A Sliver of Hope
He'd had reports sent to him about Cryno and the twins, but heâd put off making contact for too long. Cryno was touchy and he'd had no information that he could give the turian. Not that he had much now. But at least now, there might be hope, which was something he'd quickly lost when his older brother disappeared without a trace. The money he poured into finding him led only to heartbreak. But the lead he had now...maybe. If only he could bring himself to hope again. He rubbed his head, sighed and flipped on his OT.
[Cryno] We may have found a reliable lead on Neo.Â
[Cryno] I will let you know if anything comes of it.

Vimira offered a small nod, though failed to meet his worrying gaze with her own as it remained glued to the floor beneath their feet. âYes, a lot of my time was spent with the Hanar. Training and all that crap. I was never told the risks as a child of staying outside the domes for too long.â There was a light shrug, not exactly wishing to dwell on the matter further. But she set set his worried thoughts at rest when her eyes returned to his. âCan still be a pain at times, but I feel it isnât worsening. Donât worry too much.â She nudged him in the side lightly, hoping to at least brighten the atmosphere some. âWell I hope you succeed in that, sounds pretty darn difficult. But iâm sure youâll come through.âÂ
He grunted at her slight nudge, as if tremendous force had been put behind it. More to play into the action, than anything else. He took her hand an placed it over his heart. âMy heart would sooner stop beating than I could stop worrying.â The fingertips of his other hand lightly grazed her cheek. âHave  you been placed on transplant list?â In all honesty, he didnât think sheâd put herself on the list, in fact, heâd be surprised if she said she had. âThere is also..â he paused, lowered her hand from his chest, but kept hold of it. âThere is a cellular repair treatment the protheans have. Itâs not really been used on the newer races. Only two that Iâm aware of...a turian, more machine than anything else, it was not so successful with him. It was also used on one of us, but the man is not your typical drell.â His hand tightened on hers for a moment, fearing she would pull away when he continued, but he knew he could not keep his world, his friends, his life from her. She was a part of it all now. âHunter, Amonkal, is a God. Son of Amonkira and Kalahira. Of all places, he spends a lot of time here on the Citadel, so you may have already seen him. Heâs a giant of a man. Red with dark green, nearly black markings.â He released a breath, âRegardless, itâs a possible solution to transplants, if you wanted to try it first.â
They would talk more about Rakhana later if she wished, but right now his concern was her health. It pained him that she found it difficult to breath at times.Â
Lost and Found
âSounds good, will test that out when feeling better.â She replied while vanishing into the kitchen. After a few moments she re-appeared and settled back down beside Talyn, placing plates and any needed cutlery down, as well as the bottle of pop.
âNot as homely as many of you may think, for obvious reasons.â Vimira spoke while buttering a slice of bread, referring to the planets humidity. âThe hanar are friendly enough, was good friends with one when I was a kid.â She took a large bite and continued after. âIâv never been to Rakhana, donât want tooâŠiâv only seen pictures.â A small frown pulled at her lips. âAnd read the stories.âÂ
He tilted his head. âDid you live on the undomed outer islands then?â he asked curiously. He knew the larger islands were domed, artificially aired and dehumidified. Most hanar preferred to live below the domes, deeper down in the humid underground or the outer islands. The dehumidified air irritated their skin if exposed too long. âOr did your job require you to spend a lot of time under the domed cities?â He couldnât imagine being exposed to that sort of humidity for long periods of time. That reminded him of her Kepralâs. âI know you cannot get better without a cure or transplants, but the retro-virus vaccine - it has worked? You are not getting worse?â Concern laced every word. As far as he knew there were no failures, but he wouldnât rest easy until he knew what her results were.
He sighed heavily. âIt will take a lot for Rakhana to be what it once was. It can be, but not as things are now. Iâm currently working with the -â he was going to say immortals, but he wasnât sure if she even knew of their existence, â - some other investors. We are in the process of purchasing an arid planet. We intend to set up prefab housing, bring in trade and medics, then transplant my people from Rakhana. Iâve no doubt some will balk, but the only way to save Rakhana is to purge and reseed it. I have a team working with the salarians to redesign a shroud for that purpose.â His hand ran down his spines and rubbed the back of his neck. He shot her a sheepish smile. âIt is an aggressive solution, but,â he shrugged, âour people have destroyed the planet. There is little else that can be done.â

Again the woman would remain silent as she heard him out. She wasnât really sure what to say, it was so much to take in, but most likely was the right time to speak of such deep issues. Itâs not like she could strop off again.
The kiss was short, sweet and soft. There was no protest, it was gently returned. When she tilted her head away, her grip on his hands tightened with a sad smile forming. But it was also a happy one.  âI guess weâll try and keep each other safe thenâŠwhile learning along the way.â Both hands slipped from his and she stood up with a strained huff. âNow are we going to eat or not? Iâm starved.â She gave him a playful nudge  with her hand as she passed him and and into the kitchen to retrieve some cutlery and a bottle of pop.
A slow, quiet, relieved sigh fell from his lips as she rose. He hadnât been sure the direction things would go. If she would continue to fight herself and him or if she would accept that things were different between them now and allow them to move forward. âI shall very much enjoy the journey, Vima.â He would do all he could to protect her, even if he wasnât with her on a mission. Heâd already started on a new suit of armor for her, light, flexible, and should have a high protection rating and a few not quite so legal mods, by the time he was through making it. âAnd we shall protect each other as much as possible. I have been working on a new armor suit for awhile. It should end up light, flexible and protective.  Iâm hoping you would not mind using it, when after itâs completed and tested.â Of course, hers would have mods the suits he sold did not. Many of his designs were never meant for the public.
When she returned with the flatware, he thanked her and started opening the containers. The scents of breakfast intensified and his mouth began to water. He poured syrup over a thick slice of french toast, cut a square and then savored the tasty bite. âThis is so much better than the food we had on Rakhana. After I left, I thought my taste buds had died and gone to heaven.â He glanced over at her. âWhat was it like on Kahje? I was only there once and only long enough to meet with the hanar and sign them on for the trade route.â

Damn, should of never put the mug down. However she tried not to let the frown formâŠinstead she smiled, almost forcefully. It was difficult to maintain eye-contact, so her eyes remained glued to their hands together.
Her hands tightened with his as he spoke his heart out, the smile fading into what could only be described as a face trying not to cry. ââŠNo..I donât regret it.â She sighed heavily, her gaze finally meeting his. âI do..butâŠâ Another heavy sigh, eyes falling away. âI donât knowâŠliving as a Spectre makes you lock everyone out, for their own safety. Iâv never been in a lovey-dovey relationship before.â
âDo you think I have?â his voice cracked. âI started my company when I was young. Perhaps, too young. But after I escaped Rakhana, I was raised on Surkesh. Everyone my age was far ahead of me. I had to be better just to catch up. But even as young as I had been, I learned early on that women only wanted - â he looked down. âThey didnât want me - they wanted what came with me...power, money, my company...and they would do anything to get it. That is why I never let them get close to me.â He smirked, but there was no humor behind it. âEven when I matured and they did want me...they didnât want me for the right reasons.â His eyes rose to look at her once more. âYou are the first woman that has slipped through my defenses. Iâve never been in love before...Iâve never even had a relationship before. I donât know what Iâm doing...not in that department, but I know what it can be like. What my parents had...I know I want to have that with you...â His words faded into silence as he thought about what else sheâd said.
âSpectreâs do have risky jobs. I accept that and all that it entails. But, you have been made recently aware that mine is a risk as well...and Iâm not talking about the danger of being bored to death in the conference room. When you have wealth and power, others want to take it from you - by any means necessary.â His finger rose to feather just below her wounds. âThere is no safety. Safety is an illusion. You canât protect me, nor can I protect you. at least not as I would wish to. No one knows their expiration date, Vima. And running from that isnât living. I want you in my life...at my side...in my bed. I want to argue, drive each other crazy and fuck long and hard afterwards. I want to hold you close, talk softly about our days and the future, dance under the stars, and make slow, passionate love to you. I want to live a life with you, Lox...no matter how long or short that is, because each memory is a priceless gift that even pain cannot erase.â He leaned in and brushed his lips softly against hers.
Lost and Found
Vimira would only listen quietly, her worried gaze simply staring off into oblivion. Even the talk of flying wasnât enough to crack a smile. The warm mug of tea remained cozily at rest in both hands, though when he went to retrieve the food, she took a long sip.
Why would he have said such a thing when she was higher than the clouds? Did she reply with the same? The frown increased and she huffed a sigh, setting the mug on the table next to the containers. âI presume I said the same..?â Came a quiet question, her eyes on the tea.Â
When her frown deepened, he became concerned. Not that she didnât love him. But that she didnât want to so much so that it damaged things between them. Would she push him away harder? Or would she accept him and grant them each what little peace and comfort they can find during their struggle to survive?
Instead of answering her immediately, he took her hands when she set down the tea. âI know the times are precarious, and that we are fighting to survive, but I donât care to go into the fight alone, do you? I want something more than strangers or friends to fight for. I want something that will give me strength to go on during the darkest hours, or if Iâve lost all hope.â He squeezed her hands gently. âI spent so much time building a wall around my heart that I didnât even notice it had been breached. I love you, lox. You are my strength.â He sighed. âI know our jobs will part us on occasion, but knowing you are there...and that you love me. That is enough.â
His gaze did not leave her face. âYes,â he admitted softly. âYou admitted you loved me. I - I do not wish for you to regret it.â His words all but dwindled into a whisper.
Lost and Found
The woman only rolled her eyes at his teasing comment, hoping he didnât see it. She knew he was simply messing around, but then also knew he wasnâtâŠit was irritating at times. She savored another mouthful of icecream till the smell of coffee drew her attention. She set the tub on the table, jabbed her spoon in, then picked up the steaming mug of coffee carefully, its warmth pleasant.Â
Before taking a small sip, she dropped a small tea spoon of sugar in and stirred lightly. Both hands curled around the mugâŠa small frown pulling at her lips concerning his question. âNot as much as I wantâŠâ
He smiled, leaning back into the sofa. âWell, you told me felt like you were flying. I told you to not attempt it until you grew wings, because the fall would be unpleasant.â The smile quirked on his lips. âMind you, I would do my best to catch you, but I couldnât promise we wouldnât both end up on the ground.â
His smile slowly faded and a serious look took its place. âI also told you how I couldnât stop thinking about you, how I bedded no other woman after you. How I worried, how I searched for you.â He let out a ragged breath. âI told you that I loved you,â he said softly. He would not tell her what she said, unless she asked.Â
The door chimed and he muttered a curse under his breath. He gave her an apologetic look and rose to answer it. He grabbed the ice cream and placed it back in the freezer before getting the door. Â At least it would give her time to digest what he said.
He thanked the delivery man and returned to the sofa. He took containers from the bag and laid them out on the coffee table, before finally turning his gaze back to her, his look questioning.Â
Lost and Found
âIn your opinion, iâm not exactly a morning person.â The woman snorted, almost amused as she plopped down on the sofa and clicked the tv on simply for a little bit of background noise. The lid popped off easily and it was placed on the table, her own spoon digging into the creamy goodness and popping it in her mouth.
She glanced to him for a moment, smiling lightlyâŠshe was never one to decline free food. âSure, if you like.âÂ
He smiled and tilted his head. âPerhaps, you arenât a morning person, but lazy morning sex might just change the way you feel about mornings.â A charming, sensual smile spread across his lips. âWhen you are feeling better, we should test that hypothesis.â
He flipped his OT on and placed an order. A large order, with many delectable items for them to choose from. He then stabbed his spoon in the ice-cream and rose. âIâll be right back with coffee.â
In the kitchen he grabbed a couple of cups, programmed the dispenser and then put them on a small tray with cream and sugar. He set the tray down on the coffee table and sat back down next to her. âPerhaps, this will tide you over until breakfast arrives.â He grabbed another bite of ice-cream, unsure when she would put it back.Â
He added what he needed to his coffee and took a sip. He tended to prefer tea, but wasnât really all that particular. Caffeine had little effect on him. He turned his body a bit to face her. âDo you remember much about last night?â he asked quietly.
âDare!â
8. Talk to a teddy bear about all of your problems. (yeahâŠright)
He sat on the sofa holding a stuffed bear heâd gotten for Vimira. He was lying with his back against the sofa arm, his knees bent and the bear sitting on his belly, resting against his thighs. âWhy did I get you for her? Sheâll probably think your stupid.â Though he wasnât quite sure if he meant the bear or himself. âIt would be easier if I didnât think about her so much. If I could walk away and not look back, she would be safe from my enemies. I canât forgive myself for what they did to her. I donât know what to doâŠ.â he whispered the last line. When he realized he wasnât alone, he shoved the bear between the backs of his thighs and his calvesâŠhidden within the little caveâŠhopefully.
Rine blushes brightly as the smile grows on her face, Talyn reassured her and made her realize her fears were nothing to think twice about. She brings her knees up to her chest as the smile is bright, as her teeth pull on her bottom lip.Â
âThank you Talyn.â She smiles with a slight giggle in her voice. âI was so worried that I wasnât good enough, that he would get tired of waitingâŠâ She sighs softly before looking over at the drell beside her. âIt wasnât easy for me to let myself fall for him. I had the worse relationships growing up, I never learned to love and what it meant until I was in my late teens⊠And I learned it from watching a krogan and his bondmate.â She chuckles shaking her head. âHe taught me what it meant to love someone, how to look for it, how it wonât be easy. But the most difficult thing to learn is how to let go and love, trust that the person loves you for you.â She smiles softly before her feet move to rest on the floor her hand move to take his and squeeze it.Â
âYou might need to be the one to show her itâs okay to love. Sheâs a spectre and from what I have seen from fellow spectres⊠We need the push to be told itâs okay. Thatâs what everyone needs to be told, that itâs okay to love and be loved.â
It was good to see a smile on her face. âHe wonât get tired of waiting, not so long as you give him reason to hang on. Trust me, I know.â He blinked. âYou learned to love from a Krogan and his mate,â he said slowly. That was soo hard to believe. Krogan were not known for being cuddly. And undying words of love, were not something he would expect to hear from a Krogan. âTruly, intriguing.â If not a bit disbelievable.Â
He smiled. âIâm trying, Rine. Iâm wooing her every chance I get. I had to get her flying high on pain killers before she admitted she loved me. Now, all I can keep doing is keep wooing her for as long as she will have me.â He looked down and flicked an invisible piece of lint from his slacks. âThis is not something I ever wanted. I didnât want to fall for anyone. I was careful. But she slipped under my skin when I wasnât looking.â He looked at Rine. âIt probably even started when I met her. She intrigued me. She didnât care who I was. In fact, she rebuffed me over and over. That intrigued me more. She probably didnât even like me. But that doesnât usually stop a woman from trying to get me into her bed in hopes of either getting pregnant or getting married.â A soft smile formed on his lips. âYou didnât ask to hear all that.â
Lost and Found
So thatâs what it had been? Damn, she must of missed that rather important detail in school. Dropping out was probably to blameâŠBut that thought came and went in a blink of an eye. She bit her bottom lips to conceal a moan wanting to break freeâŠwhich it did when his lips met hers in a hot and hungry fashion. Eyes blinked open to gaze at him after the little moment passed in a flash.Â
Why..? She wanted to ask, but refrained from askingâŠright now anyway. Her stomach was protesting for food and had been since she woke. No affection was returned, not right now⊠She gently pushed him from his hold, both hands splayed over his belly till she slipped away. âCan talk later, iâm hungry.â The words might of sounded cold, but nothing was meant of them. She opened the freezer box and picked out a tub of vanilla icecream as she was in no mood to cook anything. She hopped back to Talyn, grabbed two spoons from the draw and handed him one before retreating back into the living room.
Her moan caused bolts of heat to course through his body. Something so simple: a touch, a moan, a look, watching her drink water, eat food, stretch and he was a goner. He needed her like he needed air to breath and he had to admit that at times it scared him to his toes. Heâd never allowed himself to fall in love. He refused to risk it. He controlled every aspect of his life. But with her, heâd already lost the fight before it began, it just took a bit for his mind to catch up with the rest of him.Â
He felt her gentle push. And despite enjoying the feel of her hands splayed upon his belly, he backed away to give her room to move. His brow rose at her words. Can talk later. She didnât seem irritated with him, so he watched her silently. Until he saw her pull out the ice-cream. Ice-cream? He smiled when he saw her grab two spoons. At least she had not forgotten about him. And it was ice-cream...he was grateful she was willing to share. He took the spoon from her hand. âIce-cream is a delightful way to start the day...only one thing better, but that will have to wait until you are feeling better,â he said suggestively.
He followed her to the sofa and sat down beside her. He dipped his spoon into the frozen cream and slid it into his mouth. His eyes closing. Sweet as sin. He dug his spoon in again and then looked at her. âDo you wish me to order something more filling to be delivered?â
