THE HOMINIDS

One of the most interesting discoveries of modern anthropologists is that early hominids used tools long before their brains were much larger than those of apes. Hence the old idea that a large brain and high intelligence were necessary prerequisites for the use of tools has been discredited. The early hominids’ use of tools may, in fact, have been an important factor in leading to evolution of higher intelligence. Once the use and making of tools began, individuals that excelled in these endeavors would surely have had an advantage over their less talented fellows. There would have been strong selection for neural mechanisms making possible improved fashioning and use of tools. So perhaps, instead of considering culture the crown of the fully evolved human intelligence, we should regard early cultural development and increasing intelligence as two faces of the same coin; in a sense, the highly developed brain of modern human beings may be as much as a consequence as a cause of culture.

Cultural evolution can proceed at a far more rapid pace than biological evolution. Words as units of inheritance are much more effective than genes in spreading new developments and in giving dominance to new approaches originating with a few talented individuals. But the two types of evolution continue to be interwoven just as they were in the use of tools; they may well be even more so in the future.

CROUP

DEFINITION:

Croup, also known as laryngotracheobronchitis, is a type of respiratory infection that is usually caused by a virus. The infection leads to swelling inside the wind pipe, which interferes with normal breathing and produces the classic symptoms of "barking" cough, stridor, and a hoarse voice. Fever and runny nose may also be present. These symptoms may be mild, moderate, or severe. Often it starts or is worse at night. It normally lasts one to two days.

Croup can be caused by a number of viruses including parainfluenza and influenza virus. Rarely is it due to a bacterial infection. Croup is typically diagnosed based on signs and symptoms after potentially more severe causes such as epiglottitisor an airway foreign body have been ruled out. Further investigations—such as blood tests, X-rays, and cultures—are usually not needed.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

Croup is characterized by a "barking" cough, stridor, hoarseness, and difficulty breathing which usually worsens at night. The "barking" cough is often described as resembling the call of a seal or sea lion. The stridor is worsened by agitation or crying, and if it can be heard at rest, it may indicate critical narrowing of the airways. As croup worsens, stridor may decrease considerably.

Other symptoms include fever, coryza (symptoms typical of the common cold), and chest wall indrawing. Drooling or a very sick appearance indicate other medical conditions.

CAUSES:

Croup is usually deemed to be due to a viral infection. Others use the term more broadly, to include acute laryngotracheitis, spasmodic croup, laryngeal diphtheria, bacterial tracheitis, laryngotracheobronchitis, and laryngotracheobronchopneumonitis. The first two conditions involve a viral infection and are generally milder with respect to symptomatology; the last four are due to bacterial infection and are usually of greater severity.

DIAGNOSIS:

Croup is a clinical diagnosis. The first step is to exclude other obstructive conditions of the upper airway, especially epiglottitis, an airway foreign body, subglottic stenosis, angioedema, retropharyngeal abscess, and bacterial tracheitis.

A frontal X-ray of the neck is not routinely performed, but if it is done, it may show a characteristic narrowing of the trachea, called the steeple sign, because of the subglottic stenosis, which is similar to a steeple in shape. The steeple sign is suggestive of the diagnosis, but is absent in half of cases.

Other investigations (such as blood tests and viral culture) are discouraged, as they may cause unnecessary agitation and thus worsen the stress on the compromised airway. While viral cultures, obtained via nasopharyngeal aspiration, can be used to confirm the exact cause, these are usually restricted to research settings. Bacterial infection should be considered if a person does not improve with standard treatment, at which point further investigations may be indicated.

PREVENTION:

Many cases of croup have been prevented by immunization for influenza and diphtheria. At one time, croup referred to a diphtherial disease, but with vaccination, diphtheria is now rare in the developed world.

TREATMENT:

Children with croup are generally kept as calm as possible. Steroids are given routinely, with epinephrine used in severe cases. Children with oxygen saturations under 92% should receive oxygen, and those with severe croup may be hospitalized for observation. If oxygen is needed, "blow-by" administration (holding an oxygen source near the child's face) is recommended, as it causes less agitation than use of a mask. With treatment, less than 0.2% of people require endotracheal intubation.

PROGNOSIS:

Viral croup is usually a self-limited disease, with half of cases going away in a day and 80% of cases in two days. It can very rarely result in death from respiratory failureand/or cardiac arrest. Symptoms usually improve within two days, but may last for up to seven days. Other uncommon complications include bacterial tracheitis, pneumonia, and pulmonary edema.

EPIDEMIOLOGY:

Croup affects about 15% of children, and usually presents between the ages of 6 months and 5–6 years. It accounts for about 5% of hospital admissions in this population.In rare cases, it may occur in children as young as 3 months and as old as 15 years. Males are affected 50% more frequently than are females, and there is an increased prevalence in autumn.

HISTORY:

The word croup comes from the Early Modern English verb croup, meaning "to cry hoarsely"; the name was first applied to the disease in Scotland and popularized in the 18th century. Diphtheritic croup has been known since the time of Homer's Ancient Greece and it was not until 1826 that viral croup was differentiated from croup due to diphtheriaby Bretonneau. Viral croup was then called "faux-croup" by the French and often called "false croup" in English, as "croup" or "true croup" then most often referred to the disease caused by the diphtheria bacterium. False croup has also been known as pseudo croup or spasmodic croup. Croup due to diphtheria has become nearly unknown in affluent countries in modern times due to the advent of effective immunization.

My Mom and Dad

Life with out parental support can be a disaster. My Parents are one of

the most amazing people you can find around the world for all the sacrifices

they had made for me. I have great parents, and I still live with them. They

help me with every step of my life. They never turned me down or made

excuses about it. They are sweet and lovely. They love me and they would give

their life for me. I thank god that gave me such a great gift.

My Mom and have something in common when it comes to

characteristics but they also differ from each other. Both of them were very

caring and they also have the ability to inspire. They also have determination

as well as taking responsibility. Similarly, they also exhibit creativity and very

supportive.

But my Mom has patience and then more patience on top of that. She

has more positive attitudes than my Dad. She is able to survive harsh

conditions. She is not freaking out about doing things perfectly or according to

what everyone else says. She thinks first before yelling or hitting, or learning to

live with regret.

On the other hand, my Dad I could see that emotions don’t scare him.

He is up to sacrifice. He can’t control his anger and has a little patience. He is

overprotective especially to me as his only daughter. He helps me how to learn

proper boundaries and consequences. He shows love and respect and lives

totally faithful to his wife. He shares the workload as a partner with his wife.

I got a lot of support from my parents. That’s the one thing I always

appreciated. Even if they can be annoying, I know they want the best for me.

SWOT Analysis of Starmall Alabang

Starmalls is a subsidiary of Vista Land & Lifescapes engaged in the operation of shopping malls and office buildings in the Philippines. It is one of the major shopping mall retailers in the Philippines joining SM Supermalls, Robinsons Malls, Ayala Malls and Megaworld Lifestyle Malls. One branch of Starmall is found in Alabang, Muntinlupa City, which is formerly known as Metropolis and Manuela. During the process of environmental scanning last January 25, 2017, the SWOT analysis of the establishment was conducted, thus this report. This will only be limited to the scopes of Starmall Alabang and its corresponding strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats

Strength is defined as a good or beneficial quality or attribute of a person or thing. Upon entering Starmall, the red-Chinese themed design that indicates the celebration of Chinese New Year led the analysts to come up with the strength that is the conduction of monthly events. Starmall Alabang adapts to the monthly occasions in order to create a celebratory environment for the shoppers. In addition, they also conduct mall shows of celebrities and singers in order to attract more customers.

Another strength is its good security system. Guards are doing their rounds in every part of the mall and CCTVs are put in every corner to keep the stores and customers safe. Upon further wandering, it is observed that the mall has variety of stores and stalls, which gives buyers a lot of options or choice. The unique strength of the mall is the presence of sports centers such as swimming pools, gym, and bowling area where visitors could hang out and enjoy. Aside from sport centers, people could also enjoy their time on the highest floor or the entertainment area of the mall as they accommodate all ages due to the presence of arcades, cinema, and playground.

The conduction of monthly events, good security, and variety of stores and malls are part of Starmall’s strengths as their corresponding opportunities, these offered benefits to customers which is really a big advantage to the mall’s business. With the presence of their sports center, sports-oriented entities are considered as an advantage over any other competing malls. This mall has good security which was validated through interviews to the mall goers and it is also near to transportation terminals. Mall goers would feel safe because of the environment. Lastly, these strengths and opportunities could gain them satisfactory experience and feedbacks from mall goers.

It was really evident that behind the attributes that are clearly seen around an edifice, it still encounters weaknesses, and will afterwards result to threats which can surely affect the potential goers.

The mall has been experiencing poor funding, the reason why they were collecting entrance fee of 10 Php, which was totally disturbing especially to the mall-goers who are in rush to use the comfort room. So, for everyone’s convenience, it would be more effective if they will not implement comfort room fees at all.

There are some words of mouth stating that Starmall Alabang was as one of the top 10 scariest places in the Philippines. Tale tells of people seeing what they believe to be, people just simply disappear before their very eyes, tales of pick pocketing ghosts, items disappearing from store shelves and shop owners hearing strange noises and watching things move on their own. Maybe, because it was a reclaimed area, and stands on the former site of Alabang Cemetery. Many believe the bodies of the dead were never removed from the site and the angry ghosts are letting their presence be known and felt.

Starmall displays poor maintenance of structure. Therefore, it would be risky if the person prefers to use this. One of its characteristic was the elevator buttons that are hard to push and also the ones that are no longer useful. Hence, it would be better if replaced with new ones. Likewise, not all escalators are working. From time to time, they are in need of repair due to interior damage. So, requirement of stable maintenance technician is needed if that was the case on a daily basis.

The mall was also suffering from sanitary and cleanliness issues, there are some parts of the mall that are literally not in good condition, since the corner was not noticeable, they just neglect its cleanliness and just focus on what area is most visited. There is also a problem with the management of the space, because as there are lots of stalls blocking the way, while there are some parts of the mall that are over spaced. Therefore, they got to maximize the space that has not been used, for the mall-goers to walk freely along the way.

The team attempted to approach some staffs of the mall to make a short interview regarding the analysis. They are not accommodating, when they should be the ones who to encourage the mall goers to enjoy their shopping experience.

As the outcome of the environmental Scanning within the Starmall Alabang, the analysts came up with the assessment of risk crucial or the possible threats within the mall after knowing its weaknesses. First is the exposure and proneness to accidents of the customers. As a result of the poor maintenance and walkways, this is considered as a threat since the customers are being exposed to a tendency of accident that may result to damage or injury and maybe even casualty.

Due to its poor maintenance, the structure of the mall becomes weak. Therefore, it is conclude that the mall has another threat which is its inability to stand strong disaster. It further leads to the negative image on people within the mall which is another threat. But regardless of that reason, knowing that Starmall Alabang is an old cemetery or a “reclaimed area” it’s already made a negative impact on people that may lead to customers’ loss of interest.

Another threat is that the lives of mall goers are being risked, not just because of the poor maintenance of the mall and its weak structure but because the mall has a high level of parking that may result to untoward incidences. It is also noticed that some of their staff doesn’t know how to accommodate their customers. As a result there is a possibility of disputes between staffs and customers.

Lastly, the biggest undeniable threat of any business is the presence of competitors such as Festival Mall and the recently established South Park. The decision of the customers will be affected upon the presence of competition between malls.

With the stated analysis, it is highly recommended that the mall must keep its strengths and if possible, further improve them. It is needed to be done in order to keep its customer attraction and attract prospective investors. The structural framework of the mall must be taken care of, in order to prevent injuries and casualties. If possible, renovation is advisable. Walkways must be taken care of as to promote convenience among mall goers. Sanitation should also be a priority as it linked to the safety and health of the customers.

The purpose of the SWOT analysis is to assess the internal and external factors of the workplace in order to provide solutions and further improvement, as well as come up with ways to rise above the competitors. Business is always aiming for profit, and if that’s what they want, they get by being better each day. This SWOT analysis is a beneficial aid for a business to carry out its functions well. As said by David Joseph Schwartz, the success combination in business is do what you do better and do more of what you do.

DEATH PENALTY

Capital punishment, also known as the death penalty, is a government

sanctioned practice whereby a person is put to death by the state as a

punishment for a crime. The sentence that someone be punished in such a

manner is referred to as a death sentence, whereas the act of carrying out the

sentence is known as an execution. Crimes that are punishable by death are

known as capital crimes or capital offences, and commonly include offences

such as murder, treason, espionage, war crimes, crimes against humanity and

genocide.

The death penalty is a very complex issue and it’s something that many

people do not have clear decision on. Many people want to support the death

penalty while others don’t want to have this kind of law. Opinions on both sides

of the argument are very strong. Once the death penalty has been

implemented or approved, there’s no taking it back once you committed a

crime.

Few individuals are in favor of death penalty because they deserved to

be killed after doing something wrong or even taking other’s lives. This will be

their lesson and could lessen the big percentage of heinous crimes for they will

be afraid to be killed. This will give alarming to all people that this could be their

penalty after any crime committed.

The opposite point of view is that no one is deserved to be killed by the

government. You can’t kill a person just because he/she committed a crime. If

it is wrong to kill then they shouldn’t kill also. Death penalty isn’t a way to give

them a lesson. Those who are against it said that every life of a person is

sacred and that no one could take it even if it’s a killer. It was stated in the Ten

Commandments that “Thou shall not kill.”

In my point of view, I’m in favor of death penalty. Why would I be in

favor of this knowing that I’m catholic? Yes, I’m aware that this is God’s

commandment but look around us, how could we even possibly feel safe if

there are a lot of criminals waiting for somebody to be their victim. I am a

student and sometimes it’s already dark every time I went home. I am afraid

that anytime soon something bad will happen to me. Each one of us has

dreams and yet we still want to die. After hearing this kind of penalty, I was

thinking that there’s nothing wrong if they will implement this because if they

don’t want to be executed then they should stop doing crimes. This is just to

train everyone and this could drag the big percentage of crimes down. It is just

simple to stop doing crimes because penalty awaits them.

I could recommend the death penalty to the government but they

should be honest in doing this penalty like they should not kill anybody even if

the truth is that they did nothing wrong. This issue is really intense that gives a

lot of trouble too many Filipinos because everyone’s opinions differ so much.

THE HAZARDS OF INDUSTRIAL AGRICULTURE

Environmental and natural resources are our only remain sources to

fulfill one's needs and sustain health. Exploit of natural resources and dispose

of waste must be managed carefully because once it is damaged, it can affect

people, animals, plants, waterways, and other parts of the natural world. DENR

must emphasize environmental protection because in other areas, it has not

been a concern. This is to prevent highly polluted areas.

Health risks are one of the main issue when it comes to environmental

hazards of industrial agriculture.

Pesticides are used almost everywhere. This are the only toxic

substances released unintentionally into our environment to kill living things.

This includes substances that kill weeds, insects, fungus, rodents and others.

We all know that human exposure to pesticides is linked to health problems

such as headaches and nausea to chronic impacts like cancer, reproductive

harm, and endocrine disruption. When it comes to the environment, using this

can damage agricultural land.

Aside from pesticides, lead, contaminated water, mercury, carbon

monoxide, tobacco smoke and asbestos are the other types of environmental

hazards that pose health risks which could cause pollution of air, water and

land.

The water pollution which has a big bad effect to the conventional

farming methods because not only the plants could barely grow but also this

could damage the rest of the aquatic community.

Organic farming is the best way to do to avoid bad problems for this

prohibits the usage of pesticides, fertilizers, genetically modified organisms,

antibiotics and growth hormones. This could lead to the development of

enterprises that are sustainable and harmonious with the environment.

ANG BAYAN MUNA BAGO ANG SARILI

Do we really have to love our country first above our own interest? Does

setting aside our differences makes us work together and what advantages

can we get from it? What does “Bayan muna, bago ang sarili” mean for us

Filipinos? These question myself upon reading the first few paragraphs in the

article.

In our generation today, I guess it has been more practical that we think

of ourselves first before our country. That’s why we could see a lot of

wrongdoings particularly in the news that mustn’t be heard to the younger ones

especially in their generation.

It is stated in the article that “K.K.K” is the truest motto of our people.

Kami-kami, kayo-kayo or in short nag-kanya-kanya and worse, corruption and

incompetence had become more rampant involving more government officials

which is somehow not right.

I was sad a bit that we couldn’t apply in real life the “Bayan muna, bago

and sarili” but it is present when it comes to good speeches, good posters and

good for classroom expression.

I got touched when Ninoy himself said, “We must criticize in order to be

free because we are free only when be criticized. I do agree that criticism is not

an end in itself. Criticisms, as communication approach, enlighten and bring

out the people together socially and politically.

For me, I guess they got the right word which caught my attention –

“talk” with sense and pattern. I think that would be the best recommendation

for now. Since we are from a democratic country, then “talk” can be a great

service. As what it said that it is for intelligent debate. And we could possibly

gain unity among ourselves. Then with that, we can do things little by little

such as setting aside our differences.

The word “survival” is really hard to deal with but getting through the

recommendation, we ca really survive, as a nation and as a people. So, we,

Filipinos, must work together because the task cannot be done without us for

they can’t also do this all by themselves.

Seminar Reflection

PASSION FOR EXCELLENCE THRU EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

Ms. Angela

I really learned a lot from her and made a great impact in our

seminar. She was lively throughout our seminar without complaints. To build a

better work relationship, she introduced to us the new techniques for results-

oriented communication.

As she delivered her introduction, she shared to us the different

“Never Again List” coming from Bible verses. She always reminded us that

great communicators say what they mean, express not to impress and

respond not to react. They practice the law of connection. She added that the

ability to adjust is a sign of intelligence.

She explained a lot which inspired me. We need to be kind for every

person you meet is facing a battle. Nobody can make us feel inferior unless

you give them permission. People who are brutally frank are most often

remembered not for their frankness but for their brutality.

She then precedes to the main technique topics of how to be great

communicator. The essence of communication are inspire, influence and

impact. There are two kinds of people, a public speaker and a communicator.

The elements of interpersonal communication are verbal, vocal and visual. The

essences of confidence are self-knowledge, self-confidence and self-worth.

The T-A-B strategy which stands for think, action and benefit which guides us

when we are task to talk in front of many people.

She ended her seminar saying that success is of peace of mind

which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did very best. Great

communicators simplify the message, see the person, show the truth and

seek the response.

Problem: I have a schoolmate that really inspires me. The first time I saw him,

he gave butterflies in my tummy. Yes, I have a crush on him. At first, I told

myself that he should not know about this. I want to stay discreet in his eyes.

But when the time my friend introduced me to him it seems like he was hinted,

and I failed. I felt embarrassed at that moment. I don’t know how could I look

revealed every detail happen between the two lovers. It is a poem written by
