I was looking for part 5 Polnareff references lately when I noticed a detail on his golden shoulder pads

Po and Po?

I looked some more and it is in the manga design as well:

Araki only drew the Po and Po higher up, with a neat Silver Chariot truncated sword going through it

Oh that’s nice, right? And it’s a callback to the Jojos who wore “Jo” or “Jojo” or variations of “JO JO JO JO” on their official designs or their cover/promotion designs.

Polnareff becomes PoPo I guess, by the same logic? Or at least, if we only consider what we see: there are only 2 Po, so anyone encountering the guy would be able to put the “Po” with the “Po”. Some might not, some could say it’s meant to be read separately. Still, the possibility someone will take in both in a glance and string them together is there.

I don’t speak for every french-speaking immature nobody in the world, but there is a reason this would not be my preferred nickname for Polnareff. Because here’s what POPO would evoke to a frenchman, and yes, Polnareff is a frenchman:

Yep, popo can be understood as poo poo. Poo poo man Polnareff.

But who knows. Maybe he didn’t think it through when he picked his secret informant clothes and didn’t think some would read both shoulderpads. Maybe he had no clue he would advertise being the poopooman again…

Or maybe Polnareff rolled into a goldsmith’s shop and demanded to have gold shoulderpads that say Poopoo made for him. Perhaps it was his own request. Maybe his obsession with toilets got him good, in the end.
