Pronounciation: Tongue position

I bought new pants
1. 我昨天买新的裤子了(Wǒ mǎi xīn de kùzi le) 2. 你是什么时候买的? (Nǐ shì shénme shíhou mǎi de?) 3. 我是昨天买的 (Wǒ shì zuòtiān mǎi de) 4. 你是自己买的吗?(Nǐ shì zījǐ mǎi de ma?) 5. 是的, 我是自己买的 (Shì de, wò shì zījǐ mǎi de) 6. 你是哪儿买的? (Nǐ shì nǎr mǎi de?) 7. 我是从北京买的 (Wǒ shì cóng Běijīng mǎi de) 8. 你新买的裤子,怎么样? (Nǐ xīnmǎi de kùzi, zěnmeyàng?) 9. 很不错 (Hěn bùcuò) 1. I bought new pants 2. When did you buy them? 3. I bought them yesterday 4. Did you buy them yourself? 5. Yes, I bought them myself. 6. Where did you buy them? 7. I bought them in Beijing 8. How are your newly bought pants? 9. Not bad at all.
Three uses of 了 (le)
1. Something is about to happen or just started happening These are usually very brief statements ending with 了
下雨了 (Xiàyǔ le) It's raining Meaning the rain just started or someone just noticed it's raining. The change in the situation is that before it didn't rain but now it does.
上课了 (Shàngkè le) Class is beginning, let's start the class
快放假了 (Kuài fàngjià le) Vacation starts soon
2. Something has happened - 了after whole sentence
你吃了吗? (Nǐ chī le ma?) Have you eaten?
吃了 (Chī le) Yes I have. This is a very common and casual way for the Chinese to greet each other instead of 你好 (nǐhǎo).
我回来了 (Wǒ huílai le) I'm back, I have returned
我买新的裤子了 (Wǒ mǎi xīn de kùzi le) I have bought new pants
3. After something has happened - 了 after verb
下了课 (Xià le kè) After class is over
回了来 (huí le lái) After returning
买了新的裤子 (Mǎi le xīn de kùzi) After buying new pants This indicates you are telling something more about what happened. You could also replace 了 with 以后 (yǐhòu) which means after
下课以后 (Xiàke yǐhòu) After class is over
回来以后 (Huílai yǐhòu) After returning
买新的裤子以后 (Mǎi xīn de kùzi yǐhòu) After buying new pants
了 has more uses than this although generally it marks a change in a situation. Chinese doesn't have tenses the same way english has (e.g. do - did - done), instead the tense is often understood from little words like 了 or 以后 and of course context. I will tell more about this in the future.

Can you guess the loanwords? Four groups of loanwords, first three groups are themed. If you can figure one word, you might be able to smart your way through the rest of the group. Last group is more difficult, the words are not connected to each other in any way.

Question
Wouldn’t 请问,您贵姓 be more appropriate in a formal setting?
If you wanted to be extra formal, you could add 对不起 请问 (duìbuqǐ, qǐng wèn) excuse me, may I ask. But you are meeting someone for the first time so the context already allows asking basic introductionary questions. It would be different if you were to ask something more personal or asking a stranger for directions.
Formal introduction
1. 您好!(Nín hǎo!)
2. 您好!(Nín hǎo)
3. 您贵姓?(Nín guìxìng?)
4. 我姓王。 您呢?(Wǒ xìng Wáng. Nín ne?)
5. 我姓李。 您是哪里人?(Wǒ xìng Lǐ. Nín shì nǎlǐ rén?)
6. 我是北京人, 您呢?(Wǒ shì Běijīng rén, nín ne?)
7. 我是四川人。 (Wǒ shì Sìchuān rén.)
Translation
1. Hello! 2. Hello! 3. What is your family name? 4. My family name is Wang, and yours? 5. My family name is Li. Where are you from? 6. I'm from Beijing, and you? 7. I'm from Sichuan.
我回来了(Wǒ huílái le) I'm back!
Thank you 300 followers, and welcome all new comers! (◕‿◕)~💛
Introducing a new tag: #conversation I think we've practised just vocabulary and grammar long enough to start actually using them. A post tagged #conversation will include a short(ish) conversation with hànzì, pīnyīn and the english translation. No vocabulary or grammar explanations - I try to mainly use words and grammar I've already explained.
Beautiful blog! Really love how informative and organized this is. Other blogs like this don't give the pinyin, which is very frustrating for beginners like me. Keep up the great work!
Thank you! I can understand why some blogs do not want to use pīnyīn: too easy to use only that and not learn hànzì much. I use them because I need them and they help me learn tones, which are what I mostly have to check when creating a post - although not as much anymore c;
This is probably really annoying but I just wanted to say this blog is a brilliant idea and will be really helpful when school starts back up for me... so yeah 谢谢
Not annoying at all! It's nice to hear my blog is helpful to others.

Questions Grammar
In my post about interrogative words I was noted that the word order with 为什么 might be off. The example's were from my class notes yet after a little looking into it I found out that indeed, it wasn't right. Probably due to writing notes in a hurry. The original examples were:
他以前不告诉为什么? (Tā yīqiān bù gāosù wěishénme?)
你学习汉语为什么? (Nǐ xuéxí Hànyǔ wéishénme?)
Understandable questions but in my mind they now sound like "You study Chinese? Why?!" or "He didn't tell me earlier! Why?!".
I've corrected them now to:
他以前为什么不告诉 (Tā yīqiān wěishénme bù gāosù?) Why didn't he tell me earlier?
你为什么学习汉语 (Nǐ wéishénme xuéxí Hànyǔ?) Why do you study Chinese?
In Chinese, the question word is added in the place of the word you are asking about where as in English they are placed at the beginning of the sentence. 吗 (ma) and 干什么 (gàn shénme) are exceptions, you just add them at the end of your phrase to make it a question. Here's an example from each question word where I've 2) bolded the question word, and 1) an answer to the question where I've bolded the part that was asked about:
是,我是中国人 (Wǒ shì Zhōngguórén) Yes, I am Chinese.
你是中国人吗? (Nǐ shì Zhōngguórén ma?) Are you Chinese?
他是ANDY (Tā shì ANDY) He is Andy.
他是谁? (Tā shì shéi?) Who is he?
我叫珍妮(JENNY) (Wǒ jiào Zhēnnī) My name is Jenny*
你叫什么名字? (Nǐ jiào shénme míngzi?) What is your name? * Notice! 名字 (míngzi) is omitted from the answer in this case. Another way of asking this is:
我的名字是珍妮(JENNY) (Wǒ de míngzì shì Zhēnnī) My name is Jenny
你的名字是什么? (Nǐ de míngzì shì shénme?) What is your name?
因为我爷爷是中国人 (Yīnwěi wǒ yéye shì Zhōngguórén) Because my grandfather is chinese.
你为什么学习汉语? (Nǐ wěishénme xuéxí Hànyǔ ?) Why do you study Chinese?
This is a little trickier because it seems we are not removing anything for the question word like we did in the previous example. Let's take a look at it from another perspective:
我爷爷是中国人, 这就是为什么我学习汉语 (Wǒ yéye shì Zhōngguórén, zhè jiùshì wèishénme wǒ xuéxí Hànyǔ) My grandfather is chinese which is why I study it.
你为什么学习汉语? (Nǐ wěishénme xuéxí Hànyǔ?) Why do you study Chinese?
From this sentence we can understand the question structure because we can remove the answer, 爷爷是中国人 (yéye shì Zhōngguórén) and replace it with 为什么(wěishénme)
我跳 (Wǒ tiào) I'm jumping.
你干什么? (Nǐ gàn shénme?) What are you doing?
When accompanied with other verbs, 干什么 means also why but it is different from 为什么. It questions the action you are currently doing and is more concrete than 为什么,
我看这些地图 (Wǒ kàn zhèxiē dìtú) I'm looking at these maps.
你看那些地图干什么 (Nǐ kàn nàxiē dìtú gànshénme?) Why are you looking at those maps?
我要找到中国 (Wǒ yáo zhǎodào Zhōngguó) I want to find China.
我九月一日以前回来 (Wǒ jiǔ yuè yī rì yǐqián huílái) I will return before September.
你什么时候回来 (Nǐ shénme shíhou huílai?) When will you be back?
正确写这些汉字 (Zhèngquè xiě zhèxiē hànzì) Write these characters properly.
怎么写 这些汉字? (Zěnme xiě zhèxiē hànzì?) How to write these characters?
他倒下了 (Tā dàoxià le) He fell down.
怎么啦? (zěnmela?) What happened? 啦 (la) and 了(le) both indicate something that just happened, a change in a situation.
大学很大,很漂亮 (Dàxué hěn dà, hén piáoliang) The university is very big and beautiful.
大学怎么样? (Dàxué zěnmeyàng?) What is the university like?
这/那个我最喜欢 (zhè/nàgè wǒ zuì xǐhuan) This/that one is my favourite
哪个你最喜欢? (nǎgè nǐ zuì xǐhuan?) Which one is your favourite?

学院在哪儿? (Xuéyuàn zài nǎr?) Where’s the school located?
我学校有大概三万学生 (Wǒ xuéxiào yǒu dàgài sān wàn xuésheng) My school has about 30 000 students.
你学校有多少学生? (Nǐ xuéxiào yǒu duóshao xuésheng?) How many students are there in your school?
今天八月二号 (Jīntiān bā yuè èr hào) Today is 2nd of August
今天几号? (Jīntiān jǐ hào?) What date is it today?
放假! (fàngjià) To have a holiday!
我工作过都夏天!我放假八月上旬, 九月一日以前回来. 我可能汤博乐(TUMBLR)几次在放假。
(Wǒ gōngzuòguò dōu xiàtiān! Wǒ fàngjià bā yuè shàngxún, jiǔ yuè yī rì yǐqián huílái. Wǒ kěnéng tāngbólè (TUMBLR) jǐ cì zài fàngjià)
I've been working all summer and will be taking my summer holiday starting from 10th of August and will return before the start of September. I might still update a couple of times during this period. (Feel free to correct the Chinese here if you know better, wrote it in a whim!)
Remaining drafts (Beast parts III & IV and Verbs part I) coming up before holiday :)
Also! Thank you very much, there's already more than 120 of you when I didn't expect more than a few. 谢谢你们, 我很高兴 (Xièxie nǐmen, wǒ hěn gāoxìng)!
