A lot has been made of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson branching out of his typical action blockbusters to take on a more serious role in Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine.

To be honest, this role is not much of a stretch for him, and his muscles and the prosthetics are doing a lot of the heavy lifting here.

Now, Emily Blunt is a different story, completely disappearing into the role.

So we’re left with a sports movie that doesn’t want to do the tropes of a sports movie, a biopic that doesn’t want to do the tropes of a biopic, and an award season movie that doesn’t want to do the tropes of an award season movie.

I respect all of those motivations, but the end result lacks some of the spark needed to make this a truly memorable film.
