hi guys i’m gonna be putting levi on my multi bc i feel like he’s being left behind here !! i may move him back to his own blog once i’ve worked out original lore but in the mean time find him at zukunftsvision
( MARTY )
hope is a tiny sapling in the soil of an idealistic heart — it is nurtured by faith, but it struggles to grow in the damning darkness that is reality. and faith, in this time, is not so easy to sustain. marty considers himself an optimistic realist, but these past months have erased much of his optimism. his and aspen’s discovery leave no doubt, and their parents reluctantly yielded every last piece of evidence needed to convince him — it’s all there, and surprisingly, he doesn’t find it hard to believe. it’s almost as though he knows he has done it all before, over and over again for centuries. he can almost remember, a word at the tip of his tongue, a memory at the tip of his conscious. that’s how he knows it’s true: he will soon die, and there is nothing he can do about it. he has every other time, why should this life be different? he does not know how soon, he does not know how at all, he just knows.
and he wishes, he wishes so ardently that he didn’t. even if it must be, that he could live out however long he has in the bliss of ignorance. instead, marty has grown increasingly weary — knowing that the weight of centuries weighs upon his shoulders and that he yet may never see past the age of twenty-five is an ever so dismal thing, and knowing that the future he has only just started imagining is out of his reach shatters his spirits into pieces every time he thinks of it. thus, lately, he has stopped making too great of an effort to recompose himself again, for the shards are sharp as razors and there is just no end. marty only tries not to lose sight of the happiness he’s found only so recently, and to take every day as it comes. as long as he can be by levi’s side, it is a day well spent. it will never be enough, but neither will twenty, fifty, eighty years. ( if they only had such time. )
for levi’s sake, and for that of his own heart, it’s better to pretend, to forget the imminence, the definitiveness. it’s easier. it’s what he desires so deeply. so he smiles a warm smile, encouraging and sweet, and finds levi’s hand, to intertwine his own fingers with his, wrap his other hand around it and then just hold it, hold him, forever, or for as-long-as-they-have. “ maybe this time will be different? ” he tries not to sound like he doesn’t believe, even if it means lying — if he cannot keep his own heart from breaking, protecting levi’s is the least he can do. he feels so cruel for pulling him into his life, his tragically, desperately short life, even before he knew of its tragic, desperate shortness. “ we can pretend, if you want. maybe believing makes the difference. ”
“ maybe. ” levi doesn’t sound hopeful, his voice heightened in pitch, faltering right along with his usual optimism. it’s like he’s walking through a dream, not the warm, pleasant kind, but the strange, disorienting kind that leaves you wondering why your mind would produce something like that when you wake up. the magic is lost on levi. it’s not the idea of death and rebirth that he can’t hold in his head, but rather how it’s filled with beauty and dread simultaneously.
levi’s thumb traces back and forth across marty’s index finger, a movement as natural as branches bowing to the wind. only this morning, twenty five seemed worlds away, out of reach, he’ll be a completely different person by then; never one to plan the future, only lay out the details of theoretical nice moments in his mind’s eye, the broad brushstrokes outlining the important things tossed aside somewhere in the back. now it seems right on the doorstep.
for a just a second, he acknowledges the part of him protesting the idea that in all of marty’s existence, he will only be a passing blip, but it’s eclipsed by the rest: marty will reach the end of his life when everyone else their age is reaching the end of their college degree. marty has known unimaginable places and people and can’t remember any of them. marty’s family buries someone they love over and over again.
but when the haunting chill subsides and his roots sink into the ground again, he reminds himself: there are a hundred different ways someone their age could be dying. and dying isn’t the right word for marty, anyways, he’s warm and breathing and levi feels a hint of his pulse when he lifts his chin with one fingertip.
levi tastes the words before he says them, makes sure they don’t sting his tongue with desolation or hopelessness. marty wears rose-tinted glasses even more potent than levi’s own, and now, as they begin to crack, levi will do all he can to piece them back together. “ no one knows how long they have, marty, ” he says, and hopes it’s more reassuring than condescending. “ one step at a time, you know? that’s all we have. ” a hint of apprehension in the hope that belies his half-smile, treading carefully, almost nose-to-nose now, “ but you don’t have to take them alone. ”

where will you go when you die ?
YOU GO INTO DEATH’S ARMS / you do not wake up anywhere. you meet death with eyes open, and death smiles at you, wordless, knowing. you take its hand, and are drawn under the sweep of a vast dark cloak. death takes you home with it. you are cradled in the embrace of a vast and incomprehensible lover. you are safe. you are loved. you are known, and you are tended to like a flower in a garden, like a beloved child, like an exquisite rarity. you doze in the curl of death's cloak and you help to soothe its melancholy, and for that you are rewarded endlessly.

( NOTEBOOK BOY. )
a shifting shadow in his peripheral vision brushes marty’s attention lightly, something he is usually so eager to dismiss as the regular bustle of the coffee shop, something he is far removed from right now. in this moment, though, the image fits the one invoked by the last lines he’s read from the book between his fingers, and reality and fantasy get entangled, trip over each other, fall and rip down the screen with them. sudden, real-world light and sounds flood his senses as marty snaps out of the story and back into the coffee shop. he blinks at the boy standing before his table expectantly; has he said something that marty missed? he recognizes him. the barista? no, no, another guest, nobody he has spoken to before. another regular, perhaps? marty scrambles to make up for the delayed response, his book closed on a finger, eagerly leaning forward over the table, an attentive smile.
“ i am so sorry, i did not see you there. can i help you? ”
his usual table by the window is full, autumn rain pushing people off the busy street and into the cheerful warmth of the buildings that line it. a notebook clasped in his hands, levi waits with easy patience for the owner to notice him.
he could have left it at the counter with the barista after flipping to the front and the back for contact details ( and perhaps lingering on some of the prettier pages for a moment longer than he should ), but that would leave too much to chance. the passing moments when the equations leave his head hurting and he looks up into the vanilla-scented air for a break and hopes there might be a reason to approach are often enough that he’ll take this one as fate.
the chance is already taken, no point regretting it now. bag still on one shoulder, shoulders still damp from the rain outside, levi slides into an adjacent chair, across the table and over to the left, but sits in it sideways in a way that says he’s not sure if he’s staying. “ you left this behind last week, ” levi sets the notebook down between them, and even if his mouth doesn’t form the curve of a smile, the rest of his face suggests one. “ thought you might want it back. ”

it’s been about a week since he set a book on her desk as he walked by on the way to his own — given how much she likes books, that should be enough for a slender volume of short poems, shouldn’t it ?? he departs from the gaggle of boys huddled around a tree. a few glances follow after him, but levi is known to wander, so no one thinks too much of it.
nef doesn’t seem otherwise occupied, though she does have very dark circles, and levi slides into the empty space on the bench beside her, back to the table, bright-eyed. “ so, ” knees bounce expectantly, though he’s got no idea what he’s expecting, because he hasn’t read the book, the choice was based entirely on the dust jacket. “ how’d you like it? ”
I don’t know why I do that sometimes. You know, like, lie about things for no reason.
( MARTY )
the summer afternoon sun dunks diagon alley into a crisp warm light, saturating the colours of even the most faded shop signs. it does little to make the place less scarred-looking, the gaping holes where popular shops used to be, barricaded windows from bancrupcy or tragedy or an era of fear. the war is over, though, the world is piecing itself together bit by bit, and next to the empty shops there are others, old and new alike, bustling with life and newly revived business. it’s comforting to walk down the familiar, unevenly cobbled street and to see the shops of his childhood, some of which marty never thought he would again.
passing flourish and blott’s wakes a feeling of nostalgia deep inside of him, the urgent kind that begs to relive these memories this very instant, to spend hours rummaging through all corners of the store and getting lost between the covers of future favourite books. that is not the reason why marty has come here, although the thought of this reason does elicit the same kind of pull in his gut. he’ll finally see him gain. his first greeting is shaky, as if he was nervous. how can he be, when he’s just so happy?
now they decided to find a more peaceful place to sit, at lovelace’s lunchroom, a lovely little café further down diagon alley where the shops get more sparse and the crowds get thinner. the green-and-white chequer of the tiles and the sunlight from the large window by their sitting booth, accompanied by the low humming from the radio, give the place a light, cheerful atmosphere. like this is any summer, like marty and levi could order one big ice cream sundae after the other and laugh and talk about silly things like school and what they’d made of their holidays. it’s not any summer, though, things have changed since their last one, and so on the table between them lie only marty’s forearms, both hands loosely clasped between them. on his face he wears a silent smile and a look of curiosity. he watches levi intently; he knows this man is only a year away from the levi he knew, yet he looks changed in a way that marty doesn’t yet understand. though he wants to.
“ i’m glad to see you again, ” he lets the other know in a small voice; confessions still fall easily when he’s around levi, but his mind wants to chastise him for it. you don’t know if he wants to know. “ i was–… ah… worried. perhaps. i wasn’t sure if i should be. i was so happy to hear from you. ”
slowly, diagon alley has returning to its former self, shattered walls rebuilt brick by brick, scorched shopfronts in the midst of being repainted, the ghosts of fire and fear and fragments of windowpanes ground into cobblestones by hundreds of enlivened footsteps. is it more idyllic, now, the first beams of sunset splashing streaks of watercolor over spires and balconies, that they’ve tasted the black ink of grief ??
“ sorry, i didn’t, um… ” suddenly his mouth is dry, because there are so many words lying in wait on the tip of his tongue and none of them feel right enough to let go of. eyes settle on marty’s hands, elegant fingers woven together atop the vinyl table, and levi recalls all the times they’ve cascaded through his hair, homework-filled wednesday evenings and saturday mornings out on the grounds. he tucks his own hands underneath his thighs to stop them from reaching out.
“ i really missed you, ” at the familiarity of this need, he feels a little more himself again, illuminated by rosy cheeks and questioning eyes, unchanged and unmarred. levi knows he can’t stay here, but how can he leave marty behind ??
et illuminat sequere, he’s been told his whole life.
those questions are for later. like nothing’s changed, one scuffed converse reaches out to nudge marty’s ankle underneath the table, smiling whispering of relief as it tugs at his mouth. “ no need to be worried. i’m glad you’re okay. ”
