Autumnal Magic from the Autumnal Witch

Acorns symbolize prosperity. Pick the first one up you find this year and carry it as a charm or place it on your altar for a prosperous season. Don’t forget: there are more ways that money that you can become prosperous in: friendship, love, care, home, etc.

Leaves changing colors are just magical in and of themselves. Find a leaf - one that just really speaks to you and press it in your grimoire, book or a journal. Write about that leaf - research the tree it came from to expand your knowledge of your local surroundings.

Pumpkins are another aspect of prosperity, but also wishes and love. When carved, they are used for warding. So carve a pumpkin to ward negative spirits away from your home. Save the seeds (you can even roast them in the oven!) and place them in a small jar, followed by a small piece of a paper with your wish written on it. Place the jar beneath your pillow. Or: Take the seeds where you can plant them (old burning places are wonderful for this) and as you bury the seeds, say your wish aloud so that it may come true next Autumn, and your pumpkins that grow will be more fruitful in their magical properties.

Apples represent love, fertility, beauty and wisdom. Take an apple and cut it up so that you can access the seeds inside. Keep them safe so that you may use them in future spells or use them on your altar for decoration. Apple cider can also be used in autumnal spell work.

Corn can be used in all sorts of magic, but by saving the dried husks, you can make a poppet and bless it with protection. Place your poppet somewhere visible - on your altar or near a door - to protect your home. You can also use corn husks in knot magick.

Mums (also knows as Chrysanthiums) are used for protection. Go to a (preferably locally-owned) shop and pick out a pot of mums or two. Place them at your front and/or back doors to protect you home. If you are unable to house the plants, you could also buy a pot, weave them into a wreath to hang on your door or near a window, and donate the rest of the plant to someone.

take a walk, once in the rain, once in the Sun to celebrate Autumn’s duality

collect the falling leaves and make a bouquet to hang on your wall

spare a thought for your ancestors, those whose legacy now belongs to you

research your family tree

visit your ancestors’ graves and adorn them with white chrysanthemum for protection

drink hot cocoa/coffee mixed with cinnamon, pumpkin spice or nutmeg

bake a pumpkin pie or try your hand at any pumpkin-related recipes (they’re all great tbh)

dress in autumnal colours: yellow, orange, red, brown

check your wards and protections around the house

give offerings to the spirits who have breached the veil

have yourself a grand feast (leave a meal for the spirits though!)

marathon a horror movie anthology. or multiple.

gather your friends and have a bonfire night (bonus points if fireworks are included)

go to a halloween-themed party and dance the night away

dress up as a witch and let people believe that it’s just a costume

drink spiced apple cider or red wine. get drunk enough to casually chat with the spirits. celebrate outrageously.

🥀 Write letters to your ancestors. Seal them in envelopes with dried flowers or other small offerings, and burn them.

🥀 In lieu of flowers, delicately cut apple slices, orange peels, or other fruits in floral shapes and leave a bowl of them as an offering.

🥀 Read some books/watch some movies that are popular in your family.

🥀 Write little poems or letters to the Fae, roll them up and put them inside cinnamon sticks with a blob of honey or some milk, then leave them in the woods.

🥀 (Gently!) Put googly eyes and tiny paper hats on your plants to make modern Jack o’ lanterns.

🥀 Wear things from people in your life, family jewelry, clothes that a family member has purchased for you,

🥀 If you can visit the grave of a loved one or someone in your family. Talk to them for a bit.

🥀 Charge candles with crystals Lapis Lazuli, Rhodonite, Citrine, or hematite to burn at your altar.

🥀 Write a list to your deities of the things you are proud of having accomplished together. Bury it with an offering.
