I've won with the secret squad [no achievements]
So the aetherbreach game has ended
whiteout challenge was harder than expected. Things I've learnt in no particular order:
stop collecting mushrooms; this is a bad habit
collect all coffee and drink it constantly instead of sleeping. coffee > energy drinks/stimulant injections because one can't afford to crash
I found a distress pistol beachcombing near misanthrope's homestead and could not have got past the PV bears otherwise; find distress pistol and head for timberwolf mountain's guaranteed rifle spawn at the very outset before the blizzards get bad. do not open all cargo containers and especially don't bother dodging predators to access containers below the summit; get only good kit, food, rifle and ammo, hatchet
spawns are in weird locations. a wolf spawned at the summit of timberwolf mountain. How did it get up there
apart from the surprise wolf, my character was never injured. Killed one of the PV bears with a distress pistol and just held flares while wolves ran and growled behind me for the rest of the game. Also ducked a lot
collecting lots of tea and cooking it in quonset on a blizzard day isn't a bad idea. get two pots from neighbouring houses
lantern oil was the hardest supply for me to obtain. I foolishly either did not properly read the requirements or assumed I'd find a jerrycan somewhere. I found very little and wound up fishing; for this reason and because it's very light, keep all 'line' that you might find and craft hooks later
fishing is a very slow way to obtain lantern oil. I had all or nearly all supplies by day 9 or so, but did not finish till day 15 because of the oil. Go to the fishing village at the western end of coastal highway; I found two lanterns there and one was nearly full, dropped them on the rather apocalyptic garage floor, and was done
I ran around the eastern part of coastal highway for two days then made the prepper's cache south of timberwolf by night four, dropped most equipment in a locker and slept properly, slept an hour in mountaineer's hut to save the game, slept in the warm cave at deer's clearing (also for the save), then made summit by middle of the night on day 6 or maybe the morning of day 7 and searched the cargo containers/repaired kit during the first blizzard. NB: if blizzard had arrived several hours earlier, this would not have worked. Took the most direct route and did not stop at skeeter's ridge but found decent loot in Thompson's Crossing on the way back, slept properly again, expended half of my lantern oil getting lost in the mine when I could have just saved some matches instead of taking only firestrikers. I did not attempt to visit other regions, partly because I had finally twigged that the oil was precious and partly because I don't enjoy desolation point
crafting bandages turned out to be a waste of time
it kind of worked to eat only MREs tinned sardines and milk. The 'dry' foods are obviously better to carry back.
this might be obvious but avoid firing the rifle. I found an eleventh cartridge randomly, I think in abandoned mine or the near by cabin on the very last day. Flares suffice to deter wolves (and it's nice to use them because they're heavy) and rifle shots don't reliably stop bears anyway. Carrying meat is perhaps not the best idea
on balance, this is the best ship playable for sunless skies, unless you wanted a lot of hull

finally, a strategy that works easily against greenmuck on hard (fully upgrade the teslas, wrath of the forest on the archers, and lvl three teleport on the mages, plus level 1 death ray for all :) i’d build this map from the centre out
for heroes this would probably work with malik too; someone without ranged combat but high health who can stand on their own at that joint. malik can freeze a group in place so he’s pretty great at stalling enemies between towers
