Chalchiuhtlicue, She of the Jade Skirt, is Our Lady of Terrenal Waters. She dwells both beneath and above the ground, for She is regent of rivers, lakes and lagoons as well as underground water currents. For our ancestors, jade is a stone which represents fertility, springtime, value and abundance. The jade skirt of Chalchiuhtlicue, thus, is a metaphor which alludes to the precious liquid, whose movement resembles that of a traditional enagua or skirt. Another one of the names given to this deity is Matlalcueyitl or Matlalcueye, She of the Net Skirt, a reference to fishing, an essential activity of Mesoamerican economy, which could not take place without the blessings and support of the Lady of Water.

In an era previous to ours, Chalchiuhtlicue was the Sun of Water, The destruction of this era came when the Heavens became overflown and the Earth was flooded.
