Matthias Jabs - Scorpions
1985
"I spent a lot of time with Ritchie when he was in Rainbow. We toured the US together in 1982 and even played soccer together. Unfortunately we beat them and Ritchie was very disappointed about that. [...] I remember telling telling him it would be a great idea for Deep Purple to get back together, and -I don't know if they'd already planned it -the following year, it happened at the Texxas Jam." -Matthias Jabs, Scorpions (source: https://www.musicradar.com/news/scorpions-matthias-jabs-your-solos-dont-have-to-be-easy-to-play-but-they-have-to-be-easy-to-listen-to )
This article and quote cracked me up. I actually can imagine Matthias having enough snide humor and sass to hold his own against Ritchie -and it may have been why they got along okay -but it still is pretty funny to imagine Rainbow, and the Scorpions playing soccer against each other and for Ritchie to hold a grudge against the Scorpions for beating them. (Not that it would be out of character for Ritchie!) Still, it was a gutsy move on Matthias's part to directly poke the thoughts of most Deep Purple fans at Ritchie while the latter was holding a grudge over soccer. Whether or not it was planned or not and if that anything to do with the choice to reunite it, props to Matthias for having it in him to even raise the subject.
