FAWM Update 1

Yesterday (kind of, it was really a week ago), I started writing an album. So far I’ve had a bunch of thoughts about writing and the whole process.

- There’s this lag between having an idea and realizing the idea in midi/sounds/drumming

- I have been pulling from sound banks that I’ve never used before but have already gained some perspective on which sounds work and which aren’t going to cut it

- Mixing is going to take ages. To go quickly, I’m writing everything without transitions or fx and using a rough mix (thx ozone presets!)

- I don’t give two shits about complex sound design! Saw waves all the way

- Layering (shouts out edmproduction subreddit as it’s your motto)

- Kontakt factory lib is A HIDDEN SECRET, NO JOKE!!!

re: javascript ecosystem

I picked up Node.js the Right Way and hope it will remedy my concerns.

However this morning I’ve been reading about the consternation felt by JavaScript developers about module syntaxes. How there are several of them all claiming to solve the same issue.

I use r.js and the define syntax but I’ve seen drawbacks to this already. Mostly that things would be simpler if I were able to use CommonJS (module.exports) syntax everywhere.

I think I’ll read this book and see how this changes things. A better understanding of the usage of Node should lend itself to hopefully a better understanding of what is now a strange ever-changing world.

How does anyone expect us to keep up with all of this? Does anyone really have a firm grasp of what is going on with JavaScript these days?

When I first started doing web development, the common issue and complaint is that there are all these browsers that have implemented web standards differently. Great, so we started to tackle that issue with cross-browser frameworks.

But lately it feels like people are just making it harder for everyone. There’s a desire to advance the JavaScript programming language, so we have new language features in new versions of ES. But now we have so many different tooling options for build systems, transpilers, and the like that we’ve made it even harder to write good JavaScript than it was in 2008.

Anyway my point is it’s all fucked. I don’t know how anyone remembers all of this on a daily basis and stays productive at the same time.

Our node_modules folder for the entire browse experience at Best Buy is 314 MEGABYTES. What in the actual shit is all of that doing.

A lot of it is of course important, and with the way that JavaScript libraries are developed, it’s natural we have a lot of deps, many of which are not necessarily included on every page.

The barrier to entry in JavaScript dev is immensely high now. I don’t even know where to begin honestly. I’m hedging my bets on a few promising technologies and we will just have to see how that plays out, since I can’t learn them all.

I have been using sends as mix busses. This helps quite a bit for a few reasons:

1. since I use VolumeShaper on each bus, tracks are grouped by their rhythmic feel

2. Because of #1, I have freedom to route a track to both a time-based effect such as delay or reverb as well as it’s own sidechain bus. This means that its time-based effects can have a separate rhythm based on the sidechain on those corresponding effects.

3. routing to multiple busses with a -inf to 0 slider is just mix heaven, really nice fine tuning ability. It’s like parallel processing on steroids

So far so good. Only drawback is Groups are pretty much useless since those effects are only applied to tracks going to the master through the group
