McGregor Tapped Out In 2...McGregor Vs Diaz Recap

3.8.16 By: Chris Nguyen UFC 196 was a wild night regarding to the co-main event and the main event. The two underdogs claimed victory by back-to-back rear-naked choke submission and on Saturday we witness a new womens bantamweight champion, Miesha Tate and Nate Diaz achieved the biggest win of his  MMA career. Nate Diaz took the fight on eleven days notice when Rafael Dos Anjos suffered a foot injury and it was announced by Dana White that Nate Diaz is the replacement. Conor McGregor is willing to fight anyone and in this case any weight class, McGregor made his welterweight debut and suffered his first lost in the UFC. The short build up leading to the main event was entertaining and thrilling to watch as well with two notorious trash-talkers exchange verbal assaults and profanity. Normally the pre-fight press conferences and interviews McGregor can say anything with the minor responses from his opponents but Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor went back and forth making it enjoying to watch. In the opening round McGregor was the aggressor, relying heavily on his left hand, the hand that knockout Jose Aldo in thirteen seconds and Chad Mendez in the second round, connecting Diaz a few time but not able to finish him like his past opponents. McGregor's movement looked terrific, able to slip and dodge Diaz boxing and landing a few nice oblique kicks. Mcgregor got the better of most of the exchanges but Diaz wasn't completely getting outstriked. The jab and the check right hook was two techniques That Diaz went to. When Mcgregor with the overhand left or the straight left hand, Diaz countered with the check right hook. In last minute of the first round Diaz caught a right leg and took McGregor down but McGregor immediately reverse and ended up on top for the reminder of the round. The dynamic of the fight turned when Diaz landed a 1-2 (jab, cross) combination that visibly wobble Mcgregor. All the loading up the left hand and the missed spinning kicks seems to take a toll on McGregor's energy and McGregor is on the defense while Diaz is now the aggressor. Shot after shot is landing, the repeated 1-2, the accuracy became overwhelming for McGregor and Mcgregor went for a desperate uncharacteristic double leg takedown but easily defended. The prediction was if the fight went to the ground, Nate Diaz would have the advantage because he is a high level black belt in Jui-jitsu. The sequence leading to the submission was glorious to witness. Nate Diaz attempted a gulliotine choke reminisce to Chad Mendes–when he attempted but in the Mendes fight Mcgregor rolled out and able to get to his feet–Diaz hooked McGregor right arm preventing him to roll out and easily mounted McGregor. A few ground and pound then Diaz went for a rear-naked choke and McGregor quickly tapped. Nate Diaz covered in his own blood raised his arm in victory.

UFC: 196 Holly Vs Tate Preview

3.4.16 By: Chris Nguyen UFC 196 is headlining by Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz but before that fight is the co-main event and the co-main event is being neglected, especially how the important this fight is. Holly Holm shocked the world when she defeated Ronda Rousey and became the women's bantamweight champion, and instantly skyrocketed into stardom. The dominance of Ronda Rousey made the women's bantamweight division stagnant but with Holly Holm the new champion and a having a completely different skill set, the division became interesting once more. With the crowning of a new champion, all of the Rousey's past opponent have another chance to become champion. This is the case with Miesha Tate, this will be her second title shot and she believes that her abilities and overall repertoire will make her the new champion. There is a lot of pressure on Holly Holm to defend the belt successfully but Holm is unfazed challenge. Unlike the McGregor-Diaz or the Rousey-Holm or the Rousey-Tate fight, there are no animosity between Holm and Tate but be certain they will make every effort to win. With this being her first title defense, Holm will have a tougher bout with Tate than Rousey because Tate is more well-rounded than Rousey. Miesha Tate, if she can, will make this a gritty and grueling fight–close quarter combat: clinch fighting, wrestling and ground and pound. She will learn for the Holm-Rousey and won't be a bull, rushing in recklessly, instead use striking as a smokescreen, setting up advantageous position. The striking ability that Holly Holm possess is unmatched by anyone in her division. The range and distance she keeps is difficult to penetrate, once she is comfortable and with her coaches–Mike Winklejohn and Greg Jackson–formulating the gameplan she is a champion difficult to defeat. It has been about five months since she been champion but it seems like she is attached to Ronda Rousey. The Media mentioning Rousey quite often, to the point it's becoming tiresome. This championship bout is very important to both fighter with something significant to gain and to lose.

UFC:196 McGregor Vs Diaz Preview

3.3.16 By: Chris Nguyen This Saturday is UFC 196, headlining the pay-per-view is the fighting Irish and featherweight champion, Conor McGregor in his welterweight debut against Stockton native and a veteran of the UFC, Nate Diaz. Initially the main event was Rafael Dos Anjos defending his title against Conor McGregor but with eleven days left Dos Anjos pulled out the bout because of a foot injury. Now on short notice Nate Diaz became the replacement and now part of the main event of UFC 196. It's red panty night for Diaz since Mcgregor is the biggest star in UFC, maybe in UFC history, and everytime McGregor fights it generates revenue but before the checks they have to fight. This will be Nate Diaz 21st fight for the UFC. He first stepped on the scene in 2007 when he won the Ultimate Fighter 5 finale against Manny Gamburyan and since then earned six submission of the night awards and six fight of the night awards. His last victory and performance he looked spectacular and in the post fight interview he gave a profanity laced speech towards McGregor. The short build-up and match-up is highly entertaining and interesting. stylistically both are similar but there are key differences. Both have accurate striking and both like to use their reach and range to pick apart their opponent. Nate Diaz is more of a traditional boxer while McGregor will use an array of striking techniques. That striking arsenal and Diaz repetitiveness is key to McGregor victory. McGregor prediction has been correct so far and he predicts another first round knockout. Conor McGregor said at the press conference "His repetitive foot patterns and his poor motions are too readable, too predictable, He'll be too slow in there. His speed will stifle him. His soft body and his lack of preparation, he will not be able to handle the ferocity." But don't count out Nate Diaz because he will bring the fight to Conor McGregor. For the first time McGregor doesn't have the reach advantage and if the fight ends on the ground Diaz will have the edge as he is a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu black under the tutelage of Cesar Gracie. The usual tactics and antics of McGregor isn't effecting Diaz like McGregor's past opponents. Nate Diaz downplay Conor's accomplishment by calling his past opponents "midgets" and belittle his training partners. The verbal back and forth is amusing but this Saturday the talking stop and the action begins.

UFC 196: McGregor-Diaz Press Conference Summary...A Verbal Firefight

2.26.16 By: Chris Nguyen In an impromptu thirty minute press conference at the UFC gym in Torrence, California, Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz brought the profanity and verbal bullets with a few shots at a few civilians (Rafael Dos Anjos and Frankie Edgar) and on Nate Diaz side, mention of alleged steroid usuage in the UFC. It was a rowdy crowd, reacting cheering and chanting for McGregor and/or Diaz when they say something candid. When asked how McGregor his involvement in this deal, Conor said "I am involve with absolutely everthing that got to do with. I am the who created this...Nate was the leading option they're were many leading options but in reality many, many people pretended they wanted the fight until the fight actually presented itself."  After that he mention Frankie Edgar and Rafael Dos Anjos stating "Frankie never shut up and then when he was given a phone call and a date, he hasn't been seen or heard since. Jose also, Jose was in camp preparing in case Dos Anjos pulled out, and then all of a sudden Dos Anjos pulls out with his bruised foot and Jose is not fit." Conor McGregor is notorious for predicting his fights, how and why he get the knockout and what round, for Diaz he predicts "He will be KO'd inside the first round." Then continue saying "His repetitive foot patterns and his poor motions are too readable, too predictable, He'll be too slow in there. His speed will stifle him. His soft body and his lack of preparation, he will not be able to handle the ferocity." When Diaz was ask the same question about his prediction he didn't responded but with a head shook. But it wasn't completely the McGregor show, Nate Diaz hold his own better than any of McGregor previous opponents. Diaz downplay Conor's accomplishment by calling his past opponents "midgets" and "midget weight division" repeatedly. McGregor went on the defense and was briefly shaken up when Diaz made an accusation about steroids. "Everybody is on steroids, the whole UFC Everybody...you and Dos Anjos and Pettis and everybody.” Originally Rafael Dos Anjos was set to defend his lightweight belt against Conor McGregor at UFC 196 but due to a broken left foot or a "bruise foot" as McGregor calls it, Nate Diaz became the replacement on an eleven day noticepeakinggor is use to his opponents canceling and he is at point now eager to fight. Nate Diaz being Nate Diaz said "I said yes from the beginning." Speaking about his readiness on this fight, "Whatever problems they had, I don't know but I came ready to fight any weight class it didn't matter. There was no hesitation on my part. I was ready to rock the whole time." Conor McGregor vs Nate Diaz will be the main event for UFC 196 on March 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dos Anjos Out Diaz In At UFC 196

2.24.16 By Chris Nguyen Yesterday Rafael Dos Anjos unfortunately had to cancel his championship bout against Conor McGregor due to a left broken foot, so the McGregor fight at UFC 196 was in limbo as UFC scramble to find a new opponent–just eleven days away from the pay-per-view. That night UFC announced that Nate Diaz is set to face Conor McGregor at UFC 196 but at welterweight (170 lbs). Nate Diaz is one half of the popular and always entertaining Diaz brothers. He holds a black belt under the tutelage of Cesar Gracie; ten submission victory on his professional MMA record. Diaz is notorious for his boxing skills and being verbal in his fights. The fight with Gray Maynard, Donald Cerrone and Michael Johnson demonstrate the accuracy and the boxing skill that Diaz have. His latest victory against Michael Johnson earned him the fight of the night award and that performance was his best performance by far. After the post fight interview Diaz went on an expletive rant calling out McGregor. Conor Mcgregor versus Nate Diaz will be interesting and entertaining fight. A fight for the fans to enjoy and be enthrall, everything leading up to the fight–the press conference, promos, interviews, etc.  Both have accurate striking but McGregor have the knockout power while Diaz is a volume striker. Diaz is more of a traditional boxer while McGregor is a kickboxer with a wide karate stance who value movement. Usually McGregor have the reach advantage but not in this case and if the fight end on the ground–unlikely it was be a stand up slugfest–Diaz will have the advantage. Even though Rafael Dos Anjos cancel Nate Diaz got the money fight now. Red panty night for Diaz.

Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson Finish Johny Hendricks In Round One

2.9.15 By: Chris Nguyen Adding another victory–this time again by impressive fashion–and still continuing his win streak, now six consecutive, Stephen Thompson defeat Johny Hendricks via KO in the first round. Johny Hendricks is a former welterweight champion and was rank #2 in the welterweight division. Seeing how "Wonderboy perform and how easily he won, he is in contention for a title shot or a #1 contender bout. Stephen Thompson have a unique striking stance, instead of the traditional boxing or Muay Thai stance, he stands sideways karate stance and often switch from southpaw to orthodox and vice versa. Once he got the distance and range, he overwhelmed Hendricks with accurate striking and an array of kicks. Hendricks' strategy was to close the distance so he can employ his wrestling but the initial takedown was stuffed and everytime he got Stephen Thompson close to the cage, he sidestep away. It was a straight right hand from Thompson that rocked Hendricks then came a flurry of punches and a spinning back kick to the body but ultimately it was a left hand that dropped Hendricks and secure a victory for "Wonderboy" Thompson. This Johny Hendricks victory sets up a title shot against the welterweight champion, Robbie Lawler, or at the very least #1 contender shot.

UFC Fight Night 81 In Boston: Dominick Cruz Reclaimed Crown...Dillashaw-Cruz Recap

This past Sunday bantamweight champion, TJ Dillashaw, faced off with the first and former bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz, in a highly anticipated, exciting and technical five round bout. It has been about four years and three ACL surgeries since Cruz relinquished the title; In what is a story about facing adversity, hardship and finally triumph, Cruz reclaim the title–a title that he never lost in the first place–when referee Herb Dean raise Cruz’s hand in glory and Dana White wrapped the belt around his waist.

But it wasn’t a decisive victory like when Cruz faced Takeya Mizugaki or when TJ Dillashaw defeated Renan Barao twice. A close split decision with two of the three judges scoring 49-46 for each fighter and the deciding score 47-48 for Dominick Cruz making Cruz the first ever two-time bantamweight champion. In the post-fight press conference, Dillashaw believes that he won. In most split decision victory usually there is a bit of dispute in who truly won and this is no different.

During TJ Dillashaw title reign a question that came up frequently was: “how would he do against Dominick Cruz?” There are certain traits in Dillashaw’s style that have been clearly influence by Cruz’s style, the attributes are highlight in both Renan Barao fights. But when he fought Cruz he abandoned his footwork style, a style that made him a champion, in third round–standing flat footed and loading on his shots. Ring rust was not a factor for Dominick Cruz as his footwork, movement, timing and overall excellent.

Dillashaw was obviously the aggressor in the fight, pushing the pace and putting pressure on Cruz. Everytime Cruz retreat near the cage, Dillashaw try to capitalize but Cruz either sidestep or angle away from the cage. Being the aggressor, Dillashaw got countered with a few jabs and on a few occasions with combinations. Dominick Cruz have always been known as an elusive fighter and this fight is another testament to that. As Dillashaw is missing his shots, it’s clear to see that he is being frustrated more so in the second and three round. A part of Dillashaw’s gameplan is to utilize the high kick, which he landed once or twice, but one disadvantage of the high kick is that leaves a off balanceness and Cruz deliver three well-timed takedowns–before this fight Dillashaw have never been taken down.

In the championship rounds, Dillashaw landed a single solid leg kick which seems to impacted Cruz for the rest of the fight. The high kicks were ineffective but the leg kicks were effective for Dillashaw. A few exchanges in the fifth round but nothing damaging. As the fight was winding down the crowd stood and cheer for the appreciation of the technical back-and-forth bout.

TJ Dillashaw may have the knockout power but power doesn’t matter if you can’t hit the target. Only 27% of significant strikes landed in juxpose to Dominick Cruz 37%. In the five round fight TJ Dillashaw total strike tallied 430 total strikes compare to Dominick Cruz 312 total strikes. It has been a long journey for Cruz but he is finally the champion once again and as champion there will contenders lining up for that belt. It doesnt matter who is next, it will always be a pleasure to watch a person like Dominick Cruz with a high mma IQ and the style he master and made recognizable…as long as he stay healthy.

UFC Fignt Night In Boston: TJDillashaw vs Dominick Cruz Preview

1.16.16 By Chris Nguyen The most important bantamweight fight in UFC history will be taken place this Sunday in Boston. Reigning Champion,TJ Dillashaw will prove that he is the rightful champion when he fight Dominick Cruz, the former champion who never lost in his bantamweight career and was the champion until he was stripped due to a series of injuries and inactivity. Dominick Cruz had only one fight in the last four years which he beat Takeya Mizugaki in the first minute; now a healthy Cruz have a chance to regain what was lost. Stylistically, both are similar but different at the same time. Both have incredible footwork and movement, they use a boxing technique called "shifting" where you switch stance from orthodox to southpaw and vise versa. But that's pretty much the only thing in common. Dominick Cruz is constantly moving, creating angles, constant head movement and quick shots. Cruz have taken boxing style from Muhammad Ali, Willie Pep and other to make his own unique style. TJ Dillashaw uses the shifting technique and uses his footwork to create angles as well but he sits down on his punches–meaning more powerful shots. Leading up to this fight, Cruz have been vocal about Dillashaw, Dillashaw's coach and how Dillashaw have stole certain characteristics from his style in interviews and promos; confronting Dillashaw in an interview. While Cruz been vocal, Dillashaw been quiet for the most part and will do his talking in the octagon. This is an exciting fight for the fans and a fight that is finally happening. It has been a long journey for Dominick Cruz, at one point he was best bantamweight fighter and now he make a return for the title. TJ Dillashaw title win and his two title defense have been spectacular–especially his two performance against Renan Barao–but this fight will prove Dillashaw’s worth as the bantamweight champion.
