Kuala Lumpur: Double Shot!
Had gone to bed really late Friday night (in fact by the time I was in bed and closed my eyes it was 5/6 am Sat morning), and had wake up pretty darn early this morning (8am to be exact but lulled back into bed but finally got up and ready at 10). Was hoping to catch an early lunch, but our errand ran later and we were only able to get out the door at 4! Half the day was already gone before I even managed to get my coffee fix! Let me just say, I was not a happy camper! We decided to try this new cafe, Aku Cafe, which was basically in our own neighbourhood only it was in the more traditional cultural part of town.
The first thing that caught my eye were the ant decor on the steps leading up to the first floor which was where the cafe was located. I got incredibly excited by it...I've not seen cafes using ants as a motif before, a little too excited we stood at the bottom of the stairs for quite sometime as I tried to set my phone camera up to take a picture. Once again I had forgotten my camera...this is KL...I just prefer to get around light and usually I just don't remember to bring it along. When we got in I was once again fascinated by the ants drawn on the walls as decor. The decor was very Chinese, lots of wooden furnitures, some of the heavier wooden chairs my grandparents and even my own parents used to furnished the heavy marbled dinning tables with. I didn't manage to take any good pictures of the interior since it was quite a packed house and just people everywhere. But I did get some of their more antique looking decor, like the standing fan and this adorable old wooden rocking horse. They had decorate the place to match with the upcoming mid-autumn festival with koi fish themed lanterns and the sorts, it was incredible pretty. The next time I'm gonna gush about is how the ant motif continued on to their menu design! I loved how each page had a smattering of ants scattered all over it. I swear I am not a bug loving person! In fact, I have no love for ants! I wasn't completely sure why I was so interested in the ants. Next was our food! I ordered an Ice Mint Coffee Blend and my sister had a regular ice drip coffee, we then ordered the Hainanese Toast and the Aku Pasta Special. The coffee was okay nothing to shout about but it was interesting if you like having fresh mint blended into your coffee for that minty herby flavor, it wasn't bad but it didn't have the caffeine kick I was hoping for. The toast was amazing- crispy on the outside and perfectly soft and fluffy on the inside with a good balance of kaya (coconut & pandan jam) & butter. Their pasta was really interesting in a good way, very strong flavors of dried baby shrimp and cilantro while the potato salad had a very clean peppery flavor, the little crispy chips above it had this really nice cinnamon flavor which just all went together nicely. I would highly recommend trying out the food if you're at this part of town, as for the coffee I can't say...maybe next time I'll go for a regular cup of hot coffee to give a more accurate review on that.

So I did mention that the caffeine boost wasn't really enough for me, nor did it manage to satisfy my sister so we decided to head to Coffee Amo, which was not too far from here for our coffee fix instead! It is located in a really interesting place which they share which this traditional Chinese cultural performing arts centre. I've been here one other time where I couldn't really give an accurate review in regards to the coffee for I had ordered a hot matcha latte. This time I went for a regular caffe latte while sister wanted to get their 3D art ordered a 'Sweet 16' (I think that was what it was called), it was basically just Macadamia Nut flavored coffee.
When my coffee was served my sister went, "Look! You got a turkey latte art!" It does look a lot like a turkey but I'm pretty sure the barista was going for a swan. So my sister dubbed it a 'Turwan', while I'm gonna call it a 'Swakey', we're just goofy this way. My sister's 3D latte art was just absolutely adorable, we couldn't decide if it was a lil' puppy or a teddy, but look at those pointy ears! It's gotta be a lil' puppy! The latte suited my palate, although I thought my sister's drink was a little too sweet for my taste. All in all, it would be an interesting place to bring a date, since literally EVERYONE there was a couple with the exception of my sister and I!
So you could try out Coffee Amo if you were ever in that area:
