What did you think of Jahar in high school? How was he like in class and outside of class? What do you remember of him?

Well, I only knew (and I say that loosely) Jahar for a whole academic year and hardly ever socialized with him outside the scholastic environment. I think he was a memorable character, but I didn’t know much about him other than that we shared a few mutual friends and he participated in various sports, activities and clubs. But I recall when I first met/encountered him, in an elective course we had together, the very first thing I remember was the pungent scent that just clung to him and it took me by surprise. When he swift by anywhere, he would leave like a lingering pungent trail of roasted pistachios (that’s how weed smells like to me haha!) and he would always have his ear buds in and you could just overhear the suggestive rap/hip-hop tones coming out of them. I can’t stress this enough, he was an extremely laid-back, low-pressured kind of guy. It’s almost an understatement. He wasn’t any different than most of the pupils that attend Cambridge Rindge and Latin.

In class, from what I remember, he was like errrr, well, you know that stroke-withered great-uncle no one pays attention to during family reunions who just like melds in with the furniture and background, talking to artificial ferns and eating orange Skittles or whatever? Yeah, that was Jahar. Ha ha, no I’m kidding! He was nothing like that. He had a very passive demeanor (as he did outside of class) but actively participated in group assignments and activities and I guess you can say he was a seasoned individual. I think he passed that class with flying colors because, if memory serves me correctly, he was actually the one who was exempted from coming to class and taking the final test because he got the highest score on a previous test. Yeah, actually, I’m pretty positive it was him, ha ha, I’ve forgotten about that. Smart kid.

Jahar also had a light sense of humor, too, he was like unintentionally funny. He once told me that I split my side at everything (all in good-nature) and that I would laugh at falling leaves if I could, which naturally made me dissolve into a fit of laughter. Likewise, in class, when the teacher would say ‘get in groups’, he would like silently grunt to himself ‘urgh, I hate people’ or ask if it’s okay to use a highlighter or a crayon to complete an assignment; just very silly antics. He was a really cool freshman.
