I personally am a cheap bastard and I have tried to felt with every fibre under the sun,

Yarn can 100% be felted, the secret is to fluff it out first with a wire brush, when I was a kid I bought 1kg of yarn from the thrift store and brushed it out with my cat’s brush and this was the base for almost all of my felted projects until I could buy my own fancy core wool haha

Although you can use acrylic yarn and stuffing to felt, it takes quite a bit longer as the fibres don’t have scales that interlock in the same way animal hairs do, this will also make it harder to achieve a smooth finish. But I totally dissected my fair share of pillows and used the acrylic stuffing as a base to felt with growing up, I actually went digging around to find one of these guys just to prove it 😆

If it’s what you’ve got already lying around I say 100% go for it, especially if you are new to felting and want to get the hang of using a needle without stabbing yourself fifty bajillion times

Any ‘wool roving’ is good to felt with, but my absolute favourite to felt with is corriedale wool which is less silky than merino wool so it felts really quick and gives you a nice smooth finish (used in the hen above!)

‘Core wool’ is sold under the name wool batting and felts super quick, undyed and pretty cheap to buy so is a great fibre to use as a base for larger projects.

mohair works well for giving some long fur texture (brown hair in dog below)

and mulberry silk is the secret sauce for ethereal gravity-defying unicorn manes, or in this case a dragon mane:
