You and Matt have been friends for as long as you both can remember. You guys were seen everywhere each other went, parties, your university or anywhere, it didn't matter where.
The music was loud, there were loads of drinks and the atmosphere was great, you found yourself dancing with Eider while you both drank. Matt, for his part, was talking with Nate while he didn't take his eyes off you. He always found you beautiful, but he refused to see you as anything other than his best friend, he didn't want to ruin what you two had, because he knew that if he took the next step, everything would probably be screwed up. So he decided to keep what he felt to himself, trying to forget it.
You noticed his gaze on you and returned it, smiling at him. One look, one look and your heart raced with anticipation. You noticed something different in his eyes and that meant everything to you. You put that thought aside, looking away from him, but all night you couldn't think of anything else.
Time passed quickly and the night came to an end and the place emptied little by little.
Matt moved closer to you, putting his arm around your shoulders, once again making your heart race.
"Let's go?" He looked at you waiting for your answer and you nodded, alternating your gaze between Eider and him.
"Yeah, could we take Eider? She..." and now the said interrupted you.
"Oh no, don't worry, I'll go with Nate." she assured walking away with a smile. "Bye guys." She waved her hand to say goodbye, losing herself out of your field of vision.
Matt's laughter and yours was the only thing that was heard in the car along with the soft sound of music in the background. He had told you a stupid, but funny joke.
Suddenly everything was silent, the music was now the only thing that was heard, but there were smiles on the lips of you two. You didn't know why but tonight felt different. As if something was going to change.
The sound of Matt's voice filled the silence, starting a small talk about what you two could do the next day.
"Do you want hot chocolate? I know a restaurant that is open all the time and it's very good." He asked you looking at you out of the corner of his eye, deviating from the way home to drive to the place already mentioned.
"Of course, I would love to."
You passed by the restaurant and he got out of the car to buy the hot chocolate. When he returned with both he offered you yours.
He blew on his hot chocolate to cool it and took a sip, humming at the flavor on his taste buds.
"It's too good, try it." He said nodding his head at your hot chocolate as he put his in the cup holder and started driving home. You tasted your hot chocolate and nodded, agreeing with him.
"I'm always right." he strutted with a proud smile looking straight ahead, making you laugh.
"Can I play music?" You asked looking at him and bringing your hand closer to the power button.
"Sure." He nodded also bringing his hand closer to the stereo, brushing your hand with his.
You knew it was just a touch, and that you're probably acting like a lovesick teenager, but damn it if you didn't feel anything from that simple touch.
He smiled gently, pulling his hand away and concentrating once more on the road, the car falling silent for the remainder of the drive.
The tension could be felt in the air, you could feel it on the way home. It could even be seen with the lights off. You're in love. And it was true love.
The next day you woke up in the guest room in the Sturniolo's house, and you walked to the kitchen when you smelled burning.
You were shocked to see Matt trying to make toast, but to his bad luck, he burned the bread.
"All good?" You asked with an amused smile painted on your lips, Matt looked up quickly at you, trying to hide the mess he had made in the kitchen.
"Yes, of course." He nodded convinced, leaving the toast aside and approached you, putting his arm around your shoulders. "Do you want to go have breakfast somewhere? I pay."
"Okay, just let me change my clothes." You nodded at Matt's shirt that was hanging on your body. He smiled proudly but hid it by clearing his throat when he saw you looking at him.
You were both walking on the sidewalk talking happily, walking towards that hot chocolate shop to take you for breakfast.
The moment was nice, although it was usually like that with him, but for some reason your heart was screaming for you to finally confess your feelings to Matt.
So you did. In a whisper, it was barely heard but he managed to identify what you said.
"I think I love you." And everything suddenly stopped. Even he stopped walking, looking at you puzzled.
"Nothing, forget it." you denied starting to walk again but he took your wrist to pull you closer to him.
"Are you serious?" He searched your eyes for some doubt, but he did not find it. You nodded sure of what you feel for him, looking at his eyes as well.
The longest seconds of your life passed as he held your body against his until he finally leaned his face towards yours to kiss you softly. Something strange about him.
His lips moved desperately, as if he had waited a long time to do that, and indeed if it was so. suddenly he separated, moving away from you, denying and cursing. You looked at him confused and tried to touch his arm.
"No, this is a mistake, we can't, I don't want to lose what I have with you." And your heart broke with that simple phrase, feeling a pressure in your chest.
"A mistake? What... what does that mean?"
"This shouldn't have happened, forgive me, but I can't." A spark of guilt flickered in his eyes and you swore you couldn't feel worse. "Let's go have breakfast and forget this ever happened."
A sarcastic laugh left your lips and you denied it without being able to believe it.
"No, I'm going home, you're a complete idiot." You ended up walking away from him and once again he tried to grab your arm to stop you but this time you managed to stop him.
The days passed after that day, you tried to avoid any place you knew he would be there, he tried to go look for you at your house but your parents took it upon themselves to drive him away while you watched as he left in his car from your window, still having fresh words that he told you the day you decided to open your heart in front of him.
There were more times when you went to parties with Eider but completely ignored Matt, Nate and Eider made it clear that you didn't want to talk to him at the moment every time he got close to you.
One day, it was raining horribly outside while you were reading a book at your desk and the smell of hot chocolate filled your room. The perfect moment, in your opinion. Then you saw someone's shadow reflected in the balcony window curtain. You took the closest thing to you so you could attack whoever was outside, which is an old tennis racket.
"Open up please, it's me." You identified Matt's voice and frowned, setting the racket aside. You opened the balcony window, effectively seeing Matt, drenched in the rain.
"This is too cliché, even for you." You muttered letting him in.
You quickly looked for a towel to offer it to him and he looked at you.
"Why? It's okay, right? Isn't that what you said?" You looked at him reprovingly, crossing your arms over your chest.
"I know what I said but it wasn't what I meant." He looked at you with regret and you denied stopping looking at him to look at the ground.
"It's too late, you should leave before my parents..." he quickly cut you off, leaving you stunned by what he said.
"I think I love you too..."
"What?" You looked at him without believing it, he got up from your bed and you looked at the wet place he had left. "You wet my bed."
"I don't care." he murmured approaching you, taking your face in his hands to look at you with adoration. "You're my best friend."
You waited for him to continue speaking and he brought his face close to yours to whisper the words that would make your heart race.
"And I'm in love with my best friend."
He finally met his lips with yours, feeling different this time. He was in love with you, you could hear it in the silence, you could see it even with the lights off, both of you were in love with each other.
After a few seconds you separated and the smiles on your lips were wide, his hand remained on your cheek, caressing it.
"You are going to dry the sheets on my bed."
You warned making him laugh.
