THE REAL ESTATE SHOW, 1980

Back in 1980 the artist group Collaborative Project Inc. (COLAB) undertook their most radical action when on New Year’s eve members broke into an abandoned city owned building and mounted an exhibition about the injustices surrounding real estate and housing in New York.  Housing issues have not gone away and today “The Real Estate Show” is the center of renewed attention with exhibitions at four Lower East Side galleries:  James Fuentes Gallery, ABC No Rio, The Lodge, and Cuchifritos Gallery/Essex Market.  You can learn more about this historic exhibition in the book  “ABC No Rio Dinero: The Story of a Lower East Side Art Gallery”(1985) now accessible online at 98bowery.com.

THE REAL ESTATE SHOW, 1980

This section from the book  “ABC No Rio Dinero: The Story of a Lower East Side Art Gallery” (1985) tells the story of the Real Estate Show currently the subject of an exhibition at the James Fuentes Gallery (55 Delancey St., NYC).  Organized by the radical artist group COLAB, the Real Estate Show took place in a abandoned city owned building that was broken into on New Years eve, 1980.   This controversial exhibition provided the template for the many social issue group shows that dominated art in the 1980s and was the direct source for ABC No Rio, a community art space still operating today.

STEFAN EINS: THE ENIGMA BEHIND 3 MERCER STREET AND FASHION MODA, 1970-80

Eins’ art explores mysteries and is often indistinguishable from demonstrations of magic, religion and science.  His creative strategies include appropriation, viewer interaction, and the treatment of art as low priced product.  One exhibition at the 3 Mercer Street Store focused on the wonder of flying and featured a toy hovercraft and a toy bird.  Eins’ interaction with gallery visitors was an integral part of the show, billed not as an art event but as a “demonstration and sale.”

STEFAN EINS: THE ENIGMA BEHIND 3 MERCER STREET AND FASHION MODA, 1970-80

Stefan Eins is one of the bridges that connected Fluxus with the artists of Collaborative Projects Inc. (COLAB) in the 1970s.   His openness to experiences and wonder about life allowed his own art to embrace radical new forms of appropriation and interaction.  This in turn led Eins to create two innovative art spaces – 3 Mercer St. Store and Fashion Moda -- that would profoundly affect the course of art in the late 1970s and 80s.

As the founder of two innovative art spaces, 3 Mercer Street Store (1972-79) and Fashion Moda in the South Bronx (1978-93), Stefan Eins has a secure place in the story of art in the 1970s and 1980s. Much less known, however is Eins’ own art. This online exhibition looks at his early work and shows how it is philosophically linked to the art spaces he was then creating.

GUERRILLA GIRLS: FEMINIST STREET POSTERS, 1985-1991

The Guerrilla Girls -- whose street poster campaign in the 1980s and 90s unmasked gender disparity in the art world -- have always insisted on anonymity both as a shield in their battle with the art establishment and as a way to emphasize that their work is collaborative and not about individuals.  To begin with there were seven members in the group but over time more than one hundred artists have participated.

Who are the Guerrilla Girls?  The members of the group have always insisted on anonymity both as a shield in their battle with the art establishment and as a way to emphasize that their work is collaborative and not about individuals.  To begin with there were seven members in the group but over time more than one hundred artists have participated.  The 1990 poster Guerrilla Girls’ Identities Exposed! teasingly embeds their names in a much longer list of over 500 art world participants who have supported their actions.

When the Guerrilla Girls, an anonymous group of women artists, began wheatpasting their first posters on walls in Soho and Tribeca in 1985 they introduced a provocative new type of politicized street art that laid bare widespread gender inequality in the art world.  Emerging during an era when many artists wanted to do work that effected social change, and when working outside gallery spaces was increasingly popular, the Guerrilla Girls can be compared to contemporaries like Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, and the artist collaborative Group Material.

NO WAVE AND INDEPENDENT FILM, 1976-1985

AN EXHIBITION OF PHOTOGRAPHY AND EPHEMERA

The No Wave and Independent films produced in downtown New York in the 1970s and 1980s are an intriguing hybrid art form that intermingles music, fashion, performance and visual art.  Coinciding with the rise of East Village art and nightclubs, the films linked themselves to the new art bohemia by prominently casting musicians, artists and nightlife celebrities.

KEITH HARING EPHEMERA, 1979 - 1990

e•phem•er•a (noun) things that are important or useful for only a short time; items that were not meant to have lasting value; items of collectible memorabilia, typically written or printed ones, that were originally expected to have only short-term usefulness or popularity.

This online exhibition spotlights Haring’s exhibition posters, invitation cards, promotional giveaways, and designs for record covers. Although these items were all intended for transitory purposes, they retain ongoing interest not only as markers of important events in Haring’s life, but also as aesthetic objects in their own right.

For Keith Haring the line separating fine art and ephemera was thin. His meteoritic career was marked by an unrelenting succession of works cutting across every medium and category of art.  This online exhibition spotlights his posters, invitation cards, promotional giveaways, and commercial illustrations ---ephemeral items that have lasting aesthetic value because they bear Haring’s signature imagery and style.

STEFAN EINS, “NO WAR,” 2013

SIGNED LIMITED EDITION PRINT

Stefan Eins makes a timeless and universal statement with this transformation of Peter Paul Ruben’s drawing of Leonardo da Vinci’s lost painting "The Battle of Anghiari" (1505).  In this limited edition print the call for “No War” is echoed in Arabic, English, German, Chinese, Russian and Spanish.

Eins is probably best known as the founder of the defunct South Bronx art space Fashion Moda (which lives on today as a cultural concept), and as the creator of the space’s distinctive logo utilizing different scripts in different languages.  He is an early practitioner of appropriation whose work often incorporates found imagery as a means to make universal statements that cut across cultural barriers.  Eins’s distinguished career as a fine artist has included major exhibitions in New York and Austria.

COLLECTING COLAB: 

EPHEMERA, PHOTOGRAPHY, & MULTIPLES, 1978 - 1985

The COLAB affiliated art space Fashion Moda, located in a desolate section of the South Bronx, illustrates how new art emerged in the late 1970s when young artists began seeking new audiences outside the traditional art world.  John Ahearn’s cast plaster portraits of neighborhood residents demonstrated that "interaction" was the key.   After a month of casting and finishing the portraits in the gallery, the busts were hung for a rousing closing party entitled “The South Bronx Hall of Fame.”

“Collecting COLAB” is an online exhibition featuring choice pieces of ephemera that track the history of the influential artist group Collaborative Projects Inc. (COLAB).  This 1979 invitation for the “South Bronx Hall of Fame” closing party is slightly larger than a business card.  Only four of these invites are known to still exist.
