90’s space anime parody

The story follows Ishmael Shahar, a guy that just wants to travel the stars and meet new and interesting life forms; maybe even cash in on some bounties or collect rewards for finding and delivering materials for people? Gotta fuel this ship somehow! Though these jobs should be easy enough, somehow he always finds himself in a tough situation, either by his own doing by playing the role of peacemaker or some outside force getting him involved. Talk about bad luck!

The theme of this post: space crew interaction! You would think I'm allergic to drawing them all together but it's hard to have 6 characters in one drawing okay!!! The most I can manage is like 4. I have posted some of these before on another post way back when I restarted my tumblr, but I think it's neat to just have them all here :)

What's more fun than playing dollies with your characters?? NOTHING!!! So here's a post dedicated to people who like characters KISSING!!!!

Ishmael is unfortunately the fandom (<- me) bicycle and I will admit: back then I just wanted to draw sexy space characters hooking up...a story came later LMAO. Is any of this canon? Eh *hand waves* Kaneeka & Ishmael do have a friends with benefits thing going on but now I'm wondering if I won't just have that...more subtle in the future 😅 With the amount of times I draw them making out or flirting with each other you would think that's the end game ship. Spoilers: it's not.

Also, if Aldena existed back then, she would be in this post too. Very sad I only made her last year 😔

ALSO ALSO: I think it’s funny that I drew Rai’xir even romantically touching, or pecking, Ishmael at all. Rai’xir is just…very reserved. I’d like to think kissing with mouths is kinda weird to Taran’dae (his species) but Syn’del does it because she’s…open to cultural exchange…? I need to draw her kissing everyone more since its fun for her LOL.

Celine and Thane are the worst products of my design indecisiveness. I don't really want to talk too much about them lest I spoil everything, but they are the Real Bad Guys™ that show up halfway through the story. They are both a piece of work: Celine uses Thane as her #1 trusted soldier willing to do anything for her, and Thane is her dog that lives to serve Celine.

The last two pictures are actually some I sketched on my iPad while working at a convention this year. At the time I was really frustrated with her uniform as a story-telling device. I just kept thinking to myself: the previous iterations are incredibly sexy, but an overall bad design. It doesn't say anything about her character at all. So I went back and forth with my friend to fix it! Lots of...differing opinions lol. We're still not sure about her design. Also I wasn’t looking at any past references when I drew her face so…she looks…different LOL. She always has a different face when I draw her I fear 😔 It’s a problem I have a lot when drawing my characters.

Even though Celine was originally designed by my friend, I took her and refurbished her into a Space Villain™️. Her personality inspirations include: White Diamond (Steven Universe), Ihadurca (Evil Zone), and Mirror! Kira Nerys (Star Trek: DS9). And if you know all or some of those characters then you know what kind of leader she is lol.

Thane was inspired by Linedwell Rainrix (Evil Zone), Knives Millions (Trigun), and Dilandau Albatou (Escaflowne). His uniform also doesn’t say much about his character!!! Like can you even tell he’s in the military? NOPE. I’ll have to change that in the future but maybe not by much. I am REALLY attached to those little metal bits on his giant shoulders 🤣 And I love a good Yugioh bondage design. Idk maybe I’ll keep most of it…he IS special after all so why be stuck with a standard uniform? Much to think about.

More 2019 - 2021 art!

There's a couple of funny mistakes in this post: Firstly, you can see that I wrote "pincers" instead of "mandibles" in that concept art. Secondly, I forgot to draw one of Syn'del's arms in that pic where she's striking a fashionable pose. No I will not go back to fix it. That's herstory right there.

I think it's so funny looking back at the first Syn'del and Rai'xir design I made. They had TAILS and NO MANDIBLES!!! I cannot imagine them without their mandibles 😔 I guess I passed the tail alien trait onto Aldena and her species LOL.

Can I just say: their species, Taran'dae, are SOOO ANNOYING LMAO. They think they're objectively better than everyone. What, because you're sooo smart, have amazing language skills, you're taller than everybody else, and you're all hot — huh what. What was I saying?

RIGHT so Rai'xir has probably changed the most in terms of characterization. His personality was WAY more entitled back then, to a very unlikeable degree. I have made him a smidge better. He's still pretty annoying and a total mansplainer, but that can be attributed to their culture. Even Syn'del does it and she's supposed to be the more chill and tolerable one. They just think they know better than humans!!

Also: GOD. I HATE THAT OUTFIT RAI'XIR IS IN. I really couldn't figure out his style all those years and just made him into a color clone of his sister that told absolutely nothing about him. 7 years later I am happy to say he does NOT wear that onesie anymore. RIP hot pink onesie Rai'xir. Current Rai'xir would be embarrassed by you.

This post I call: Ishmael & his kids.

AH! Where do I even start lmao. Cynthia and Xander have both gone through respective changes, specifically their age, but one thing remains unchanged: they are found family siblings (and Ishmael is their dad).

I try to make Xander the comedic foil in the crew, casting him as the “straight man” character archetype. I think it’s very funny having a 12 year old be the voice of reason in a mostly adult crew LOL. He’s a very direct and dry kid, but is also plagued by anti-social tendencies and gets pretty nervous in unfamiliar situations. Which the crew are in 80% of the time sooo—sorry Xander 😭 Originally, his age was supposed to be 10! But I thought: that’s too young for all this responsibility. 12 isn’t any better but…well…sorry again Xander!!!

Cynthia is a curious 4 year old robo cat child. She acts like both a 4 year old and a cat. Hijinks WILL ensue. Though back then I envisioned her a little older at 5-6 years old. If you see her height change a bunch it’s because I couldn’t decide her age!! She kept getting younger lol.

As for their relationship with Ishmael? Well…he “adopted” them I guess. He’s the most paternal out of the crew and takes cares of their wants and needs. Kaneeka is more like the cool alcoholic aunt. Syn’del is like the rad older sister that’s doing her own thing? Rai’xir is…not even entertaining this. He will not be included LOL.

It's hard to find pics of Kaneeka by herself but here are a few from her conception in 2019 (and the last pic being 2023)! She was sooo lanky when I first made her. And what the hell was I talking about in that first sketch?! I've obviously never drawn muscles in my life if I thought that was muscular LMAO. She went from serious -> crazy -> to playful musclehead. A character development I'm wholly happy with. She's great tbh!!! Wish I drew her more LMAO!!!!

Some exposé: All the adults on the ship are secretly envious of her in a non-malicious way. Kaneeka has the ability to light up a room and be 100% her authentic self while also being brutally honest! Something Ishmael, Rai'xir, and to an extent Syn'del, just can't manage. Another thing: while I wouldn't say she's the glue that keeps the crew together — that would be Ishmael — she is still the bit of cardboard you put under a table leg to stop it from wobbling 😌

Uploading old Ishmael art from 2019-2021 because I truly regret deleting everything off the internet LMAO. As you can see the style I'm using now is very different from this pink overlay version, but that's entirely intentional. I really want that 90's traditional acrylic paint swatch feel now. Some thoughts under the cut ⬇️

Obviously, Ishmael's design has changed throughout the years, but I am pretty happy where he's at now! Do I miss his very springy hair? Not as much as I hated drawing it LOL. Also for reasons related to the plot, all Saturn imagery has been stripped from him. I do miss drawing his cute little shoulder patch 😔 Even though that's gone, his outfit has remained relatively unchanged throughout his 7 years of development!

As for his personality, I was really aiming for this goofy character that seemed non-threatening, but would sometimes have these very intense moments that would send a chill down your spine. That is also relatively unchanged! I guess I made the perfect character during conception LOL. When I'm writing him though, he seems a bit more...stern with the crew? 🤔 Like an exhausted parent handling misbehaving children. So in the future I guess I want to draw some of his more serious/annoyed expressions. That's the goal.

ANYWAY! Some exposé on the art: I originally had Ishmael be more willing to spill some blood back then. So I would draw these VERY cool poses with his weapons but, honestly, that's so out of character now LMAO. The guns he uses are non-lethal. More like energy stun guns. A lot about his past has changed actually, but not enough to really affect his character. He's still a vegan, deceptively stronger than he looks, and loves his motorcycle.

This was the hardest sheet to complete because I was so indecisive about everything 😭 I think Kaneeka came out okay! There is a lot going on with her outfit but she IS doing a lot lmao. I love this obnoxious orange for her outfit and you can pry this color from my cold dead artist hands!! Side note: Kaneeka is one of the most expressive characters in the cast and I really struggled with what faces I finally settled on for a reference sheet. I drew 3 different expression sheets for her which is more work than I've done for any other character so I hope the final result is worth it 😭😭😭

i've finally finished syn'del's expression sheet. her design has barely changed yet i feel she was difficult to transition into my current style? it really is just the colors giving me a hard time LOL. i also realized i made her a bit more...cute? 🤣 her face is very adorable for her to be so mischievous LOL.

Cynthia's expression sheet is done!! She's so cute 😚 She's gotten smaller over the years. I've finally decided she's supposed to be 4 years old. Her mechanical parts have also changed design. I think having her arms & legs match looks much better 😌 I'm actually pretty happy with the color scheme too!! I was scared desaturating her would make her look awkward but I'm actually a huge fan of how this turned out!

Rai'xir's expression sheet done!! There's a specific way I wanted his "hair" to look but idk if I accomplished that...🧍‍♀️ Love the new outfit though!! The conservative way of dress but having just a bit of his throat show...idk that's kinda sexy LOL. I 100% desaturated his colors to try to make him fit in with the rest of the crew's color scheme. I think it turned out...okay!

Gonna just share some sketches/WIPs since I like to see the little differences from the final product!! The first 4 pics are the clean sketches for the expression sheets I need to finish. At least Ishmael and Aldena are fully done!! I just need to redraw Kaneeka's sheet and then sketch out Xander & Cynthia...The last 2 pics are a couple of months old hence why Rai'xir's outfit is his old one in the height lineup. I'm so excited to have an outfit for him that better represents his personality!! Am I sad I won't be able to show off his arm muscles anymore? Maybe, but that's why I have Kaneeka "will rip off the sleeves of any shirt" Ogwang lmaaaooo.
