Свидание с Америкой, 1993
October 4, 1993: the violent repression of the popularly elected Russian parliament by the oligarchical Yeltsin regime after it voted to impeach President Yeltsin.
Soon after tanks shelled the top floors of the parliament building armed forces stormed it. As the members of the parliament and their supporters left the building they were arrested and jailed. The following day Yeltsin banned the opposition parties and all their publications. Yeltsin’s action was strongly supported by the US government and its NATO allies.
According to the official data, 147 people were killed during violence, but unofficial sources estimate this number to be over 1,500.
On the foreground of the photograph a billboard with a cigarette advert saying “Date with America”.
