As a black person these are things that I'm dealing with. This is aside from being a queer person, aside from being a woman, and also aside from being of a melanin complexion often deemed as unacceptable by both those outside AND within my race. Creating the #LittleChocolateGirl platform came from having been called this growing up and it becoming a personal reminder that being of this deep "chocolatey" skin I'm still beautiful (even on the days I don't feel it) and that I'm valued and seen, even if that's just by my family. I have been called more names than I can count that weren't as kind from extremely early on in life and as a kid you think that's one of the worst things that can happen, right? I'm grateful to have grown up when I did because if I was a kid now I'd be terrified, as an adult I am, but I can't imagine the fear and trauma that our young ones are going through having to see the way our people and people like us are treated in society especially by those meant to protect us. I can only hope that by the time I have children things like this are no longer a concern but racism and the mistreatment of black people has gone on for longer than I've been here.
