Figuring Territory (proposal).

In Montreal’s Ahunstic neighbourhood, the Bordeaux penitentiary carves out a 125-acre area in a seemingly idyllic suburb lined with trees and notable examples of mid-century modernism. Downstream the Rivière des Prairies, the recently completed expansion of the Laval IHC is nestled within a complex adjacent to industry and just south of a ruisseau curiously named Paradis.

Aerial imagery not only allows us to trace the construction and expansion of these sites, but also allow us to see how they “fit” into the greater landscape. Highways, airports, homes, industry, and hospitals border these spaces. So too do rivers, forests, farmland, and other natural areas that become impacted by these spaces built for our “safety”.

For most law-abiding persons, interactions with these spaces are non-existent. Yet these spaces are filled with black, brown & indigenous bodies who continue to be systematically demonized in the eyes of the law. For some asylum seekers, their first (and only) experiences of Canada are within the confines of a prison cell.

Corberó house, Xaviér Corberó, 1968-2017

There are many similarities between Corbero’s sprawling 40-year labour-of-love, and Ricardo Bofill’s reclaimed factory La Fabrica. Both look as if they’ve emerged from a Giorgio de Chirico painting, and both were gradually shaped into distinctive homes and studio spaces over the course of each architect’s life.

In the last couple of years, the properties have become popular as locations for print, film, and television. Both were used in the Emma Roberts- starring fantasy thriller PARADISE HILLS (2019), but the film’s filter-heavy fairy tale aesthetic doesn’t really do justice to their genuine otherworldliness.  For the best way to explore each, I’d recommend a couple of lovely short films by NOWNESS: IN RESIDENCE: RICARDO BOFILL (2014), and IN RESIDENCE: XAVIER CORBERO (2015). These pre-date the current fashionability of the buildings’ minimalist, arched forms, and look beyond them - to the way the two architects each sculpted a unique home which expressed their lives and artistic visions.
