“Gamer Girls”

You know what, fuck “gamer girls”. Who gives a shit what gender you are while you are playing a video game. This isn’t find someone to reproduce with game, naw, this is fuckn kill that bich or we will lose game. Next thing you know we gonna get labels like “hot mom gamers” or “wearing a tank top gamers” ooh ooh or how about “got my wisdom teeth pulled out gamers”?

The reason some girls and women have taken a liking to the term “gamer girl” or “girl gamer” is specifically because of how they are treated in the gaming community (e.g. “girls don’t play video games!”)

If you have a problem with the term then please direct your ire to the community that has made them feel excluded. There’s no reason to get mad at them, they aren’t causing any kind of harm by identifying with their gender.

op is a little asshole. go play multiplayer (with headset, as a girl) and tell me who truly makes it about gender - you yourself or all the horny immature boys bullying you out of that game, harassing you, asking you about your breast size, and so on, while at the same time, all those shit stains complain online that girls don’t even play games and create movements to harass girls out of the gaming community (but girls don’t even play games right?!). honestly, so many people probably call themselves gamer girl or girl gamer to stand against that and be visible and to spite people like you, which gets them enough shit already, but we don’t need people like you complaining and tagging hate on tumblr when you clearly know nothing about the topic at all; it doesn’t even come to your head that everywhere, male is seen as the fucking default so anything other than that usually calls themselves differently or is invisible; only slowly, developers start to cater to women too in triple A games. by giving people shit about calling themselves a girl gamer you just associate yourself to the misogynists threatening and harassing girl gamers online and making a joke out of girls playing games. like, first ask yourself why it may have become necessary to some to call oneself a gamer girl (exclusion? the need for a space for women in the gaming community? easier to find other girls to play with, because people sure as hell don’t wanna attract men with that? pride?) than condemn it. what’s next? shitting on people who specifically say they’re an RPG gamer because they usually only play RPGs?

Okay holy shit. When I meant I didn’t like the term girl gamer (probably should have specified), I meant I didn’t like the fact that it has really just created a big divide in the gaming community. Guys use it in a way that over-sexualizes a girl that just plays video games. Even some girls are guilty of trying too hard to be this gaming sex symbol and be segregated from other girls. Not all girls actively try to do that, but YES there are girls that do. Sure girls are entitled to be portrayed in any which way they feel they want to be, but that doesn’t mean I should be comfortable with what those girls have done with the label for other girl such as myself and many others who get that label and the negative connotations that come with it simply because we are a girl that plays video games. In case you didn’t notice, there is this weird war going on between girls that openly advertise their gender in an unnecessary manner to attract males and those that wish for equality among genders in the gaming community who are claiming this title of “gamer girl”. “gamer girl” probably started out as a way for girls to be united in the gaming community but that term definitely has some negative connotations from the disputes between the two girl parties. MY POINT WAS: who even cares about the label and who is a “real gamer girl” and who is just a “gamer whore”. I was bashing the unnecessary feud it was creating between girls in the gaming community and how it is giving all girls, in the eyes of some males, this over-sexualized persona. If you ask me, it has done more to tear girls apart than it has to unite us.

I agree with the last part, there is a huge divide between women & girls who play games and identify with the term and those who dont. There are even in-fights between the ones who identify with the term: generally in the vein of “I’m a gamer girl not a girl gamer” (like that makes any sense to begin with). It’s all a weird struggle to be one of the “cool girls”, and imo it’s pointless.

The problem is still rooted in the community and how it views women. Don’t announce your gender with a feminine name or avatar or your own voice on a mic. Don’t make money off of streaming with a facecam. Don’t talk about how girls are treated differently. The anger tends to be directed at the girls/women even though they’re the ones being yelled at for really, truly absurd shit that hurts no one. We get mad because they give us a “bad name” instead of getting mad at the people who chose to both judge a stranger for her harmless behavior, and then generalize all of us because of that shitty judgment.

Anyways you totally don’t have to like every single girl who plays games, that’s silly. I’m just saying that, when I see posts like your first one, 99% of the time it’s misguided anger at being treated poorly (or just differently!) because you’re a girl too.
