First of all, Meiko is , indeed, a good character. She has her own development as Tri series continue, has a past-self and a present-self when they end. The problem with Meiko is that Tri isn’t good. I even believe that Meiko was the only thing right in that season (unfortunately this is not applicable to Meicoomon).
But, 02 kids are bad characters. Not because they are “replacing 01 kids” but because the producers make them copies of 01 kids. And I’m talking about design, character development and digimons. I mean, Toei didn’t even try.
If we talk about desing, Daisuke/Davis has the same hair and style as Taichi/Tai. And this could make sense because Daisuke is represented as some kind of a fan of Taichi, and they even tell you that they did it on purpose in the first episode as Takeru/TK confuse Daisuke with Taichi. But then he got the googles, and the fire jacket… Still, they made him interesting, giving him the personalities of two opposite characters as Taichi and Yamato/Matt. Besides, V-mon has evolutions beyond the ones showed in the series. So the only thing from Daisuke I’m going to complain is that he doesn’t change from episode 1 to episode 50, so he has no character development at all (the only episode where he may have some is when he gets the friendship digiegg at, honestly, it was ridiculous how they made it).
Next kid is Yolei. She has Mimi personality, Sora’s digimon and waist of potential. In the firsts episodes, Yolei doesn’t stop questioning everything, she even was in Koshiro/Izzy’s computer club. And, instead of mixing Mimi’s and Koshiro’s personalities (who are opposites as they show in 01), they mix Sora’s and Mimi’s. And they don’t even do it right! What has Yolei, beyond Hawkmon, from Sora? Nothing. And I love Hawkmon, but Toei didn’t even give him digievolutions beyond the ones from the series, they just didn’t care.
Now it’s time for Iori/Cody. The kid has 0 emotions, he is focus and doesn’t want to let anyone down (just like Joe), but he is not even half of curious as Koshiro or Yolei. I mean, they made this character so boring that the episodes where he’s supposed to grow or show-off are the most childish. His digimon has the same issue as Hawkmon or worst as the DNA evolution was horrible.
Finally, we get to Ken, who is the only character who has development. And don’t get it wrong, it was because he started as a villain and ended as the co-protagonist of the show. If we talk a bout design… just go see the clothes that he wears, I’m not wasting my time on that. Digimon… Wormmon can get to Mega without DNA, so that’s a plus. Besides, his role in the first arc was divine. Ken was the only good character, honestly. Even in the ridiculous part where they all dream because of Myotismon, he was the best.
Hikari and Takeru ended up being bad characters in 02 too as Toei didn’t gave them any development neither. Honestly, 02 makes me sadder than Tri because it could have been so much better and anyone wants to see that because they are so caught up in nostalgia. Oh well, hope this helped somehow.
