ahem
When Porter first started racing, he was very wreckless and naïve. He used to go as fast as he could, pushing the entirety of his body to it's limit, until one day he pushed too far whilst racing with Momma. Both of them crashed, Porter taking the brunt of it. He's blamed himself for Momma being unable to carry freight ever since - hence why he cares for her so much when she takes Hydra racing.
During the crash, he damaged his chest badly, to the point where coal dust spread all over the track. He's had a hole in a pipe in his chest ever since, and hasn't been able to afford to get it replaced. Even if he could afford it, he's not sure he would. But now, whenever he races, he burns more coal, which results in more heat being generated and more coal dust getting into places where it shouldn't be. If he races, he has to spend days, potentially weeks in bed, waiting for his internal temperature to drop back down again and for his chest to stop causing him agony every time he dares to breathe.
He has a near-constant cough thanks to the coal dust, and his joints are almost always in pain due to the strain he puts on them via overworking himself, which is why he's sat down through a lot of the musical. He thinks that because he can't earn money racing anymore, he has to earn it some other way, via working.
He tries not to let Momma know that he's struggling because he doesn't want her to worry, and he makes his siblings and the engines get in on this to make sure she never finds out - hence why Hydra interrupts Momma when she's listing the freights she could race with, and why Rusty yells "No!" when she suggests that he could race with him.
He knows coal is a dying thing, and he knows he won't be able to work with it forever. If he could convert, he would - but he's too old, too damaged, too dirty, too much like himself- he's stuck as a coal truck for the rest of his life.
He was abandoned near this yard when he was seven - he was doing a job with his parents when they both decided they just... couldn't be bothered. Momma found him a week later, cold and hungry. She carted him back to the shed, and ever since then he's felt like he has to make sure she's never worried about anything.
His memories of his previous yard are very scattered - he barely remembers the faces of his mother and father. He remembers a lot of yelling, a lot of shoving and pushing, hot and long days - but that's about all that comes to mind. No celebrations, no soft moments, no caring, just one job to the next. Not fun when you're six.
THAT'S IT THAT'S THE END I LOVE YOU IF YOU READ THIS FAR OKAY BYE
