WEEK 9: Lego Serious Play

ACTIVITY: Everyone in the class is involved in this activity. It's a combination of 'Rube Goldberg' and what we did for lego play. We used lego to create a stair for the ball to get down. Then, we used playing cards to become a bridge between the gap of two tables. Then, for the domino effect, we used Jenga blocks.

WEEK 9: Lego Serious Play

LESSON: We don't use 'play' to solve the problem instead, we work on them. So, what is exactly play is? Play is to engage in activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose. But, we have a different type of play than play for those children. Children’s play has no other objective, we, an adult play directed to specific outcomes.

ACTIVITY: On April 28, we did a Rube Goldberg. It was a group activity, I was with Jester, Trisha, and Rolly. (We have a video, but I didn't get it). On May 1, we did four tasks:

First: Build a model of a duck using only 7 pieces then. Later on, we remove 3 pieces, and it should still represent a duck.

Second: Make a creature. I created an easy to make: "human."

Third: To build a model to become a metaphor for how you feel on Sunday mornings. I and Trisha created a house.

Fourth: To build anything, and what does it represent? All of us mixed the creatures we created to create a Totem.

Lastly, after the four tasks, everyone has to create their own version of the tallest building. Every group competes, who has the tallest one.

WEEK 8: Improvisation in Creativity

LESSON: Instead of depending on our linear knowledge, we have to learn how to improvise. So, what is improvisation, it is the activity of making or doing something that you have not planned, using whatever you find.

ACTIVITY: The improvise object presentation was a sudden activity that we aren't prepared. I remembered seeing a video transforming hoodie jacket into a bag. We used that idea and create a skit involving it with another object to transform (jacket to splint).

WEEK 8: Improvisation in Creativity

ACTIVITY: We played a total of five games:

(person in the middle = ‘it’)

Signs: Each of us has their own sign. Sitting in a circle we pass the signs around, while the ít’ needs to guess who has the sign.

Minion Game: We are given an object to pretend like minions who has just come across this human object.

The sun shines on me... The rain pours down on me...: We are seated in a circle. The ‘it’ completes the sentence “The sun shines down on me when…” with something they like. If we agree with the statement, we have to switch chairs and the ít’ attempts to take a seat. Whoever is left standing is the next person to say the statement. The statement can change to “The Rain pours down on me when…” indicating a negative thing that he/she does not like.

Two truths and two lies: In pairs, each person shares two truths about themselves and two lies. Returning with everyone, each pair introduces their partner with one truth and one lie and the group has to guess which one is the truth.

"Yes, yes, yes… and that's awesome:” Standing in a circle each player is asked a question. They can give three answers. After each answer, the circle of players responds with ‘Yes!’ and finally after the third answer ‘Yes…and that’s awesome!’ There are no wrong answers and the absurd is celebrated.

WEEK 7: Parallel Thinking

(Didn’t get to photograph for evidence)

LESSON: Parallel thinking splits our focus in specific directions (hats). It puts forward as many statements as possible in multiple parallel tracks. After knowing the meaning, we discussed the six thinking hats.

Blue: the process of thinking

White: present the know facts

Green: creativity - to generate ideas

Yellow: state the benefits

Black: cautions - define the drawbacks

Red: Judge gut feelings on possible choices.

WEEK 6: Creativity and Subconscious

(Didn’t get to attend the lesson)

ACTIVITY: We have to create a game from our dreams. I was paired with Jester Domingo, we had a discussion about our dreams to learn our subconsciousness; both of us mostly have nightmares. The game we created is an interactive non-linear story utilizing a film like you were the one who is experiencing it. The story setting is in our campus, Bath Spa. Then, you saw your friend being terrified, not knowing what's going on. Until you found out that there's a killer who is roaming around the university.

WEEK 5: Design Thinking

LESSON: Design thinking is a process of continuous exploration and improvement. It has a non-linear process: first is to empathize, for us to understand human needs. Next, is to define the problem, after defining it, we may generate many ideas. Then, we have to create a prototype and it has to be tested. After testing it, if it's working we can present it as the final solution.

ACTIVITY: On March 24, we have to give a gift to our partner, my partner's name is Rolly Asuncion. Then, we interviewed them for us to discover their needs. I created a list of gifts, and he has to give his feedbacks. From that list, I chose the sound equipment as his perfect present. On March 26, we presented our work with our partner.

WEEK 4: Lateral Thinking

ACTIVITY: The first task, we must create an image from an incomplete figure or line. Then, in the backside of the paper: first, we have to design a useful, bizarre thing. It is a spoon with an inserted thermometer feature. With this, we may measure and drink it at the right temperature. Lastly, it is to ‘droodle,’ which is a mixture of doodle and riddle. First: is a close-up view of a horse jumping over a hurdle. Second: is a top view of a handbag.

WEEK 4: Lateral Thinking

LESSON: In our class, we had a discussion about lateral thinking, it is an ideation thining technique. It is a way of thinking which seeks the solution to problems through unorthodox. It was invented by Dr. Edward de Bono in 1967. Then, we discussed John Cleese's open and close mode.

ACTIVITY: It is to list at least five objects. With those objects, we must give each them a different name.

WEEK 3: Building on the work of others

ACTIVITY: We discussed the topic of reverse brainstorming. Instead of thinking for the solution, we have to think about how to create the problem. So, in this group activity, I am with Trisha and Lubna. We had a discussion about how do we increase the population; as in this world, we are currently facing overpopulation. Each of us lists our ideas on increasing population. Then, each of us gave our best answer. Using those answers, we can solve how to decrease population.

WEEK 3: Building on the work of others

LESSON: According to our professor, it is not really bad to steal other's work. It means to copy their idea by crediting the person who originates it. Without crediting that person, we are violating 'plagiarism,' which means claiming someone's work as your original work. We also discussed formalizing stealing: parody and pastiche. Parody means to imitate the style of someone's work with exaggeration for humorous effect. While pastiche is also to imitate someone's work but, instead of a comical effect, it celebrates the work.

ACTIVITY: For parody, I put Thanos with a group of Korean people; cause when I saw Thanos flicking his finger, it reminds me of a popular Korean hand sign. While for pastiche, which is I failed to do so. I was planning to imitate the popular painting of Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a pearl earring. And while doing so, I tried to get the same palette to color the mode.

WEEK 2: Collaboration

ACTIVITY : On February 24, we had a group activity with Trisha, Lubna, Kevin Hadi, and Julius, which is to create a game. So, we created a question and answer game with a twist. The twist is that in each group, they have a cup, where they have to hold it by their index finger. In order to win, they have to consecutive toss three paper balls to the other group's cup; or they have to successfully answer five questions.

GAME (MAFIA): It has two phases: 'night' when the Mafia secretly murder a citizen; 'day' when citizens vote in order to eliminate the Mafia. There are also a doctor and investigator. The role of the investigator is to seek for the Mafia and to gain everyone’s favor to eliminate the Mafia. The doctor targets a specified player to protect him/her from the Mafia during that night. The game ends when all the Mafia members are eliminated, or there are more Mafia members than citizens.

WEEK 2: Collaboration

ACTIVITY: The professor surprised us with physical activity. We have to roam around the campus to search for the items that are listed. Lubna contributed several things (mostly the objects) as she has many friends. Trisha helped the group with collecting sand and water. She also helped me search for the car model and counting the chairs. I was too focused on the library part as It was difficult to find it. Eventually, I gave up and searched it online. Then, I asked the technician about the number of routers; asked for the autograph of Academic Head. We were the first one to finish and won the game.

WEEK 2: Collaboration

ACTIVITY: The first activity (on February 19) was a failure. The object was a triangle we just drew a triangle and wrote the word "triangle." This time I am the one who starts first. I picked a crafted diorama aquarium. It was a project I had when I was in high school. After drawing it, I passed it to my right person. She wrote what she understood, and give it to her right person. It has to be an alternative draw then write their interpretation is. It continues the cycle until the last person. It's funny how it ends into Baskin Robin.

WEEK 2: Collaboration

LESSON: We discussed Twyla Tharp's perspective about collaboration. She said that "using other people's idea have a better application." If your concept is applicable in your life only, it is not a valuable idea. The idea will only be valuable when other people can apply to it.

ACTIVITY: We have to resume a story, and other groups will also continue it. The story is about a person having a near-death experience. So, I thought he or she can write a suicide letter. To add humor, we specifically instructed them to feed the cat. For other groups to continue the sentence, we wrote the part where he/she send his/her possession. As it continues, the person's gender has become defined, since she bore a child. Then by the center part, it became tragic thoughts, where she wishes to jump. It closes with a humorous ending, where Thanos catches her.

WEEK 1: Creative Introduction

Sir Ken Robinson said that education is in everyone’s interest. Education act as our achievements and the lifestyle we have. Schools teach us how to be employees, not as the employer. It limits our brain’s capacity by following what the experts say in the books. With this kind of education, it destroys children’s freedom to create, imagine, and dream. I’ve read a manga book (Japanese comic book), titled “Blue Period,” the book is about a high school man (Yataro Yaguchi) seeking what he wanted to do. He is intelligent acing his tests at his school, who discovered the joy of drawing. He got embarrassed to his friends that he fancies art; because people view it as a hobby, not a profession that is money maker; eventually, he pursued it. He was shocked that he needs to study the art itself, learning it’s techniques, choosing the right color, and be creative. An art teacher mentioned that only a small percentage of people who took art major passes their major. I think this connects with “education.” We only seek on how to gain money, but not allowing our expertise to profit. Also, when a child didn’t ace his/her studies, people view them as the illiterate. It makes children doubt themselves, and they will start to lock themselves and adjust in this dull world. Being afraid of mistakes is like killing your imaginations and start fearing of diversity. We should ignite the children’s mind to create. Break the old system and reconstruct education.

Week 1: Creative Introduction

ABOUT YOURSELF: The object I chose to represent myself is my own "body." I think my body says a lot about me, not about my appearance; but my personality. I have light shaded skin it illustrates introversion. Introverts tend to isolate themselves to think, reflect, and recharge. It doesn't imply that I don't enjoy my friends' presence; I love spending time with them. Introverts most likely, to be more aware of themselves. I would spend the time to reflect and examine my actions for that day. Spend the time to learn about "me," this turn to being nocturnal. I would consume my time just for that; it results in eye-bags. I prefer doing my work on the night rather than waking up early. Not only does it appear in my eyes, but also through my face. You can notice acne on my face. It indicates that I have anxiety. I would probably overthink and overanalyze that is happening. I always have a hard time dealing with decision making, preference, and my shyness. For me, my "fats" represents my laziness I'm not into physical activities. I may be lazy, but I work hard on my ideas that would suit my desire. Once again, my name is Zaira Mundo.

CREATIVITY FOR YOU: For me, creativity is like a mining place. It is the place where you can discover varies of minerals. It can be a rock or gold or even a diamond. Just like our ideas, it may be simple or something extraordinary. Underground is likely to have mines. Our creativeness waits for us to find them inside of us. Mining takes our time, effort, and knowledge. Creativeness needs to be work on every day. You can start by practicing on how to produce good ideas. Just like how you find the diamond, you have to refine it. Refine it in a way it is pleasing to your desire. Honing creativeness is a lifetime task.
