Yes yes, Cullen smells of oakmoss and elderflower, but that's not all he smells of.
There is always leather that lingers on his skin, even when he is just in a tunic and simple trousers. It's a musty smell that sometimes scratches your nose.
In the War Room, his ointments barely make themselves present when the metallic tang of his armor covers them up. Brassy, sharp, maybe even sour? Not bad, if you are used to an armory. The gentle smell of polish follows, oddly warm.
At night, it takes a good nose to pick up the traces of Fereldan brandy that linger in the air along with the stuffy char of the fireplace. Take a few steps closer, and you get a wave of ink and parchment, as if the piles on his desk weren't any clearer.
Its when you tuck yourself into bed, followed by the groan of the wooden bedframe as he joins you, that you finally get the medicinal scent of that special white flower and lichen. Familiar and comforting like the fresh crisp air of the icy mountains that blow through the tattered ceiling you often tell the Commander to fix.
Its what you fall asleep to, what drifts you to a peaceful sleep you hope you shall share with him.
"Your hound is a mark of nobility in Ferelden, is he not? I have heard that gaining a mabari's loyalty is considered the ultimate proof of character there."
i've never felt anything like this.
Leliana and Josephine at Cullen when he finally emerged from the Inquisitor’s quarters the morning after the victory banquet:
Cullen: "Yes, I had the greatest night of my life so far. Thanks for asking. More importantly-- I'm still waiting on some important reports from the both of you."
(He's such a responsible kill joy 😂 They're probably just gonna to ask or tease the inquisitor for more juicy details. They're gonna get nothing from Cullen. 🤐)
You say he’s a responsible killjoy, but the way he’d be blushing at their blatant stares is entertainment enough for the both of them. 😂
"Andraste preserve me..."
Oh, we all know he is so much fun to tease, and he absolutely hates it. 🤣
(Shy boy hiding his blushing face or trying to change the subject 😚 ❤️)
from the kiss prompt! @butterabrod suggested 29, "a kiss on the inside of the wrist"
Cullen "Oh, I've fallen in love with a Mage" Rutherford

Dragon Age 2, Cullen Rutherford, you will always be famous
Not famous for being good... but he did get better 😭
Headcanon: Cullen does not like his hair being touched once he's styled it, but late at night when he's with his lady love? Those slower mornings they actually start being able to enjoy post-retirement?
He's half-asleep a few minutes into her running her fingers through it.
(Side note: I love that he styles his hair. My guess is that it helps him feel more in control of himself).

Cullen Rutherford x Evelyn Trevelyan
Cullen - Safe & Sound: chp 3
Evelyn was an oddity to him. Cullen was used to mages being cautious around him at best, outright hostile at worst. He didn’t begrudge them their feelings either, knowing what he’d done in the past. If anything, he deserved their distrust and vitriol. Instead of scowling at him with the aggression he was so used to, Evelyn smiled, and it reached those damn eyes. She said it was nice to meet him properly, away from a battlefield. He’d stammered like a fresh recruit, put on the back foot by the warmth in her gaze.
Evelyn - Safe & Sound: chp 1
Cullen Rutherford was intriguing to Evelyn. He stood a few paces away, hands up like he was ready to surrender. Their first meeting on a battlefield surrounded by demons was hardly ideal. He’d snapped at her, something about being worth the lives they had lost to get her there. In the war room of the chantry, after waking, he’d been kinder. Still serious, every inch of the man betrayed his training, but with softer eyes, the colour of dark honey that Evelyn found herself drawn to. He was certainly handsome, and the scar on his lip only served to draw her eyes more than once.... Despite having every reason to be wary, Evelyn didn’t actually hate Templars. It was too strong a word and something her peers didn’t understand. Plenty abused their powers with bigoted views; that didn’t stop them from being victims of the chantry in their own ways, and those Evelyn couldn’t find empathy for—she at least felt pity. Cullen had agreed with her, although she’d seen his discomfort over the subject. The way he’d avoided eye contact and masterfully steered the conversation to strictly facts about his time serving.
