   IF LOOKS COULD KILL... ;;   well, the look that settled briefly on his features would have certainly done so. oh, he'd been hearing that all day. you get experimental with an electric razor and SUDDENLY... however, the look faded into something more more neutral as he tilted his head back, rolling his eyes.

                  “ okay, sure. ” he started, pausing for a few moments before he                    brought his hand up in a slight chopping motion as he touched                     the top of the back of his head. a small, seemingly knowing, grin                      crossed his face. “ though, you know if i had stopped it here,                       nobody would say anything, so really... ”

   MARLON'S IRRITATION WASN'T PICKY. ;;  however, he was fairly good at controlling his tone when need be. last thing he needed in the moment was him blowing this whole thing because he decided to be a dick to louis, of all people. still, he couldn't help the small sigh that escaped his nose at seeing louis looking like...well, someone who wasn't ready to go on his hike with him. marlon wasn't oblivious, he knew louis would rather do anything else, but he figured he could motivate him or at least let louis make it fun. 

he wasn't a c o m p l e t e stick in the mud, despite popular opinion.

          she doesn’t want to hear any of it. SHE CAN’T LISTEN TO THIS. she can feel her anger rising, fire flickering in her eyes and hands curling into fists the longer she stands there listening to all the BULLSHIT that spews from his mouth. she knows that her entire face must be as red as her hair, that her face must be as HOT as the fire she feels ignited inside of her. she glares at him in the most deathly way that she can, though she wonders if it’s having the desired affect on him with the hot tears that well in her eyes. she doesn’t particularly care either way. marlon KNOWS that she’s angry with him, whether he shrinks under her death glare or not.

          they could bury her things, but it wouldn’t be the same. this wasn’t like the person had simply VANISHED and all they had was their belongings– MS. MARTIN WAS STILL HERE. her last moments were spent ALL ALONE and she was probably TERRIFIED and the more ruby thought about it, the more her heart SHATTERED. and the fact that marlon kept being such a HARD ASS was only making matters WORSE. but the fact that he’s comparing MS. MARTIN – the woman who had basically become their surrogate mother – to being just like ALL THE OTHER WALKERS out there is what stung the most. it hurt more than anything; A SHARP SLAP TO THE FACE.

          “ shut up– ” ruby attempts to cut him off, but he just KEEPS ON TALKING, and her anger KEEPS ON RISING. “ shut up–! ” still talking. he needs to stop. he needs to shut the FUCK up. the tears in her eyes have started rolling down her cheeks and her anger has hit the brink, BOILING OVER as she yells loud enough for EVERYONE in the school to hear her, “ I SAID ‘SHUT UP’!!! ” as the words bellow from her lips, she lurches her fist forward, planting one hard blow to marlon’s gut, not even realizing just what she’d done until after the fact.

          her eyes widen as her fist finally drops back down by her side and she lets out a shaky breath, trying to recollect herself, but it only results in choked sob and she brings up her hands up to hide her face as she cries, feeling angry and embarrassed and sad all at once. she can’t bring herself to apologize to him either. he deserved it. she was too LIVID to feel any sort of remorse.

    A FAMILIAR FEELING WASHED OVER HIM. ;;  the vibrations of anger humming in his limbs, could feel his heart pounding as he spoke—he could hear her telling him to shut up. Could see the anger in her face, much like the one that was pushing him to keep insisting he ha done the right thing. keep fighting, defending his actions. his s h i t t y actions. however, he found a response dying off as she shouted, much louder than he had been previously. marlon didn't have much time to react, to back away, when she stepped forward and planted her fist into his gut. he let out a half grunt, half yell at the pain that bloomed there, the force sending him stepping back a few steps. marlon held a hand there as he found himself wanting to kneel on the ground for a few moments.

                                    “ Ah, fu— ”

a low grunt escaped him again, shutting his eyes against the burning behind them. the tears coming out because of pain or anger, he wasn't sure, but he managed to keep them back. he needed to calm down—they both did, this wasn't headed anywhere good, if the current moment was saying anything. this was a fight he really wasn't going to win, and he really had no interest in hurting ruby any further. much as he was in physical pain right now. still, that old anger was gripping at him tightly, his teeth clenched as he purposely kept his head bowed. he needed to breathe—just breathe. go right back to that stuffy counselor's room—count back from ten, breathe. don't lash out. didn't seem to work at first, but eventually the ringing in his ears subsided, his stomach throbbing from what would likely be a nice bruise forming.

he was close to rising up, yelling a “WHAT THE HELL, RUBY?” back at her, but he pushed that down.

at hearing her sobs, marlon lifted his head, eyes still narrowed as he bared his teeth. however, his expression shifted somewhat, his jaw relaxing somewhat to let out a breath, the tightness in his brow still present. with a shakey sigh, he tried to rise himself up again, keeping a hand pressed there. the pain was making it hard to straighten up completely like he had been previously—she got him good. he stood there for a few moments, listening to her cry with her face covered—damn it.

                           “ i—i'm sorry, ruby, ” he repeated, his voice tight                             as he tried to hide the fact that he was a step                              away from either crying or yelling again, “ i                               didn't—i don't...i don't know what to do. i                                thought...i thought that was...shit, i don't know.                                 maybe...maybe we should just...talk about this                                 later. you're angry, and i'm gettin’ angry, it's not...                                  it's not good. ”

          she flinched on instinct, never having liked being yelled at – despite the fact that she knew more than anyone that she did the same thing whenever she got mad. it was a work in progress. she had half a mind to keep on walking, but, against her better judgment she stopped, quickly wiping at her eyes with the back of her hand in an attempt to rid them of any wetness before she faced marlon. she knew it wouldn’t do her any good to try to outrun him. he had much longer legs than her, anyway, so she took in a breath and turned to face him, eyes narrowed.

          “ what? ” she practically HISSED in response. she’d said what she had to say. she didn’t have any desire to talk to him any longer. still, she stayed and listened, and quickly came to the conclusion that if THIS was his way of trying to CONSOLE her somehow, or smooth this over, it WASN’T working. her eyes widened briefly, only to quickly narrow even more, frown deepening. “ you could’ve waited! ” ruby finally responded upon finding her voice again. “ it wouldn’t ‘a taken her THAT long to get out after us! ” ruby knew that ms. martin had told them to RUN, but – but she still could’ve made it!

          but really, what got under her skin the MOST was the fact that he had the AUDACITY to try to tell her that ms. martin wasn’t still ms. martin. it didn’t matter what her form was, she was still her. ruby could feel the stinging returning to her eyes, fist still clenched. she didn’t want to hear it. she didn’t want to hear ANY OF IT. ms. martin deserved a PROPER burial– she shouldn’t be left to suffer and only have her THINGS buried.

          “ why does that matter? ” ruby finally replied. marlon might’ve been trying to defuse the situation, but ruby just couldn’t– she couldn’t let this go just yet. “ what good will buryin’ her stuff do when she’s out there SUFFERIN’ and we’re not tryin’ to do ANYTHIN’ about it?! ” a few hot tears slipped down her cheeks. sometimes ruby felt like she was the only one who gave a DAMN about anything.

   HE KNEW THAT HE NEEDED TO HANDLE THIS CALMLY, BUT THAT WAS NEVER SOMETHING HE WAS SKILLED AT. ;;   still, he couldn't help the spike in his heart, the way his teeth clenched behind his thinly pressed lips. he wanted to point out that she wouldn't be the only one missing her. however, he bit it back. he knew she wouldn't be the only one angry about this, too. another thing to blame him for that he had no control over. marlon knew that they could have done more to get her out of the greenhouse, but it was too dangerous and that was simply it. he took a breath, his shoulders tense.

             “ she was bit, you know what happens. it's too dangerous, and she                  knew that. ” 

he still stood by his idea of possibly burying her things—as much as ruby seemed to be baffled at the idea. a part of him that still wanted to be a friend wanted to at least sooth some of the anger and sadness she felt—and he knew that he was the one who was only making it worse. however, marlon in the moment just wanted to be understood. he wasn't a murderer, he didn't want to be a murderer. she was dead, she was dying. he took another breath, trying to piece his thoughts together.

             “ she's GONE, ruby. she ain't suffering in there, she has no humanity                  left outside of the fact that she knows what she wants to eat. i don't                   see you shedding any tears for any of the other deadheads out there,                    how is she any different from them now? the ms. martin in that shed                     is just like them now. we can bury her stuff to put to rest who she                      was, but i don't see how putting the kids still living at risk is worth                       burying her as she is while she could take someone else with her.                        she wouldn't want that. we’re not doing anything because we CAN’T. ”

it was harsh, even marlon knew that, but it was his truth on the matter. she could hate him all she wanted on it, wouldn't be the first kid to be pissed off at him about something like this, but he wasn't moving on his stance.
