Someone has to choose duty btw. And sure, it's nice to be able to choose love and happiness instead, and to lord it over the person who chose duty as the better person with the moral high ground. As the one who truly cares about all the things you've both ever said you care about.
Yeah, the person who chose duty thinks so too. In fact, they're the one who wishes more than anything and anyone else they could have chosen otherwise too. Because wouldn't it be nice to be able to choose love and happiness, to choose freedom and the safety and safeguard of all that matters to you on an individual and personal scale, and to look down on the person who chose duty for having had it in you to choose otherwise?
And why wouldn't you look down on them when it's obviously the ideal choice to make, right? The only one to make in the face of all you've ever said you care about being at stake. If it were you, you would never--
But it wasn't you. These are all things you can say and think and believe in because it wasn't you. You weren't the one who had to look at the choices in front of you, at the only choices you were allowed to make; who had to look at duty being among them, at duty being what safeguards the existence of the other choices as long as it's fulfilled, and had to find it in you to choose it.
You're not the one who had to find it in you to choose duty as to safeguard the existence of the other choices for everyone else but you.
If there's no one who chooses duty, then no one's able to choose love and happiness either. If there's no one who chooses duty, then you're all too busy dealing with what choosing duty would have taken care of to choose love and happiness.
Someone has to choose duty.
That is what makes it duty.

Literally everything about Shamal is funny but terrifying if you look into him too deeply
The man is a walking biohazard and god only knows what’s going on inside his body. He pulls live viruses from his body to manufacture vaccines for the wackiest diseases you’ve ever heard. He’s apparently skilled enough in information erasure that it’s implied Reborn called on him to erase his existence prior to being an arcobaleno. The Varia tried to recruit him, and Shamal somehow has the power and sway to reject that???
His assassination style is “Geneva convention violation”. Governments would shit their pants to get their hands on him and what he can do, so he can basically never live a centralized life with a genuine, aboveboard practice.
He’s an explosives expert. He’s got the Johnny Bravo problem, where he is, in fact, popular with women (as evidenced by Gokudera thinking he has like, what. 42 sisters? 46? One of those) but we never see it cuz it’s not funny. He’s almost certainly a masochist with a ball busting fetish
He’s got magic mosquitoes, one of the worst offenders for vectors of disease transmission on earth. He’s a fantastic doctor when he can be bothered. He genuinely cares about Bianchi and Gokudera, but he shows it in the worst way possible at every opportunity (why? Afraid if it becomes too clear you care, someone will hurt them?)
Byakuran probably took him out extra early in the future because he was a genuine threat.
We never get to see him really shine because, frankly? Not only would he be op, the kinda shit he could do to enemies is way above heisei era jump censorship standards
Like. We only ever see the weird diseases. But there’s nothing that says that that’s all he’s got in his arsenal. And isn’t that just way too scary to think about?
