Rising from the Ashes
If you’ve been to The Soundboard on Wednesday night at the Community Education Center, home of PQRadio1.comlive, then you might see me. I am one of a kind with my welcoming spirit and love for music. I even sang one week! With the vision of The Black Lily, Philadelphia powerhouse Purple Queen and NoQ Tommy have brought the inspiration of The 5 Spot back to new and seasoned artists. In the past month, I have met some incredible artists, comedians, and poets. I have developed some solid connections with DJ’s, like DJ Pound215.
I was recently brought back into the music scene by a talented artist, The Young King. We met at an event he hosted to benefit cancer research at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in December 2016. He and I began to collaborate and work together. At The Soundboard opening night, The Young King took the open mic and reconnected to his first radio interview host, NoQ Tommy from The No Filter Show on Thursday nights from 7-10 pm.
I chose the imagery of the phoenix because as I learn about the history of The 5 Spot, I realize the beauty and value of it has not been lost from the memories of those who were in attendance. Haze Attacks, sound producer for King Magnetic’s new release EH4AR from Allentown, spoke with such reverence for The 5 Spot. He remembers meeting Dice Raw and many other artists when he came to see shows. When reading about the memories of those who used to come to The 5 Spot on geoclan.com, I found this special memory from Dice Raw. "I met a lot of good people there. It was a magicalplace and I'll miss it."
With a professional background in education and consulting, finding people like Purple and Tommy who seek to inspire artists, is so inspiring. I am eager to see what featured artist Mick Jenkins will bring for us this Wednesday. He has a show at the TLA this Friday, April 28, 2017. To be around artists, leaders, and lovers of music each week is like medicine to my soul. Although new to the hip hop scene, I’ve been in love with music my whole life. I truly hope the vision for The 5 Spot to rise again at The Soundboard would be a beautiful way to remember the spot that burned down ten years ago.
Learn more about what’s happening each week at The Soundboard at pqradio1.comlive.
