This 2022 wood sculpture by Chinese artist Tian Guoran depicts Master Hongyi, the Buddhist name of Li Shutong (1880–1942).

A monk, calligrapher, painter, musician, poet, and art educator, Hongyi was one of modern China’s most remarkable cultural figures.

Here, he appears to emerge from the raw tree itself — half carved figure, half untouched wood.
