Special: What inspires Eiichiro Oda for "One Piece"?
A good Manga belongs at least as good research – as well as One Piece, where inspiration from the seafaring mythology, pirates and Media and more incorporated with.
In a few examples, we are included in this article. We’re talking of course of some unconfirmed facts but relations should I think be recognizable. But be careful: You should know One Piece to date, small spoiler could fall in the text!
Let’s start with the most obvious representatives: Marshall D. Teach aka Blackbeard (or in Japanese Kurohige). The relation to the infamous buccaneer pirate Edward Thatch (or also known as Edward Teach known), who was named Blackbeard are probably refute hardly. Even the black beard as a trademark took over Oda in the character representation. Edward Thatch is considered one of the most famous pirates in history and has been featured in several films, games or stories mentioned example in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag or Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides with Ian McShane in the role. Notably further as Edward Newgate alias Whitebeard is based on the said pirates.
Now we come to two crew members of the Straw Hat Pirates: firstly Franky. The cyborg is a ship’s carpenter and you look at his real name Cutty Fram, then this connection is also clearly on the subject of ships. This could be made up of the known sea carts “Cutty Stark” and “Fram”. Also Franky has character design at the beginning (before the two-year Time Skip) similarities with a famous cartoon sailor: Popeye whose forearms are amazingly wide and as older viewers probably know, is gaining strength by spinach. These facts based on Franky: He also has strong forearms (see figure above) and it is still used for coke as a fuel.
With Usopp / Usoop Oda built a Figure a, the champion of lies and false storytelling is. Here there are two things that symbolize: His long nose (see picture above), in which Eiichiro Oda likely to Pinocchio, a children’s book character of the Italian author Carlo Collodi, oriented and the names composition. Here meets the Japanese “Uso” (lies) with the famous fable writer Aesop together. In German, they made “Usopp” it to make the link with “lies”.
But One Piece also included relationships that relate to literature from the seafaring. That is the ship of the White Beard band “Moby Dick,” and this has a Walkopf as figurehead. It is obvious to allusions to the novel Moby-Dick, which was published in London and New York in 1851 and was written by Herman Melville. This revolves around the whaling ship Pequod, which Captain Ahab hateful the white whale Moby Dick hunts, which once tore his leg.
Another name modification can also be seen at the naval officers, which (translated: Peach Boy) on the Japanese legend Momotaro relates, in which said title Hero slipped out of a peach and the help of a monkey, pheasant and dog a three-eyed and three-toed, man-eating demon defeated , So combined Oda-sensei the name of a color and an animal – for example Akainu (red dog), Aokiji (blue pheasant, see figure above) and Kizaru (yellow monkey). Regardless of the forecast mentioned the mangaka this style remained true even when other naval officers, as roughly at Admiral Fujitora (‘Purple Tiger).
But even some Greek mythology flows in One Piece. If you look at the names of ancient weapons – Poseidon, Pluto and Uranus – then the origin is clear. All three refer to the gods: Poseidon is that of the sea, Pluton those of the underworld and Uranus God of heaven. Based on the Pluton One Piece is a powerful warship or Poseidon, the Mermaid Princess of Fishman Island, which has the power to summon mighty Sea Kings and control. About Uranus is so far not known, one can assume quite possible that it may refer to the sky. And while we’re at the fish people, the king of this island and underwater Shirahoshis father named Neptune, in which it is the Roman name of the sea god.
Also brought Oda-sensei in the Story section of Fishman Island, the legend of the Flying Dutchman (The Flying Dutchman) below. This is about a captain who has been condemned by a curse to his ghost ship for eternity at sea wander without being allowed to control a port or to find salvation by means of death. In One Piece exist certain parallels. So the run-down ship of Van der blankets II and its crew also carries the name Flying Dutchman. It probably dates from times of the legendary Van der Decken I, an ancestor of the current captain, who was at that time crazy and killed his crew. Then Van was the Decken I punished to stay with his ship forever at the bottom of the sea.
And finally, an example of the current events around the Donquixotte family on Pink Dress. Owes his surname Doflamingo certainly the fictional hero Don Quixote, who lived as a small Landadliger in Spain and denied as a kind of self-appointed knight adventure. Meanwhile Gaul was moreover Rocinante, why can be explained possibly why Doflamingos brother bears this name. Its Top 3 commanders were incidentally names with Spanish references: Trebol (clover), Pica (lance) and Diamante (Diamond). All figures mentioned five can be seen in the figure on the left in the top row. In keeping with the Coliseum on Dress Pink Oda was probably inspired by legendary Gladiator Names: The most famous in the One Piece story is probably Cyrus.
Perhaps also worth mentioning: Even the US rapper Eminem, is from the Eiichiro Oda supporter, inspired the mangaka in his own words with a character style. And now guess who that might be?
