There have been cases in the past of sickos putting razor blades and sharp objects behind posters and stickers like this to hurt whoever tries to take them down. If you can, hair dryers work pretty well. They melt the glue and you can scrape them off easier. Same with steam.
y’all need to get yourselves a putty knife because these posts say “DON’T USE YOUR HANDS” and then they never tell you exactly what to use instead

and come in various widths, but for this purpose you only need something that’s about an inch or an inch and a half wide and metal, not plastic, because plastic is too flimsy for dealing with stickers and razor blades
you can get them at the home depot or other hardware stores for as low as $1.50 to about $7.00 for a fancypants one
to make the scraping easier, some sort of oil-based lubrication is needed, but keeping a bottle of mineral oil in your bag could spell disaster for what else is in there, so a tube of chapstick is fine.
smear chapstick all over the blade of the knife and carefully get to scraping the sticker off with it and yeah. be careful.
other tips:
you may also want to invest in a pair of leather or nylon/nitrile work gloves to afford your hands extra protection and grip if you feel like you need it (the nylon/nitrile ones may be particularly useful for disabled individuals who need a lil more dexterity - u gotta get the right size tho)
keep the gloves, putty knife, and chapstick in a gallon ziploc bag with some paper towels, alcohol prep pads, and bandaids if an accident does happen
store the knife with its blade wrapped in paper towel for safety - they’re not particularly sharp but caution is always good
and keep an empty altoids tin with you to store any blades you may find under the stickers until you find an adequate disposal area

This is your friendly neighbourhood Canadian dropping into to say that the same shit applies here. Our flag means goddamn nothing. Not unless we are willing to stand behind the beliefs and principles that our nation is free and fair - for ALL people. I live in Toronto, which is our largest city. On Friday, I stood “protection and solidarity” at a mosque that had been mobbed a week before by people trying to disrupt Muslim prayers. It broke my heart that it had happened here - that it had happened here again. Racist, anti-Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, homophobic incidents are piling up here. In class, I heard someone say that the KKK were not all that bad. I turned around to question the guy - the 24 year old white man - who’d said it. “Their economic policies are okay,” he told me. My dad is half black. I’m a queer trans person. I wanted to throw up. I know there’s no real economic policies behind the KKK. It’s the fucking KKK. “What economic policies?” I asked. He had nothing. Just like the boy who claimed he was wearing a WW2 era German infantry hat told a professor that no, no, it was from the ‘60s as soon as he was asked. Radio silence like the right-wing girl who I respect, who I have good debates with, but who stays silent when her friends ask me how the coroner would know I’m trans if chunks of my body were found in Jeffrey Dahmer’s fridge. We’re no fucking different than the US. We cannot afford to pretend that we are. Our politics and the games that are being played are the same. Pegida, an openly anti-Islam organization, marches in North York - a Toronto suburb - and there’s little coverage. A downtown mosque is “protested”. When I stand outside it to say I love and am here for the people inside, a woman tells me, in tears, how she felt her heart drop until she saw the signs that said, “We love our Muslim brothers and sisters.” Another woman asks me if she can hug me. I am offered more coffee than I can drink. There are three rounds of doughnuts from Tim Hortons, A man comes by with a massive tray of dates. Everyone leaving the mosque that Friday says thank you. I’m doing nothing but standing there to remind people they’re not alone. I came to the event alone - I make friends with three Anglican priests. One of them asks me how, as a trans and queer person who must face hate, I remain calm in the face of jerks. I don’t have a real answer. Have you heard of the Canadian Coalition of Concerned Citizens? They’re marching on city halls across the country on March 4th. M-103 is a gateway to Sharia Law. They’re wrong. If it’s needed or anyone has questions, I’ll explain why the CCCC are wrong in legal terms (basically, there’s no changes to the Criminal Code or the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, they’re just asking the government to look at hate crimes and contextualize them) but I don’t have the energy for full-depth analysis right now. They are marching in your provinces. They are marching in your streets. Their terms for signs say, “Please don’t be explicitly racist.”
THEY ARE MARCHING WHERE YOU ARE. They are there. I cannot express this enough. I am so goddamn tired lately. I’m so goddamn tired. I know we all are. My dad lives in the United States, and he talked about moving back here until he realized it wasn’t all that much better in terms of overall discrimination and rising populism. There are conservative party leaders crying, “Canadian values!” in the same way politicians in the U.S. cried for American values. We all know what that meant. It doesn’t mean anything good. Captain America stands for something else. I know that, too. “My country, right or wrong. If right, to be kept right; if wrong, to be set right.” That’s Carl Shurz. He meant it about America but it applies here, too. Don’t get misled. Set this county right. Not the way Leitch and O’Leary or Bernier want it, but the way it’s meant to be - an open, loving place where people are welcome, and where they’re not afraid to pray.
Welcome Place Needs Help

Because of the Safe Third Country Agreement signed between Canada and the United States, with a few exceptions, refugees fleeing the USA cannot claim refuge in Canada at one of our regular border crossings.
Despite protests, Trudeau and the Liberal Government are refusing to repeal the STCA.
Obviously, since the USA is no longer safe for many people, including those who had previously sought asylum there, this has become an issue.
The agreement states that:
The Safe Third Country Agreement applies only to refugee claimants who are seeking entry to Canada from the U.S.:
at Canada-U.S. land border crossings by train or at airports, only if the person seeking refugee protection in Canada has been refused refugee status in the U.S. and is in transit through Canada after being deported from the U.S.
Which leaves a loophole that goes like this: if a refugee crosses at an open place between the USA and Canada that is not an official border crossing, they will likely be taken into police custody, but have the right to apply as a refugee and have their case heard by Canadian authorities. If they go to a proper border post, they will likely be turned away.
So what’s happening now is that refugees are coming in to Canada at unsecured points along the border, at places like Emerson-Franklin, Manitoba, and Hemmingford, Quebec.
There are welcome centres set up near these places, and released refugees are given information about shelters, but the massive influx of asylum-seekers in recent weeks has worn them thin - they don’t have the resources or the person power to keep up with the need.
Welcome Place in Emerson, Manitoba is the spot being hardest-hit at the moment, I believe - refugees have been arriving with frostbite and injuries, and while other local charities have provided support and beds, and they’re working on proposals for opening public housing, it’s not enough.
Their immediate need is financial, and Welcome Place is asking for donations so they can afford to bring in more staff, find lawyers, feed and clothe those showing up.
Welcome Place has a GoFundMe set up to raise money to provide basic necessities and support for refugees arriving from the USA. As of this post, they’ve raised $14,000 of the $100,000 they’re aiming for.

dont know how to do anything? alright, stay home and start making calls to all offices non stop
everyone can help in some way
have phone anxiety? write letters to editors of local newspapers and your representatives. art more your thing? design flyers, pamphlets, brochures, posters, logos, you name it! there is so much you can do that doesn’t involve being on the front lines. you just gotta start doing it.
there are plenty of organizations who would literally love to tell you how to help planned parenthood league of women voters the aclu the naacp the hebrew immigrant aid society the big ones are probably overwhelmed with offers, but the local folks need help too. in nyc i can think of god’s love we deliver, the sylvia rivera law project, and safe horizon off the top of my head. find out where the nearest homeless shelter is, or legal aid, or domestic violence shelter, or food pantry. ask them what they need. they will have a list. last month i hosted a fundraiser for trans lifeline, they have ideas on their website. i did a play reading because theater is what i do, but you could do so many things. bake sale. car wash. charity softball league. add events to michael moore’s resistance calendar. bilingual? offer translation services to your local immigrant aid org. musician? volunteer to play at an elder care center. do well on the SATs? get in touch with your school board or library and see if they need tutors. have a license? offer to drive people to and from elections, protests, town halls, meetings with representatives. register to vote, and make your friends register too. see if you have any books that you can donate to a prison- they especially need dictionaries and how-to books, but check the guidelines of the closest org. find out when they pack things to mail and see if they could use an extra set of hands. take some time to collect canned goods, sanitary supplies, and candy from your neighborhood or friend group and drop it off at a shelter- check their website to find out what they need most. embroider words of resistance. sing songs of hope. look for the helpers, and look for what you can do to help them. you are needed. you are welcome. you are so appreciated.
in toronto: coalition against white supremacy & islamophobia no one is illegal food not bombs (may be inactive currently) SURJ (showing up for racial justice) black lives matter toronto there are lots of local shelters and relief efforts. there are so many local organizations who would love to have you. if you want to donate to food banks, please consider giving money over canned goods - at least here. i’m not sure how it is in other cities. it may not “feel” as good, but they can often buy in bulk, and they are the most equipped to know what they need. there are also a lot of group homes for young kids (who are often queer) in the city. consider calling them and asking if you can fundraise/put together baskets for them. shit like shampoo, conditioner, sanitary products, face wash - these won’t go amiss. consider buying some nice soap. sometimes little luxuries can mean the world. if you are willing and able (and safe!) at protests and demonstrations where people are being vile, you can try to observe and record those people. antifa groups in the city often do this. you can be additional eyes and a lens. contact local organizations and see what you can do for them. this is going to be a long battle on every front, in every country and every town. every little bit is going to help.
