Miami Marlins are in first place!!! They are 5-1. Okay so they missed a buttload of games because they were overwhelmed with Covid cases. But that’s the amazing thing....... they are winning with 18 out of 30 being replacement players!!!!! Anyone seen the movie Major League??!

Baseball came back. Amid suffering, death, angst, and a raging Pandemic. On ESPN opening night I got teary eyed listening to Tom Verducci’s essay montage narrated by Jon Hamm.

I’ve been watching every game I can since Thursday night. I’ve become nocturnal; DVR games and watching through them to appreciate homeruns and double plays. Stopped cooking for my husband. We’re both teachers on summer break. We order pizza and Chinese, eat leftovers and sandwiches supplemented by microwave popcorn, cocktail peanuts, and cereal and milk. Back in my college days!! No time to spend in the kitchen. Now I have “brown eyed handsome men” to appreciate !

Why the dramatic change in me this season? I don’t know how many more I’ll get to see. Because Covid might affect me personally. I’m scared shitless because I’m high risk. I’ve contracted many colds, the flu that knocked me senseless, and chickenpox from my elementary students over the past 34 years in the Miami-Dade public school system. I’ve updated my will. I’ve self quarantined since March 14 only leaving the house for Doctor appointments. I’m 53 years old with diabetes, asthma, and a herniated disk caused by degenerative joint disease. I’m a dead duck. Awaiting announcement tomorrow. Praying for 100% virtual return for students and teachers.

Of course I hoped passionately that baseball would come back and I hope it will survive but I always had my doubts. Especially because I am a Miami native and I know my state I know it’s the one to fuck things up for everyone! Sure enough we’re the epicenter now in Miami. Did anyone doubt for a minute that Miami players were LIKELIEST to be the first to test positive and possibly spread it ????? Marlins testing positive and games are cancelled. What a surprise.

We are living in an internationally vibrant city where people come and go and never really develop a sense of community. They drive offensively, litter, and don’t care about implications. It’s only temporary for them. I’ve seen it all my life. The other problem is we live in paradise. It’s like being married to a chef when you have no tastebuds. What a waste! Of course people are going out and either flout the laws or don’t care.

But I need my baseball ⚾️. I need a postseason. Don’t care if my Marlins are out. I want to be able to appreciate the best of the best MLB can offer.

I was a season ticket holder for 5 years since Inaugural Season. Went to all 81 home games sometimes alone. Met my husband in 1997 and went to all home post season games including World Series. Experienced the win in Game 7. My dad said as we left,”When I was a little boy in Cuba I listened to World Series games on the radio. I dreamt of going to one. I can’t believe I would ever experience anything like this in my wildest dreams “! American Dream comes true

Please my boys of summer - stay safe. And if only a few healthy players remain and it’s time to call it quits... throw all those guys in one final game for all the glory. Give me one last game before I inevitability have to go.

My new friend. 7 year old terrier mix. Adopted through a private rescue group. My Girl was rescued all skin and bones at around 3 years old. Rehabilitation took a while. Adoption didn’t work out. A wonderful guy patiently fostered and trained her with his dogs for 4 years. She was the ONLY dog the rescue group still had available for adoption. He agreed to let us have her. He came over WE ALL WORE MASKS. She growled at us and we couldn’t pet her. He said to call him if there was a problem and snuck out the back door. We took off our masks. Every time we approached her she’d growl at us. I threw her a piece of turkey and sat down to watch tv with hubby. We ignored her. Within an hour she jumped on my lap and allowed me to stroke her. We’ve had her a month and it feels like she’s always been ours. 💕🐶

😞Our beagle died in May. Just woke up to find him like that in his bed. Vet told us it was likely a brain tumor from his symptoms the week prior. He just wasn’t himself. I’ve lost 5 pets in last few years and there was a hole in my ❤️. Could not live without a dog. Especially during a pandemic. So we looked into adoption. No puppies. Shelters completely empty except for giant pit bull/ bulldog mixes. Beagle puppies selling at local pet shops for $3,000 - $5,000!!! So I almost got scammed with “free puppies “ ads twice.

I miss baseball the most I think. Of course I’m a Marlins fan. I had season tickets for the first five years. I was at the 1997 World Series. Game 7 was unforgettable. But we sucked at first. I still went to all 81 home games.

If I’m stuck at home I wish I could be watching a game. Even if we suck.

The message is clear. At this point surely everyone knows there’s a pandemic. Are there still people out there who are not talking it seriously 😳? Every time this alert siren goes off I grow completely cold inside and understand what it’s like to be frozen with fear.

Florida’s numbers have almost doubled in 3 days. 9,000+ cases and 144 deaths. In Miami Dade we have 3,000 cases and 20 deaths. If we feel symptoms we call our doctor to get drive through testing at Marlins baseball park. Please don’t take me out to the ballgame

They let the two cruise ships dock!!!! In Ft Lauderdale across from airport. Americans and Florida residents quarantined. They’ve chartered flights to Toronto London and Paris tomorrow to get people home. The sick passengers have been taken to different hospitals 9 in critical care. Thank God our better angels prevailed.

There are still 25 ships at sea.

My dog is loving every minute of quarantine especially long walks. It is in the mid80s and hot. I need a pool or beach 🏖
