As we welcome Prync to a very special part of this blog, we welcome a new project he has been quietly working on for some time now. To welcome the project, we are doing something we have never done before, a written interview. Enjoy.
What does Museum of Broken Relationships mean to you? Museum of Broken Relationships can have so much meaning. It doesn’t always have to mean love relationships. There’s many broken chapters with people like family or friends, but this project reflects on my stories with women from my past; emotions I have been through, hearts I misled. My vulnerability to express it the way I do on these songs, are all so different but, all the same. You go into a museum and see displays of people's art. They’re story. That moment of life for the artist. The emotion you get behind these words, paint a picture in your mind of your own experiences and something we can all relate to since we’re all human and have these ups and downs in life. That was me having to tap into that place that I never expressed before. So, this is my art display of my broken relationships.
Is there a certain inspiration behind the project? I wouldn’t say an inspiration but more of something I needed to let out for myself. You know we go through life with the mindset that no matter what, everything will be alright. So, maybe for me, I could be a better me by letting these thoughts out, that’s been putting weight on something I never got to see the good in. I don’t know what love is. Love isn’t something I’m used to so all I know is to get what you want. Never stay attached for your own protection and keep pushing when the time comes. And the time does come.. so maybe my inspiration was to close the past and say my peace for whoever needed to hear it from me, you know.
I've watched you for a while move through the city, what kind of effect does the city give to you within your music? The city molded me to be who I am today. Wise, aware and observant in any situation. When I’m on the South Side of the city, ‘til this day, it feels like home. Experienced wins and losses my whole childhood, all the way to a man but now I see why god put me through that. Not many people can maintain the mindset and confidence while chasing your real life calling. People work 9 to 5 which is ideal and perfect for a person, but it’s just different when you feel it in your body that those jobs aren’t for you. I feel like I was born for something more important. If this is a rise up my latter to be able to impact others lives, emotions and pain, I know for a fact that I was built to represent all those in one, due to where I came from. I’ve seen a lot.. lost a lot. Lost a lot in every part of my home town. That’s why everything in my music is real and honest, because I been through it. I can’t wait to be rich and spread my blessing all over the world but especially my home town. Give away! Do it like Bumpy Johnson and Frank Lucas and hand out turkeys on thanksgiving. That’s the boss I’m meant to be.
What makes you write the music you write? Someone told me once that my love life would be a story like Casanova’s. That suck with me, good or bad. The good was that he was able to protect himself while signing up for love, knowing it was always only temporary. So I worded it as a temporary forever, “wale wrote that in a song”, temporary forever was strong and honest. I guess that’s how I can express my Casanova ways.. well, my old ways. I write music about it because it was real. I’m not afraid to be alone, I’m afraid to settle. Music is how I paint all that for you to picture in your mind while you listen.. that’s powerful to me. For you to feel the exact same thing I felt knowing we have different lives and come from different places. Love is universal.
Lastly, if there’s one of these songs that means the most to you, which one is it and why? I can’t say that I have favorites. They are all different to me. Different things I went through made those songs in that very moment. It's very hard to re-channel what I felt when I wrote my music. It’s all emotion for me at the end of the day. People don’t give a lot of credit to producers but they start the emotional outbreak to be able to do what we all do in music. If I hear a certain piano or a melody or even a tempo, I naturally adjust and know what I want to do based off of what that beat made me project. It’s a beautiful process.
