trip! I love the beach so I want to go somewhere I can see the pretty sea. Just relaxing is the best. What’s your strong point? (To be able to) concentrate and strive with all my energy towards one (goal). What Japanese have you recently learned? Reading (dokusho). I bought a book to study Japanese and it’s the first word that caught my eye (laugh). Recommend a place (to see) in Seoul I would recommend the pretty streets of Samcheong-dong. [1] The cobblestone side streets have such a nice atmosphere. Please go and see it!

SHINee Excerpt: Spring Japanese Magazine - Group Interview

Minho is obviously the tsukkomi of the group, while Onew is the boke. It’s interesting the way Onew sets it up so Minho can tell him that.

A relaxed (all) boy interview about the group and the new song!

SHINee’s contemporary fashion and dance has charmed a wide spectrum of fans.

Their new song “Lucifer” tells the philosophy of deep love, its dance is different from what we’ve seen so far, it really nails viewers (to their seats).

Key:  In the new song, we sing about a confining love [1], it’s a deep and serious song. It’s like we’re singing about the feelings of a man who has sort of been cast under a spell.

Taemin: At the point where (we sing), “Loverholic” part, we do a handcuff movement with both our wrists , this signifies the shackles, I think this is interesting. [1]

Jonghyun: The song itself has a fast beat and electronic sound. I think maybe this tune will show a new side to SHINee, a manly side.

(But,) while we were shooting, it was just five guys fooling around all the time.

Key:  The members were just playing pranks and goofing off.  Always excited and having fun.

Onew:  After, I thought, “I’ll make everyone laugh by telling oyaji gags, but, recently no one is really laughing at them.

Minho:  That’s because you tell the same jokes time and time again. When we first heard them, they were funny.

Onew:  The futon flew away, the frog is returning, how much is this caviar, etc, right? [2]

Taemin:  Ahaha (*laugh*). I liked Onew’s jokes. What makes me laugh and what makes other people laugh may be different it seems. (*laugh*)

Jonghyun: As long as we’re together the way we are now, we won’t stop laughing. When we’re standing on stage with our faces serious, it’s a 180 degree turn.

Taemin: True. I hope that we have lots of opportunities to do stage shows. Our current goal is for a country-wide tour in Japan!

Onew:  I think all of the members’ hearts are together on that, we want to carry out a cross-country tour.  We want to increase the (chances) [3] to come into contact with all of the  Japanese fans, so please wait.

SHINee Translation Excerpt: Hanako - Taemin

Taemin-kun speaks his mind about his interest in Miyazaki Hayao from before.

“Recently, I’ve been solely watching another two that I’m into. I love One Piece and Tennis no Oujisama (Prince of Tennis). Last night too, I watched those two then went to bed. Ah, I listened to a recording (after).”

During breaks from shooting too, he hummed a song from Tohoshinki, his seniors from his office, and did some light dancing.

As the youngest of the group, his naivety in his smile calms those around him.

The secret of his health? “Eating anything without exception”

“I try to eat a balanced diet every day. I ensure that I eat and I also take vitamins. My favourite food is meat. At times when I’m sad, if I eat meat, I cheer up. (laugh)”

In contrast to his looks of an angel with his boyishness remaining, his choice in food was surprisingly carnivorous. [1]

This could also be said about his (approach) to work.

“I’m quite covetous so if there’s a chance, I’d want to challenge different things. Aside from SHINee stage performances, I’d want to do musicals, act, MC, etc.

I would like to show the maturing, soon to be adult side to me. Hairstyles too, I’m blonde right now, I want to try different hairstyles. Please look forward to it.“

[1] This was a sort of run-on sentence so I broke it up.

[2] In Japan, you have nikushokukkei danshi; meat eating guys who are basically go-getters, and soushokukei danshi; grass eating guys who would rather you do the work are less competitive.

Since Taemin looks so innocent they were surprised by his aggressiveness.

SHINee Magazine Excerpt: Hanako - Minho

Third one today for Minho’s Birthday as well, let’s look back at him lying blatantly to the interviewer about exercising. We all know those massive manboobs didn’t come from just exercising enough to be healthy.

Appearing as a regular on Korea’s national sport variety TV show “Let’s go! Dream Team”, Minho-kun’s image of sportsman is strong within SHINee. Surely he must be zealous about training? But contrary to everyone’s expectation, we received a somewhat moderate answer. “About 3-4 times a week, I go to gym for about an hour. I do enough to stay healthy.”

Right now, what holds his interest is what he can do in order do his next job better. “I look at old shots and magazines I’ve appeared in and I’ll examine myself, ‘This came out like this because I did this’.  No matter how good a stage performance is, there will disappointing parts to it. That’s why afterwards I’ll re-watch the recordings and think 'It’s still not perfect’. Even giving my best, I can’t say with pride even once 'That was good enough’. ”

Wanting to be perfect, his competitiveness is strong, indeed he seems like someone fond of sports.

With this spirit that hates to lose, even for the album recording, he recorded a difficult rap that the other members praised, to which he humbly said, “I’ve still got far to go”.

“From here on, it would be good if we could show the process of us growing up. We are still at a level where we need to grow.”

Is Onew rubbing off on Key?

Key-kun is part of the large coffee faction, moreover, he’s a connoisseur who particular about it being “strong-ish”.

“For work I have to travel to different countries, but, coffee is global. At times when I have work and in the morning, I always have coffee. When I eat breakfast at the hotel, I must drink coffee. Because it injects power (into me). (laugh)”

As far as Key-kun is concerned, coffee that gives him power, is a “Key element”. [1]

With his sharp sensitivity fully operational, he has what he needs to work out his ideas for music and performances.

“At SMTOWN LIVE in Tokyo Dome Special Edition, f(x)’s Krystal and I did a performance together, the music, lighting and costumes I gave a lot of thought into and created with all of my energy. The next time I have a solo, if it’s a stage performance, I want to be able to show off my special colours.” It’s for this reason he’s in the midst of checking up on overseas artist’s stage performances and musicals and stocking up on information that he can use later. “When I listen to music now too, I’m always wondering what kind of style would be good. If I (listen) to it once and it makes me feel like ‘Ah, I (could do this)’, then I’ll want to try it on stage.” Music, fashion, art, culture and such, Key possesses a deep knowledge, always researching ways to express himself, he wields the fever of a sportsman. In front of the camera, striking one cool pose after the other, is Jonghyun-kun. [1] To be able to move with such sharp and supple movements is the result of putting in great effort daily. “I do weight training for 1 - 2 hours daily. I really hated training my upper body when I started doing it about two years ago, but now I don’t feel right if I don’t do it! It’s completely become a habit.” Their stage clothing (for) Jonghyun-kun too, there are alot of designs that show off his arms. (But,) the overall balance of his muscle is good, perhaps he might be a good alrounder at sports…. “I don’t really like doing much exercise besides weight training, so I think ‘wow’ when I see women/girls who are good at exercising. People who can easily handle everything come across as great.” In the same way (we think) that Jonghyun-kun is a great artist as he can easily handle singing, dancing and even songwriting. “We’re (trying) to understand different concepts of music, so our goal is to be able to handle it (all) easily. At their concert, Onew gave fans a surprise when he began a solo opera song at the top of his lungs with his beautiful tenor voice at (their) concert. But the secret of this wonderful voice may be in his love for “water”. “Drinking lots of water helps with your blood circulation, I’ve also heard it helps with your throat, so I started drinking lots of water. If I see water, I drink it. I’m not fussy over the brand so any water is fine with me. Yesterday before sleeping I drank water, today as soon as I got up I drank water. It’s true!” The Japanese word he recently learned is “isogashii [1]” which can be used to describe everyday for Onew. Within those days, his relationship with fans is just like the water that enriches Onew. [2] “I like putting fans first, it’s fun. Because at the concerts we really receive alot of energy. Each time, there’s so many watching over us. Cheering on my performance, their reactions and coming in contact everyone comes together. I want to show different sides to me after this, so it would be good if you could watch and pick the one you like from them. Everyone, please pick up the me [3] that you like! SHINee Magazine Excerpt: Hanako - Group

You’re releasing an original album in Japan for the first time, how does this feel?

J: Entirely nervous. For this (album), there are Japan only original songs on it, I hope lots of people listen to it, I’m also anxious about the opportunity to show SHINee’s new colours. Songs released in Korea were re-interpreted in Japanese and also recorded for this album. Compared to before, our sensitivity has changed, we’ve grown a little bit so we able to have new experiences and able to do new interpretations. I think we completed the songs with new colours.

How was recording? 

K:  The way of expressing things in Korean songs is different, so this took some time to grasp. J: Minho’s rap was difficult, you had a hard time right? O: (In Japanese:) How was it? Minho-kun? M: Talking in Japanese is hard, rapping (in it) was even more difficult. The result, as we were able to do it well, I was incredibly glad!

This album is packed with the growth from your Japanese debut until this album appears. What sort of growth is this?

T:  It still hasn’t been long since our Japan debut so, rather than “We’ve grown like this”, I think we were able to transmit our music while we had our commemorative RECEPTION LIVE concerts at places around Japan. I think there are so many people that don’t know us as yet so I hope that they will get to know our colours, I’d be happy if we could meet the fans at various places again.

O: We kept running along running continuously for these three months and showed a soft colour in SHINee’s softness. For the 3rd single, we gave our utmost effort into showing a powerful and manly side. I want to grow in this way of showing new sides.

K: I think my listening skills in Japanese have gotten better, it feels like I’ve improved a lot in Japanese. I’ve gotten use to the TV show system too. Since it’s only been a few months since our debut, instead of looking back, we should look forward to the many things we still have to learn after this.

M: I think the side we show on stage has changed nicely. Speaking of which

T: I’ve gotten taller!

O: You have not! (laugh)

J: I think Taemin looks more mature when he’s next to me.

T: (In Japanese:) Thank you (laugh)

Up to now, what things did you enjoy in Japan?

J: It’s the live shows. Because you get to meet fans and being on tour, you get to eat delicious tasty food. There’s a lot of tasty food in Japan.

T: What I’ve enjoyed the most about Japan is the fans. The fans are kind and have a cute feel.

Because you’ve been to many different countries, does each country have differing charms?

J: They do, don’t they? I think they’re each influenced by their culture. Each country has its culture and national character. You can feel this in the fans. I think Japanese fans have quietness, when we’re on stage you can kinda feel their respect.

O: But no matter what country we’re in, the love we receive is the same. (laugh)

When you’re on stage, what sticks with you?

K: The times when (they) sing in Korean for us. They remember the entire recorded Korean album and sing it together with us.

J: That’s true. It’s really meaningful when fans sing the same words (although) it’s a different country. Because that’s Korean culture that has been learned through our music.

M: I’m also happy when I see placards written in Korean. It feels like persons that didn’t know Korean are sincerely learning it.

In what way, do you want SHINee to grow from here on?

K: I hope we don’t have any limits, I want to be able to show more sides to us, the way we have up to now.

M: I guess it’s more important to be able to show what we have before, than to completely change.

SHINee Magazine Translation : More - Group Interview

Shining across borders, (their) charm is mesmerizing the world. SHINee. Their Christmas presents have already arrived for this year. Contemporary band SHINee debuted in Japan this summer. Their brilliant achievement was being the first Asian artists to perform at Abbey Studio in England, which is closely tied to the Beatles. Furthermore, their performed alongside their seniors BoA and Tohoshinki in Paris. Looking back at their worldwide breakthrough in 2011 Taemin sums it up “We’ve finally stood at the start line”. Minho “This is self-confident work!” sends out about their first album, “The First”. Up to now, aside from the 3 singles released in Japan have been various love songs as well, “Always, love”, “Better”, etc. Jonghyun: “(When you can) feel the season from experience or stir your heart, in a movie when you indirectly experience love / passion, that’s what expressing emotion is for I guess”. Minho: “But, I like action movies more than love stories…” Onew: “He’s really a true lover of action movies (laughs)。 Comedy is what I often watch, (always) laughing steadily, recently, because I’ve come to be greatly moved, my heart is warming. I think this feeling of warmth is expressed in the voice. Soon the holiday season will arrive, what are the memories of these five? Taemin: "Five years ago, I received a Maltese puppy as a Christmas present! It came to our home on (December) 24th so, its name is Eve. By the way, the other was named Adam when it became a two-pet family. Both are cute <3” Key: “At our home, every year we decorate the tree together. This year I have an event (work) so I guess it’s postponed to next year.” Onew: “Recently we’ve really been doing a lot of rehearsals but, this is the season when you can look forward to appearing on many pretty stages.” Minho: “No matter who it is, (for everyone) Christmas is a festival. So that (everyone) will remember this time with us as sparkling, we’re going to rouse everyone up with us.” Jonghyun: “I wonder if we’ll get any present from Santa on Christmas Eve?”

Key: “Surely we will (laughs)” Taemin: Next year, I’m turning 20! When asked what fashion item he’s looking into his winter, Taemin immediately replied “knit”. Wearing his own clothes at the time of the interview, he wore a white knit with a discreet skull pattern. The last of the members in his teens, but, although he turns 20 next year, it seems he’s not challenging getting a driver’s licence. Born 18th July, 1993 Jonghyun: I want to participate in an MT [1] with friends. Onew and Minho have their dirver’s licence and often get hyped up talking about their favourite cars. Jonghyun shows a strong interest in a (Membership Training trip. A camp where you can deepen bonds with friends) “Hearing stories from my friends in my hometown, I feel like I want to try this next year!” Born 8th April, 1990 [1] Example http://korea-again.blogspot.com/2011/04/gsu-membership-training.html Onew: (My) thick eyebrows are my favourite. When asked what their favourite body parts were, among the answers are “Lips” (Jonghyun), “Fair skin” (Key), Onew’s unexpected answer is “Thick eyebrows”. Also, he has a small longing. “If I could do it once, I want to have a scene in a movie, running in the rain with all my might. “ Born 14th December, 1989 Minho: The one who hates to lose complete defeated by the maknae (youngest)!? Minho’s nickname is Flaming charisma [1] “In middle school when I was in the sports club, I hated to lose and would blow up. Contests wouldn’t end until I was at the top!” yet, among the members, when the talk turned to their current craze of racing games, Minho confessed, “The game god is Taemin (laughs)”. Born 9th December, 1991 [2] Literally they said charisma of blaze/flame but I went with what I know is usually translated since I don’t know Korean and this is after all a Japanese magazine. Key: (Clothing) re-making and Japanese are his specialities! Called the Almighty Key [3] is the talented Key [3]. Declaring his  obsession with his personal clothes, he said “In Paris, I bought a shirt and I re-made it with a leopard print collar!”. His strong point is Japanese as well, during the time of the shoot he could be seen talking to the cameraman, “Next, what sort of facial expression would be good?” (In Japanese). Born: 23rd October, 1991 [3] They used kagi as in key first and then Ki as in Kibum. I’m falling asleep and I promised I would post this today so hopefully there are no huge errors!

SHINee Mobile Update: 20120608 (SHINee Room Q & A)

What’s something that you keep in mind during concerts? Onew: Mutual understanding between fans and myself (communication). Onew’s singing voice is truly (mesmerizing), it’s gentle singing voice. What’s your secret to preserving such a voice? Onew: Sound sleep! And, I don’t often drink cold stuff before going to bed! Also, be sure not to talk a lot What’s something that gave you a good laugh recently? Onew: On May 25th 2012, the day of SHINee’s 4 year anniversary, when at the airport, before (I) got on the airplane, fan came running over and left saying “Oh! SHINee! Oh sorry…” [1]

What’s the most fun point of a concert? Jonghyun: While all the fans are hyped up and I’m singing a song. [1] Literally, chigau means “to differ” x is different from y, but it’s also used to show that you were wrong/made a mistake, so it’s not that they were necessarily being rude “wow you don’t look like I thought you would!” but it could be they thought he was a member of SHINee but at looking at him closer in plain clothes thought they were wrong. Though most Japanese fans think it’s option A.

It’s important for a person to beleive that “I can do it” Doing this work, there are a lot things that are important, but, the one thing I keep in mind is believing that I can do this. At times when standing in public, you can cross over walls if you possess self-confidence. After that, it’s health management. What do I think is attractive for a man? Hmm, I guess someone that’s attentive(/considerate) and then someone that’s good at caring (for other). I want to be able to say I’m this type of person!

The sight of the (fans) singing with us was moving! This year, we accomplished our wish of debuting in Japan, were able to have our first album release as well, it was a full year. Among this was what moved me was SMTOWNLIVE (Joint live show for those attached to the company) at Tokyo Dome. The guests singing our songs together with us brought a lump to my throat. [1] A man that thinks he’s wonderful, that’s not me (laugh). I’m a frank honest person guy. [1] literally chest became hot.

As a group, I want us to continue to change. “How can we shape the (image)[2] that we’re aiming for?”, we’re always thinking about this. What are the trends right now, What sort of aspect can we show that’s fresh? This includes fashion and hairstyles, etc. So that SHINee’s image isn’t fixed, we include everyone’s ideas. We were finally able to cut a start in Japan. We’ll work our hardest so that everyone can knows more about us. [2] literally it says world-view

On deciding a goal, it’s straight to it! I think the words I dread hearing [3] each time is “Ah, Thank god” [4]. Because it’s truly heavy hearing the words of people who are worrying about you. If I could be told so much as “When (you) decide on a goal, (you) head to it like a race horse”, I’m think someone who thinks that someone who decides on something and heads straight to it is cool, so I’d be really happy if someone told me that. I long to be a man who carries out his words. [3] Lit. “ears hurt.” [4] Not as in “You should be thankful” but more in a “thank goodness I thought you had died in that plane crash” sort of way.

Cute. (But) not just that! The five’s radiance that are making this era. To quote Jonghyun, “A man’s sexiness, that’s the nuance I wanted to give”. Standing in front of the camera while letting loose with the sex appeal of their natural stances, their cool mature expressions are bewitching. Known for their trendsetting, ability to dress well is also gains them a perfect score. But, the second they hear “The shoot is OK”, they start singing and dancing and playing around to the background music, watching each other’s photos on the monitor and shouting… this cute gap is also their charm. Key “I’m often told I’m too cheerful” [1] I’m (the type of person who) even if something bad happens I’ll soon switch moods so even if I’m feeling down I don’t slip into a bad mood. I often say “If I sleep for one night I’ll get back on my feet”, but, I totally forget even before I fall asleep. The members often half fed-up say, “You’re too cheerful”. (laugh) I think this about me is charming, I’m a guy who doesn’t make excuses. I think someone who’s a good sport [1]is cool. [1] 潔い can be interpreted as manly, but, in this case it means gracious.
