Google Is Looking Into Ways To Rank Sites Based On Accuracy Of Information by @mattsouthern
In the future, Google may value the accuracy of your content more than the quality of your backlinks, according to a paper (PDF) recently published by researchers within the company. New Scientist reports that Google is working on a system where it can determine the trustworthiness of a page not by who is linking to it, or how many incoming links it has, but by the number of facts it contains. A score, called a Knowledge-Based Trust score, would be computed for each page by cross referencing the content with facts stored in Google’s Knowledge Vault. The Knowledge Vault is a database […]

7 Examples of Great Storytelling For Boring Brands by @sherisaid
Some brands are inherently sexy, like the Ford Mustang. The name evokes an immediate feeling of caution-to-the-wind youth and speed. Even though it’s been around for ages, Ford does a pretty good job of keeping the Mustang image fresh and current. There’s a lot of material to work with: history, style, engineering, innovation (not to mention that it’s a sports car). Sadly, we don’t all write content for Ford’s Mustang. Most brands are pretty darn boring. Marketers are called on to create compelling stories for things like toilet paper or tile grout and for companies that rent out heavy equipment or manufacture parts that […]

Google Extends Safe Browsing Protections to Google Analytics Users by @mattsouthern
If you’re a site owner there’s a good chance you have used Google Webmaster Tools, and you may have even encountered Safe Browsing notifications before. Safe Browsing is a feature built into Webmaster Tools that alerts you if Google detects something on your site that could cause problems for other users, like if your site has been hacked and began infecting visitors with malware, for example. Today Google announced it has extended these safe browsing protections to Google Analytics users. So users who only have Analytics set up for their site, and not Webmaster Tools, won’t miss out on any […]

How to Raise Awareness For Non-Profits Through Social Media Ad Grants by @krisjonescom
According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS), there are nearly 2 million non-profit organizations registered in the United States. Tens of millions of additional charitable organizations exist worldwide. Common wisdom is that if you want to help a charity all you have to do is volunteer your time or donate money. While time and money are important, I believe what non-profits really need is your professional digital marketing services (at a discount or for free, but more on that in a minute). Several months ago, I guest lectured to a “Social Responsibility and Business Ethics” class at Wilkes University in my hometown of Wilkes […]

Twitter-Hosted Video Can Now Be Embedded On Your Website by @mattsouthern
Twitter recently added a new feature to its service where you can capture and upload video using Twitter’s official apps, allowing you to tweet video without having to first upload that video to a third party. The only problem with this feature was that you couldn’t embed tweets with video into your website like you can with other kinds of tweets. Today Twitter announced a solution to that problem with a new embedded video widget, which works just like Twitter’s official Tweet buttons and embedded tweets. Embedding a video is as simple as clicking on the ‘•••’ button in the tweet […]

Google to Separate Google+ Into Two Separate Services by @mattsouthern
Google executive Bradley Horowitz confirmed late last night that there are some changes coming to Google+, and he has been placed in charge of two new branches of the social network. “Just wanted to confirm that the rumors are true — I’m excited to be running Google’s Photos and Streams products! It’s important to me that these changes are properly understood to be positive improvements to both our products and how they reach users.” The Photos and Streams products that he’s referencing are two components of Google+ that are being broken down into separate services. Earlier today at Mobile World […]

Should You Customize Your #SEO Strategy For Specific Niches? by @tomdemers
Most people would acknowledge that the contents of your site will play a major role in determining your SEO strategy. Few marketers or SEOs would argue the strategy for a large news-oriented publishing site versus a large e-commerce site versus a small SaaS site will be distinctly different, with varying level of emphasis on technical issues, content strategies, and link building tactics for each. It’s also pretty obvious that the amount of money and headcount you have to dedicate to your SEO efforts will impact what you can and can’t do as it relates to SEO. But there’s a third important factor […]
