THE LIFE OF A SICADA.

LAST FEW DAYS.
When we woke up after the night of drinking and swimming in the ocean, our bodies still plastered with sand, we decided we wanted to get away from the resort area a bit and see the town of Varadero. We walked over to the next hotel on the beach and rented a scooter for the evening at a cost of 15 Pesos. I actually have never driven any kind of motorized bike before that day and I was a little bit worried I might crash. I looked over at Mara as we were signing the paper work for the bike and said “just so you know, I’ve never driven one of these before.” and smirked.
“Oh great!” she laughed a bit nervous, “Thanks for telling me now!”
“I got this!” I reassured and added, “We’ll just take it slow.”
The rental guy gave me a quick run through of the bike and when I say quick, I mean quick! As in, “here’s the keys, here’s the start button, here is your helmet, here is the brakes. Enjoy amigo.”
“Simple!” I smiled at Mara. And it was. We took the evening ripping at 50 to 60 km/h through the entire town of Varadero. Cruised up and down every little side street and looked at all the buildings and restaurants, clubs and bars, as well as got a bit more of a feel for the way of life in Cuba. It was awesome. We stopped at a beach way down the strip from the rest of the touristy spots and parked for a quick break. Just as we got to the edge of the waterfront, a group of HUGE pelicans were fishing and diving in to the water right in front of us. It was breath taking.
We ended the evening at a cabana style restaurant for some native Cuban food and of course, Café con leche. For 4 Pesos (roughly 5$) I had a big plate of rice and beans, fried platinos, salad, a fried quarter chicken, sweet potatoes, corn and to top it off, coffee and water. Actually, I think that that meal was the best money I spent in Cuba.
When we planned the trip, we picked something all-inclusive so we wouldn’t have to worry about being with out drinks or food, so when we left Toronto, we only took close to 100$ with us each. Best Idea for this vacation for sure!!! I’m absolutely positive I would have over spent and paid for a lot of things on this trip if I had taken more money or had access to it. The fact that we had to budget every single peso, made it that much more personal for us to see the country of Cuba. But, if you’ve followed my blog or travels for a bit of time now, you can easily see the developing pattern I have of being some where far away with no money. I actually much pefer to travel with less, it forces me to see and experience things that money would easily take away with convenience and comfort. Not that the 3 star hotel we stayed at made it hard to survive, but rather more appreciative of what we did have and what was offered. Many of the surrounding hotels were lavish and rich on the inside with miles and miles of buffets and Jacuzzis and bars and dance clubs, etc. etc. but none of them offered the personal and more intimate feeling we were able to experience in the less popular hotel with like minded people with in our tax bracket. It was absolutely perfect. I love the hidden things in places, and the people I have had the pleasure of travelling with within my life, usually feel the same way. Making the overall experience of a trip phenomenal.
Ok enough about that. We ended the night back at our hotel watching an amazing cabaret show on the patio, with god knows how many rum and cokes, beers and tequila. Conversing with other travellers about the differences between government, politics, countries and culture. These conversations were of no shortage on the patio at our hotel! Interesting debates and long drawn out ideas of History and revolutions. Again for those of you that know me, know I go all in when it comes to such talks. I needed that. I needed to let out a bunch of dark anger pent up from being in Iraq. I needed to talk with foreign people and help them understand about America and our way of life. And I needed new friends as well as Ideas while I was here. After almost every day on the beach or exploring, I started to look forward to the new arrivals at the hotel, curious about whose brain I could pick.
And again, when the ideas became radical or sometimes others stopped themselves to catch their fear of patriotism. I would smile and say. “Its Cuba tho.”
Relaxing. Sounds easy, definitely looks easy, and to some it might very well be easy, but for me, I have not yet learned the entire trait of sitting still and being calm. Everyone who I told that I was going to Cuba looked at me enviously and said, “awe! You’re going to have an amazing time, just doing nothing, being on the beach…” and so on. I thought to myself, with out the kids running around, and being able to lie on the beach with someone I am close to, in the past it has been a girlfriend or wife that was always included to my beach visits, but on my own I don’t really know what to do. My best attempt was because I was completely hung over from the night before of dancing and drinking, that I made the lawn chair on the beach my home. Drank coffee and water all day and took in the sound of the waves, the sand on my feet, the smell of the air and the breezy warm gusts of wind. Every so often I would jump in the water for a dunk and brush the salt water through my hair, lay down and dry off in the sun. As far as being able to relax fully? I couldn’t.
My mind was bogged down with the pressures of life back home. Yet another failed relationship, that ended once and for all, literally hours before I got on the plane to Cuba, the notion of still holding feelings for passed relationships, as well as the pressure of what the fuck it is I actually want to do with my life. I wished someone would just pay me to write about being on the beach! (Long shot, for sure but I haven’t given up all hope on that dream. )
So I broke out my laptop and started working on my book, writing some new songs and a few poetry pieces. The heart to heart disscussions with Mara helped. She has always inspired me to dig deep within myself and look for the truth about how I feel about someone or something and even though over the time we’ve been friends we’ve had our slight differences, there is no way I can fool her or pretend even to myself. The inspiration came from her telling me to look out at the ocean and with out hesitation mention the first person that comes to mind. That little experiement fucked me up, because I wasn’t the person I would’ve guessed. I sat there puzzled and pondered if it was because I was far away from home or if things were different now. Turns out. The ocean doesn’t lie.
SECOND OPINION
Beach, beach and more beach. The entire first day consisted of Mara and I sipping beers, café con leche, and eating Cuban ham and cheese sandwiches until our tummies were full and our heads were swimming. The beach was the most beautiful blue and it stretched for miles and miles. We met a few people the first day with in our hotel and we danced and drank, swam and laughed with the new friends. Most of the people from our hotel were from Canada, a big portion of them obviously from Toronto. It started to dawn on me though. People from Canada are not too much different then people from the US. In that I mean, tourists are annoying, selfish, rude and sometimes just as uncultured, no matter what country they flew out of. The United States, although it is a very different place and culturally I think some of us deserve to be treated like shit when we travel abroad, is not really a good place full of bad people, but rather a bad place maybe full of good people. I was a bit scared to mention to anyone in Cuba that I lived in Chicago or even mention that I had any affiliation with the country of America. After a few conversations with other douchebag Canadian’s however, I did not want the people of Cuba to see me or greet me in the same way they received these assholes. I made a conscious choice to be honest about my home from that point on and from that point on it went like this:
“Hey my friend… Where do you come from?” (Pretty much the standard greeting in any part of the world.)
“Chicago.” I would say proudly.
“Ahhhhhhhh Chicago!!!!!!?????” instant smiles. “I love Chicago. I love so many people in America. You…” pause “…My friend,” as they would look around to see if any one else noticed our conversation, “Come, come, come…”
(…trust me I tried it the other way too, and would say… “I’m from Canada!” and their response was more to the dismissive tune of, “oh… ok, nice to meet you, have a good day!”)
If I decided to go, I was given food, love, drinks, smiles, hugs and so much more!! I’m not naive to the fact of what I was doing or understanding why Cuba was so interested in someone from the US versus someone from Canada, but I had to say my little social experiment heighted the amount of fun I had on this vacation ten fold.
Ok, let me retract a bit. I LOOOOOOOVE CANADA, and I LOVE my home town of Hamilton Ontario and I rep it to the FULLEST! It is the place that I was born and bred, Toronto… ehn no so much, but I am a proud Canadian and I would never let anyone disrespect my country or city without a talking to or if worst comes to worst a fight. But………. I love Chicago too…. And I have lived there just as long….
Dilemma.
I thought, as in most traveling situations, it would be easier to go under the radar and flash my Canadian passport, hang with Canadians and give no mention of my existence in the United States. Not that I’m afraid to say I live there but nine times outta ten, it just goes smoother. While im on vacation I don’t really want to jump into tons of political debates about the states and how crazy Chicago is, etc. etc. etc. Not to mention the fact that being abroad as an “American” these days is sketchy. People don’t like Americans and as a person who was travelled quite a bit, and seen a lot, I can’t really blame the more worldly views of THE WORLD. ;)
Anyways, my point is this. The irony of it all is that I could not book this trip, fly to this country, have the amazing time and experience, see the greatest beaches, music, food, culture and have the fun that I did, from Chicago. The political bullshit of the past and grudges that the US holds against this beautiful island are insane! The fact that I could come in with no visa, no government preparation and have this amazing time and vacation is beyond me. I feel completely privileged, overwhelmingly grateful and ecstatic with it all. Few Americans get to come to this place and explain the way of life in Chicago to the Cuban workers, dancers, bartenders, bus/taxi drivers, bell hops, waitresses, lifeguards, dj’s, musicians and regular people. I was able to serve as an ambassador for my city and represent it with respect and pride and Cuba Loved me for that. By the time the sun set on our second day in Veradaro, I felt so free, comfortable, safe, and loved, that I found myself, swimming butt ass naked in the Caribbean sea under the moon light with friends. Which is completely insane for me, because I have always had a fear of the ocean at night, and to be naked and vulnerable overcoming that fear made the threshold ten points higher. But i stayed in the water for almost an hour floating naked looking at the stars saying once again. “Cuba tho…”
CUBA THO
A few months back I asked Mara what the stipulations were on going to Cuba as a Canadian citizen. After living in Chicago for so long, it never dawned on me that I could actually travel to Cuba as a Canadian citizen. I mean I’m pretty much ready to apply for American Citizenship, after fighting in Iraq and raising four girls in the states, it only seems like the natural thing to do, but after seeing Maras pictures from her last family vacation out in Cuba, I realized I had to go. She talked to me about it and we decided on a date for Nov 11. Convenient, as it is Veterans Day and also the day that I lost two very close friends and soldiers of mine in the war, it was more than a good idea to skip Nov 11 in the states this year. She was going to be fresh back from Europe and I was going to be hanging out in Canada for the week before so it seemed perfect. The date finally came and after a blow out Halloween, a few extra birthday celebrations and a week full of friends and family back in Canada, we set out for to the airport in Toronto. Since the idea came into our heads about going to Cuba, I never once saw a picture of the island, read anything further about it, or checked out any of the hotels that Mara was scoping. I left it all up to chance and surprise. She continued to ask me if I wanted to see where we were going or hear about any of the stuff that we were going to do, I shook my head and stayed strong to hold out for complete newness.
It was a weird start, my jeep literally ran out of gas a block before the gas station on Upper Gage and Rymal road, (kind of a suburban area on the east mountain where Mara lives…… I was going to pick her up) and I was a bit delayed on the step off from Hamilton. (Thanks Mom for the new AAA membership! Saved once again!!) We got out of Hamilton safe and parked the car at the airport for the week, jumped in a shuttle and made our way to “Sun Wing” airlines. (Yeah I never heard of them before either.) It was a bit uncustomary to weigh my carry on bags and it was definitely a foreign feeling obtaining our boarding passes as well as going through more than 2 security checkpoints. It wasn’t uncomfortable; it was just in slow motion. Our actual flight was loaded with very strange, very uneasy, very rebellious, very old people. It was HILARRRRIOUS!!!! We laughed the entire flight to Veradero Cuba, at the fact that no body was listening to the stewardess’ commands or instructions. It was actually the most insane flight I’ve ever been on. People stood up and ignored the flight attendants instructions to stay seated and buckle up; one man was standing the whole time in front of our row, just starring. Not talking to anyone or listening to anyone; he just stood there. Take off to landing. It was crazy, our flight attendants seemed so stressed out and annoyed that I’m literally surprised that they didn’t quit on the spot when we landed.
Once we got here we went through a pretty extensive customs screening and then two more security checks with TSA type metal detectors and belts for x-rays and then finally, baggage claim and out. Outside we were immediately bombarded with sales and beer carts and souvenir vendors then the regular barrage of taxicabs and traffic, much like all airports. A Short shuttle ride to the hotel and we were dropping our bags, heading to the bar, slamming back rum and cokes and laughing about how crazy it was that we were in Cuba. Outside the bar’s veranda, was a full moon, crashing warm waves, white sand, and a live salsa band. We immediately joined the party and ended up laying on the edge of the tide staring up at the stars divulging in the world and life and everything Mara and me always seem to blab about to each other. Drink in one hand and yet another drink in the other hand, looking up at the sky saying to ourselves… “Cuba Tho.”

An amazing person, friend and maniac of a skateboarder, has left us. Mark Pezzi, Hamilton Ontario native, OG beas crew ripper, and homie flew off to ride the concrete bowls in heaven not too long ago. The news came to me as a shock and didnt really hit me until i learned that the powdery substance that rests on top of the concrete quarter pipe at beasly skate park, is indeed the ashes of the legendary Mark Pezzi. As if beas wasnt magical enough? Since 1995 Beasly skate park, located in one of the seediest parts of hamilton, i have watched and learned the true meaning of skateboarding come to life. Before i built the courrage to venture down to that park, when i was younger, skateboarding to me was a pass time me and my friends thought was cool and confined to parking lots and backyard mini ramps. When i was introduced to the locals and OG's at beas, my entire life and perspective of skateboarding changed. I could go on for days, talking about the memories i have from that place. As im sure so could all the other members of the Beas crew. Pezzi was not only one of those dudes, but a lot of the times he led the pack! The next time my old broken ass skates at Beas, im going to try the gnarliest shit on that quarter that my body will allow, for you homie!!!! Thank you for your life, your inspiration and dedication to both Beas and skateboarding. You are terribly missed and the liquor we have all already consumed for you is no where near done. Shaka brugh.
HEALTHY 1-6 hanging w the girls at the arboretum 7. Black bean burger, spinach/broccoli slaw salad, sweet patato fries. A few weeks ago, i sat down after a long night of binge drinking with friends. I felt this urge of desperation as i looked in my pack of cigarettes to see one lonely square staring back at me. My throat sore, stomach uneasy and head pounding from the physical abuse i had been hand feeding myself through toxins, food and booze. Keeping a hundred percent real with myself, i love doing all three, smoking, drinking and eating. Deep down at my core im glutenous drunk, who can only socialize when subdued by nicotine and oral (pause) fixation. But as i sat there and stared into that pack, it felt like staring into a barrel of a gun. "Live by the gun....." I thought to my self. I decided that before the day, which is today, comes that i turn 35, i need to make some SERIOUS, life style changes from squares, booze, and junk food. Two summers ago, i went completely vegan for almost a year, and i felt great, the summer before that, i barely drank at all and i felt great, and a few years back for a summer i quit smoking. I made a promise to myself, that i would abstain from smoking completely, only eat meat on Sundays, (vegan + is what ima call it) and drink wine if im going to drink at all. Its been two weeks since i ate meat, 10 days with out a cigarette and today i start detoxing from alcohol. I feel really great about my physical future, my will power is on a 100 and theres something to say about that because previously i felt hopeless in that respect. The love your self / self relationship thing, that everyone has been preaching to me is finally starting to come to light. Actually i think I'm falling in love.
:( #rip why is it that only the good die young!!!! I wish we could go skate love park ONE more time. #mattreason #legend #philly #skateboarding #subzero #411vm
THE SEARCH FOR ANIMAL CHIN... (As gun shots go off literally around the corner from where I'm parked writing this) I would never claim that i grew up in Chicago, not only is it the most offensive thing to say to actual chi natives, but its just not true. However, Chicago did make me grow up. When my family relocated here in the beginning of 1998 for greener pastures and more significant opportunities for my fathers work as a metallurgist, i was scared. I shouldn't have been, but moving from a small and grimy steel city in Canada, to the huge metropolitan of chicago, was at least, terrifying. Exciting might be a more accurate word for the feeling in my chest, as my heart skipped beat after beat, staring up at the federal building on congress ave while waiting in line for "papers". In line with, what seemed like every immigrant in america at the time, outside in the cold huddled my two brothers, mom and dad and myself. I had just turned 18 years old and hadn't physically lived with my parents prior to this move for years. It was overwhelming. A few weeks before the day i stood in the cold i was reunited with my family in a small motel room in mount hope ontario. The house that we grew up in, in Hamilton was sold, my dads job finished and the prospect of Chicago close to reality. My promise to them, in exchange for allowing me to stand in that immigration line and apply for residency, was that i would shape up, finish high school and stay out of trouble. The days of punching each other in the face, yelling at the top of our lungs and even police calling my parents house were not yet over, but the new platform of Chicago made it quickly fade into disagreements of politics and government instead of he said, tattle tail, discrepancies. I graduated high-school, by the skin of my teeth; my parents sat by the phone graduation day waiting for my dean to call and give the final decision , as i sat in my room listening to Diamond D confidently eyeing myself in the mirror in my cap and gown. From that day forward, after i walked the stage in a south suburbs high school, I felt like i owed both my parents and Chicago a huge thank you. But in between that cold ass day in the cold and that warm summer walk across the gym stage, my teeth became sharper than ever from grinding them against the concrete of the chi. Chicago, i've watched you change. I may not be able to lay claim to you as my mother land or birthplace, but the streets, trains, e-ways and alleys all bare the scars of my final stages of youth. I vividly remember a time when the Damen stop on the blue line was one of the sketchiest places on earth. Going to Sub T for open mic Tuesdays back then was like playing contra. Now, that same stop is surrounded by kiché restaurants and shops, starbucks, urban outfitters and boutiques. Wicker park, as many of you know is THE most happening neighborhood for 20 something DIYers and hipsters. Like i said, thats nothing new, it is just becoming safer and safer as you expand out from that particular train station, the actual transformation happened years ago. But the real boom, and eye opener in the last 3 to 4 years is my old stomping ground of Logan Square and Humbolt Park. Its awesome to see some of the original businesses flourish with the gentrification and movement, but it also pains me to see some of the original neighbourhood dwellers and community being pushed out. Chiraq, as its become known in its recent history for having the highest murder rate in America consecutively, is by know means loosing its sharpening stones for young city kids. It is just in a different context and dynamic. The OG's might see it the same way, as we get older, that grandfather "walk barefoot 5 miles in the snow to school" tale starts to make sense. After spending a whole heap of time outside of the city this year and turning my back on distant memories and places, i realized two things. One that of all the places in the world and cities i've ever visited Chicago, bar none, is the fucking dopest!!!! And secondly, one of the major quests with in humanity is identifying where your from, and where your home is. We naturally want to build a family, reproduce and create a safe environment for the offspring. Im not one hundred percent sold that Chiraq is that perfect environment for me to quite call home yet, but if my final decision is to be a city dweller, Chicago is my Fist choice!
Hidden on the coast in evanston is this AMAZING gem!! #bahai #temple #meditation #chicago

BOSTON N BACK.
I whole lot happened in the last few days of my east coast visit. I dipped to Boston for a couple nights and worked in the studio with my good friend diego “aether” chavez, and worked on some new tracks for an upcoming, dark and personal record i want to put out. The bus ride, there and back on the mega bus, was grueling but the time i spent in Boston made up for it. An old friend and battle buddy, someone i served with in Iraq on my second tour, Jessica, came to visit me at the studio. We caught up on life, kids and how different things were in the civilian sector outside of a uniform. A lot of weight had seemed to be placed on her shoulders and we aired it all out over some craft beers on a very cold porch right across the street from Harvard University. The next day we spent secluded in the studio completely engulfed in music and production. We recorded 3 songs, i personally only like 2 of them but the mission was well worth it.
When i returned to New York, cheri and i went exploring again in manhattan. She showed me the south street piers and a few other spots on the bottom of the island and the end of down town. We googled statistics about sky scrapers and argued about the height of the new world trade vs the height of the sears tower in chicago. (I think NY cheated, because the antennae is the only thing in ny making it bigger…. Sears tower has more floors :p)
We checked out the new planet of the apes flick, (not bad. 3 1/2 stars) and headed back to BK.
Our last night there we skated LES, went record digging, ate some more bagels, and headed to skate night again at Epstiens, where i kicked some ass in the meatball eating contest and won a deck, bearings, and a bunch of other goodies. It was the Chocolate/girl 20th anniversary and they debuted their new video along with a few pros in the house. Before i left managed to interview “gizmo” an og nyc skateboarder, and grab a job doing sales and distro for nyc based Company “rockstar bearings.”
All in all it was a dope night!!!! Back in chicago now for a week before i head out again. Have some pretty sick travel plans for the fall!! Cant wait to write about them and take more pictures!
Im ready!
Last night I actually got to see the cubs win a home game before the end of the season!! #heychicagowhatdoyasay #cubs #wrigley #chicago
