â what doesnât kill me better run. â
âGood thing that I never fail once I have set my mind to killing a creature, little one.â He smirks, cocking his head slightly to the side.
@a-little-ghuleh
Lilith laughed at his response, finding his confidence quite refreshing. How long had it been since someone had called her little one as well? Already she liked this Cardinal.
âSuch confidence! I would quite like to see how you would handle a stubborn kill,â she mused with a grin.
"That sounds dangerousâŠ.I'm in." @halflingvero (from the dangerous starters prompt list!)
âVero...â Lilith began, looking wearily at the other. Perhaps it had been a bad idea to tell them about the job theyâd accepted from hell. She could either agree to let Vero come or sheâd find a way.
âThis is a simple reconnaissance mission and we are only there to observe. Do you have dress ware? It is quite possible that we will have to attend a soiree and socialize.â

âYou could never know what itâs like.
Your blood, like winter, freezes just like ice.
And thereâs a cold, lonely light that shines from you.â
âNo, uh, I guess I wouldnât know what thatâs like. Iâve never frozen a person, just⊠tea and stuff like that.â The Sister replied, nervous. Fire came fairly easy to her but ice was still evasive. She hadnât been able to work through the sudden and immediate temperature change, even with the intent to do so.Â
âDo-do you think thatâs something I should learn?â
âIt is quite the handy spell,â she mused, tail flicking lazily behind her. Lilith wanted to say yes simply because it was fun, but she didnât want to scare the other away. Sheâd already made her nervous. So instead of giving a definite answer, she switched directions.
âWhat types of spells do you know? Do you focus on certain areas of magic more than others?â she asked curiously. Magical humans werenât something that Lilith came across very often, and most only knew little tricks. Cora seemed to have a spark though and Lilith wasnât going to smother that.
âI have some books you might be interested in though they deal more in the use of spell circles and such. A dying breed of spell casting really.â
âWell, arcane fire is a good one, I can do that pretty decent. Then thereâs Dancing Lights, like out of Dungeons and Dragons. Itâs not really Dancing Lights but thatâs just what I call it, I can make little light balls and have them hover or stay where I put them. I can levitate things fairly well now, even multiple things. What else? Nothing major, but I can do small areas of effect in about any school of magic. Like freezing little things or activating ritual circles. Oh! I can enchant things, like the door to my room, I like that stuff-âÂ
The Sister rambled almost to the point where she needed to be forced to take a breath. âI used to use arcane circles.â She noted, concentrating hard and forming a small one in front of her fingertips. âI had to use them because I had to think through everything, every step of what I was doing. Now I can do more âforce of willâ or intent. If I really want to cast, I just do this-âÂ
The circle dissipated, forming instead into a small ball of light on the end of her middle and index fingers.Â
âThis seems to work a little better for me now.â
Once Cora started talking, Lilith made sure to stay quiet. The other was so enthusiastic about her magic and Lilith was not going to stop her. And, much like a mother, she listened with pleased smile on her face the whole time, eyes sparkling with interest.
Why couldnât everyone be this excited about magic!
Lilith was going to comment when she paused but paused when Cora pulled forth a small circle. Lilith clapped her hands together and looked on proudly. Even though she had to concentrate, she made one. Most of the people she knew, both humans and demons alike, were unable to even do that anymore.
âYou have quite the talent!â Lilith said with a wide, toothy smile. âI believe I have some books that you might like to look at. They fit well with what you have told me. Also, what is this dungeons and dragons? I am not familiar with it..â she asked curiously.
âSadly, the circles do require quite a lot of concentration,â she agreed, holding out her hand and letting a circle form. âThough it was much easier than having to learn various incantations. Those are the devil,â she groaned, letting the circle dissipate with a little flair.
Seeing the pleased, motherly look on Lilithâs face nearly caused Cora to tear up. She couldnât recall getting such a look from her own biological mother and receiving it now made her want to float.Â
Lilithâs praise did wonders for her and the Sister started beaming immediately, bouncing a little on her heels. It was like being a kid again and going to visit the aunt that eventually took her in.Â
âYou would love D&D!â Cora proclaimed excitedly. âItâs a roleplaying game where you get to make your own character and go on adventures with your friends! Thereâs the DM, or Dungeon Master, sometimes theyâre called the GM or Game Master but I think DM is much better, and they write a story and lead you and your party through the adventure. You all make decisions that affect how the story goes and itâs so much fun!â She was a little breathless by the end but still enthusiastic. Maybe she should show Lilith, First Wife of Adam and devastatingly powerful demoness, some of the D&D books she had!
âI would love to look at the books you have though,â she replied when she found her senses again. âIâm always trying to get my hands on anything new relating to magic. But youâre right on the incantations, I can never remember them and those have such a tendency to go wrong if you mispronounce even one syllable.âÂ
The whole concept sounded familiar, though she couldnât quite place where she might have heard about it. Perhaps from one of the many families she had stayed with over the years.
âIt soundsâŠinteresting,â she replied. âPerhaps you could show me the ropes one day?â she suggested, though she was still unsure what exactly she was signing up for. But the exitement that Cora showed for the game had her willing to at least try it. Perhaps it would be fun.
With a smile, Lilith turned to the nearest wall and with her nail, traced out a nice sized spell circle. It glowed breifly before turning into what looked like a large black spot. Lilith stared at the spot, tapping her chin as she concentrated. Her eyes lit up after a breif moment and she reached into the hole, pulling out a tome from her collection
âA nice little shortcut spell,â she said with a smile, handing the book over to Cora. It was an older book, but well maintained. âAs well as a book I believe you may enjoy. It deals mostly with arcane magic, but it delves into other types as well. The author makes quite a few humerous jokes as well.â
Coraâs eyes were like saucers and her mouth slightly agape as Lilith reached through space to pull a book from who knows where. Flattening space like that was almost inconceivable to the human and she could have watched the trick all day.Â
âHow do I do that??â She breathed, eyes fixed on both Lilith and the wall. âYouâre like⊠wrinkling space time right?? Or like scrunching it up? Are you messing with time too? I mean I guess you are because youâre changing the amount of time it would take you to physically walk to or into the place where this book was and back so I think time applies-âÂ
Lilith had to pause the Sister so sheâd take a breath and slow down.Â
âCan⊠can you like, put yourself through? I mean, not like just your hand but your whole self and just instantly be somewhere else? Like if I wanted to be down by the lake right now I could just make a circle like that, walk through and be there?â She had a million questions, even as she gingerly took the book from the demonessâs hands and started perusing the different chapters.Â
âMuch practice,â Lilith replied with a hum, a sparkle in her eye. When was the last time sheâd been questioned like this? When had they been this enthusiastic about learning?
It had been much, much too long.
âYou can, yes. This spell, however, is a bit simpler only because I have responding spell circles littered throughout my library,â she explained, already turning back to the wall to draw out another circle.
âThese symbols here are for location,â she tapped the top of the circle, âwhich, in this case, is my rooms. The lake would be something like this...â nail on the wall, she began to draw out another incomplete symbol. This one was larger and more intricate, but still the same type of spell.
âIt does tend to use up much of oneâs stamina if one is not used to the spell type. But that is true for all spell types,â she finished, turning back to Cora with a smile. It was so easy to go off on a tangent when it came to magic, as Cora probably knew all too well. But if Cora wished, Lilith was more than happy to tell her all she knew.

Can you twerk?
âI have tried, once. I was not a fan.â
â i donât like these woods. â -satanicstfrancis
âNeither do I,â Lilith responded after a few moments of silence. The woods were typically pleasant. But now the air whipped around them as if angry and it felt as if they were being watched from every direction.
Out of habit, Lilith moved closer to Errett. Better safe than sorry when dealing with an unpredictable specter in the woods.
âI believe it would be best we find our way out quickly.â Lilith suggested, tail twitching in annoyance. Of course the woods seemed to shift when she spoke. Wonderful. It was trying to confuse them.
âI hope you do not mind mazes.â
@satanicstfrancis
Yes! I do mind! A lot! I just wanted to pick mushrooms for a stew!
But this was hardly Lilithâs fault and certainly no time to complain. She was lucky Lilith happened by. The clergy could be seen peaking up over the trees about a mile away, but Errett hadnât gone into the woods a mile. She had gone in 20 feet at most, which was considered a âsafeâ distance. Yet, somehow, the woods had swallowed them in deeper.
She felt small, standing there with her wicker basket full of morels. She almost started saying Psalms 23 before stopping herself. The one downside to her crisis of faith was the loss of her fear mantra. She supposed she could try one of the prayers to Satan that the church had, but she knew the Devil and she knew he wasnât vetting prayers either. Although, if her cell phone was working, she could have tried calling him.
She trusted Lilith, but she also wasnât giving Errett any explanation as to what was going on.
âCanât we just, you know, run back out? I can see the church.â
Errett took a step forward and the earth a few feet in front of her faulted, making it open like a great mouth ready to consume her. She yelped and jumped back, her mushrooms and basket flying to the ground already forgotten.
âThe woods that surround the church are special. Much like an enchanted forest,â Lilith explained, letting out a low warning growl as the woods let out their own noise of annoyance.
âTypically they are docile, teasing siblings when they decide to go exploring. Something has it riled up thoughâŠâ she trailed off, steadying Errett when she jumped back. Lilith rubbed her face with a long sigh. This was most definitely not âjust a little problemâ like Imperator said.
Of course.
âI am afraid we will have to go through this hellish maze to make it back home,â she muttered, shooting the woods a glare. âI do not believe they would let us just fly out or cut our way through. Too easy,â she mused, taking a moment to survey the opening they were in and the tree line. There had to be an opening somewhereâŠ
âThere,â she said, pointing to an area that was relatively still. âWe must look out for those patches. They should be our way out. Just be wary of anything you see or hear once we breach the tree line. Also watch for roots,â she explained, carefully walking towards it. When no mouth opened, Lilith let out a quick breath.
âThen I will be back to deal with the problem.â
They?
Errett almost asked her who they were, exactly, but she didnât. She realized that she probably didnât want to know.
Lilith was pointing to an area that Lilith said was âsafeâ, but Errett didnât see what she was talking about. It looked like every other party of the forest. Clearly, there was something Lilith could see that she could not.
Lilith took a step forward and Errett was right at her heels. She was too scared to worry about annoying the ghoul, so her hand was already clutching the hem of her shirt. They were so close to the entrance, but something wasnât letting them out and Lilith was taking them deeper into the woods. The air around them was tense and angry, like how a room felt before your parents started yelling at you.
Leaved and dirt moved beside them as they walk, like snakes were hiding underneath and the trees seemed to bend down like they were going to snatch the two of them up into their tree branch claws.
âIs itâŠThe Blair Witch?â she finally asked, remembering the last movie Vero had made her watch.
The question had Lilith pausing mid step as she thought about it. The Blair Witch? Wasnât that a movie? Something about a witch being angry about being disturbed, right?
âAh, no.â She said after a moment, brows still furrowed. âNot quite, at least. There was a spell cast on these woods so that no one could find the church. Over time the woods gained some sentience,â she explained, cautiously moving forward again. Around the woods seemed to shake as if pleased to hear the story. âYou have heard the stories of siblings getting lost for no reason, yes?â
Before Errett had a chance to answer, a hand-like branch shot out of the dark. It went for Errett, but Lilith blocked it quickly with her arm. A string of demonic curses slipped passed her lips as the fingers dug into her skin. Grabbing the branch with her other hand, and wrapping her tail around Errett to keep her safe, she muttered a spell and watched as the branch caught on fire and fell away.
Lilith came to the realization that this trek would be easier without her glamor which had fallen away when they were attacked. However, she wasnât entirely sure what Errettâs exposure to that was and was slightly hesitant when turning around to check on her.
At least she still looked mostly human.
âForgive this form, but it seems that it did not like my ruse.â
âOh, wow!â
Errett temporarily forgot their predicament as she stared up at Lilith. Air and Ferrus got taller when they shifted, but not that tall. She was taller than some of the younger trees! It was crazy to her, the way glamor made someone shorter. Where did the rest of a ghoul go? Or did they just shrink?
Either way, surely whatever was in the woods would knock of their games after seeing Lilith this big, right? Errett certainly felt safer now.
âCan I help?â
Right, as if the forest demon witch ghost spirit thing just needed to be milked. With no claws, teeth, or magic, she was as good as useless. Useless in the woods, useless at the lake, just a helpless little human.
There was a flash of grey between the trees. A figure in a tattered grey cloak running circles around them.
âHey!â
Errett grabbed a rock off the ground and threw it towards where the figure had disappeared.
âGet back here, you turkey! Let us go! Iâm not scared of you!â
Erretts reaction wasnât one that she had completely expected but Lilith let out a sigh of relief. This was a good thing. Not only could she (hopefully) get the two of them out of there, it also meant that there was one more person she could be herself around.
Lilith quiet for a moment after her question, trying to think of what she could help with. There was so much going on that she really couldnât think. Satan help her, she was out of practice for this type of situation.
Her sudden exclamation caused Lilith to jerk, turning to try and catch a glimpse of what Errett had seen. Her eyes saw nothing, but her ears picked up the sound of rustling leaves. The hair on the back of her neck stood and she let out a low snarl. A warning to whatever was trying to pull them away since she couldnât see them.
But why couldnât she? Four eyes made it hard for anything to hide from her unless they were really trying. Errett could see them thoughâŠ
âBe my eyes, Errett,â she finally said, maneuvering the other to stand in front of her. âI will protect and point out the correct path, but it seems someone or something is trying to hide from me. So much so they neglected to hid themselves from you.â
Lilith hadnât seen the figure? How? It had been right there! She was going to need a very long nap after all this creepy nonsense.
Cautiously, Errett started to walk forward, staying within an armâs reach of Lilith. As she walked, her eyes darted around, looking for that grey figure. The woods around them continued to rattle and shake. It seemed like it was angry that it couldnât fully disguise itself to the two of them but it wasnât quite sure what to do about it.
When the rattling stopped, Errett felt dread well up in her stomach. Her head swiveled as she looked around for the next trick. It had thought of something, or else it wouldnât have stopped. A squirrel ran up a tree next to them. Nothing odd about that. She heard a twig break to her right and she turned and spotted a rabbit in the distance. Nothing odd about-
That wasnât a rabbit, that was a hare.
âDo you see that hare?â She asked Lilith, pointing the animal out. It looked like a completely ordinary hare, except:
âHares donât live in the woods. They live on the prairie.â
And if Lilith couldnât see it, it was the grey figure trying to hide in plain sight.
Lilith stayed with Errett as they moved, catching low hanging limbs and other small annoyances.
She hadnât expected the other to stop and almost ran into her.
When she looked at where Errett pointed, she could just make out the hare. It was wrong, though. To her, it almost seemed to be glitching in and out of existence. Too many spells at once, she guessed. It was spreding itâs magic too thin.
âThey seem to be stretching themselves too thin. I can see them, but just barely,â the words were whispered as Lilith eyed the thing before her. Curious and curiouser. What did this creature want?
âLet us be,â now she spoke to it directly, standing to her full height. It was less to intimidate and more to show that she had nothing to hide. âWe have no quarell with you and have done nothing to these woods.â
There was no response. At least, not at first. With narrowed eyes, she tried again.Â
âIf not the both of us, let this one be. Allow me to speak with you proper to know your qualms. Perhaps I can help in some way.â

âYou could never know what itâs like.

âWhat types of spells do you know?
The author makes quite a few humerous jokes as well.â
âI wish it could always be like this.â
âYouâre always there for me.â
âThe stars are the only thing that makes sense.â
âThereâs more out there, you just have to be patient.â
âIt doesnât all have to be existential dread.âÂ
âYouâre so much different when weâre alone.â
âI like it when the worlds quiet.âÂ
âThereâs a place for us somewhere.â
âTheyâll name constellations after you one day.â
âYour hearts beating so fast.â
âThey donât know what they want.â
âYou donât know what you want.â
âThatâs what theyâre supposed to say.â
âWe really donât know what weâre doing.â
âI miss the old you.â
âNostalgias a trap.â
âAliens are out there.â
âDid you hear that?â
âI really want pizza right now, think itâs open?âÂ
âWhat time is it?â
âBut why would they abduct cows?â
âWeâll all be dead soon enough anyways.âÂ
âI wish we didnât have to sleep.â
âWhat do you believe in?â
âWhat happens after we die?â
âSeems like a silly thing to say, donât you think?âÂ
âAnd whatâs your excuse?â
âYouâll get it together soon.â
âSometimes I feel like Iâll never have it together.â
âItâd be better if people werenât so afraid of their feelings.â
âYou keep quiet and we both lose.â
âI wish I could save this forever.â
âWhen did you realize you were in love with me?â
âThe rooms spinning.â
âI loved you long before you knew.â
âIâm not afraid of death, I think itâll be peaceful.â
âThe Universe is too big for that.â
âDo you think weâve met in other lives?âÂ
âIâd come back to haunt you.âÂ
âWould you come back to haunt me?â
âWhatâs alternate universe you doing right now?â
âTell me a secret.â
âWhy havenât you told anyone?âÂ
âI wish we knew each other sooner.â
âYouâre a game changer.âÂ
âIâm a game changer.â
âDonât ignore fate.âÂ
âIgnorance isnât bliss.â
âWhat, is that a conspiracy theory?â
âItâs probably the Illuminati anyways.âÂ
âIâd say âfeed it to the birdsâ but I think itâd kill themâ
Vero bristled, taking her attention of her charred, collapsed attempt at a spice cake that sheâd planned on giving Cora for her birthday. Ana had made it look so easy, she thought, grumbling with her arms crossed.
âOh? And what would you know about baking, old one, demon huntress?â Vero said, a playful teasing in her voice, the quip just light enough for her to get away with with Lilith.
@a-little-ghuleh
âOh just a thing or two,â Lilith replied as she stepped closer, mirroring the others teasing tone. The cake, or what she assumed was a cake, managed to look a little worse the closer she got. Baking itself was a skill, but to do this was another skill entirely.
âWhat kind of delight were we trying to bake, hm? And how long was it left in the oven?â she asked after moving to stand next to Vero. Beneath the smell of burnt was the distinct smell of spice. Perhaps a carrot cake or something of the like?
Vero shrugged and flicked her finger against the monstrosity of a cake. The following clack of her claw against the surface told it all. Vero looked at the floor for a moment before back to Lilith. Judging by the demonessâs expression, she already knew what the half ghoul was about to say.
âYeah, so, uh, zero minutes in the ovenâŠâ she said sheepishly.Â
Lilith knew what Veroâs answer was going to be, but the admission still caused her to laugh. It was always hit or miss when it came to fire ghouls and cooking and the failures were always spectacular. Still, Vero looked bummed about the results. The least Lilith could do was help her make another.
âWell,â she began with a hum, âWhat would you say to trying again? Just with the oven this time.â
Veroâs cheeks burned red at her admission. Of course, control your heat and powers perfectly when frying an evil death horse but not the human stuck to it, but try to bake a cake at 350 for 45 minutes, and noooo. Shit becomes a molten crisp.
âOkay, so,â Vero said, pulling up a recipe on a severely cracked phone screen. âitâs an autumn spice cake. We had most of the things it says it needs, but I figured, like, baking powder and soda are just the same thing?â
Lilithâs grin and clear attempt to keep herself from bursting out laughing was a sure answer that no, they werenât.
âaaaaghhh,â Vero groaned. âI should have just stolen her one of the thousand year old wines from the cellar.â
âNot at all,â Lilith said, attempting to hide her grin behind her hand. It shouldnât really be that funny, but sheâd always found baking mishaps especially delightful. The only way it could be funnier was if Vero was covered in flour.
Perhaps she should talk to someone about that.
âYou could still take one of the wines,â she suggested, moving to lean against the counter. âA nice wine would complement an autumn spice cake quite well, really,â she mused, thinking about what would go well. A nice sweet wine, probably. The cellar might have one of those somewhere.
âIt would not take long to redo this. I can grab ingredients if need be and help if you would like,â she suggested with a warm smile.
