Dave Grohl opened by saying he was the quiet one in Nirvana. âI was the drummer. But most of you donât know that I was the fifth drummer of Nirvana. For whatever reason, I got to be the luckiest person in the world and also be in Nirvana. â
Giving credit where it is due he continued âBut I have to give credit to all of the other drummers that came before me: Aaron Burckhard, thank you very much. Dale Crover, from the Melvins, who is my absolute drumming hero. Chad Channing, who was the drummer for Nirvana. Chad, where are you? I know that youâre here somewhere. Isnât Chad here somewhere? Chadâs around here, isnât he? Are you over there? Hey, Chad! So, hereâs the thing, guess what Chadâs responsible for? If you listen to a song like "In Bloom", thatâs Chad. When I joined the band, I had the honour of playing Chadâs parts, so Chad, thank you very much for allowing me to play your drum parts; I appreciate that very, very much. Dan Peters, from Mudhoney, who got to play one show with Nirvana thank you, Danny. â Respect to you Dave for honouring all predecessors who paved the way.
He continued by sharing early touring survival stores and young musical influences and motivated the crowd by saying that if you have a poster of a rock musician on your bedroom wall, it should not intimidate you, but serve to inspire you, that you should look at that poster and say to yourself, âthatâs what Iâm going to do someday!â Â
Bassist Krist Novoselic shared that Nirvana fans walk up to him every day and thank him for the music. He brought a tear to the eyes of the crowd by continuing with âWhen I hear that, I think of Kurt Cobain. I want to say thank you to Kurt Cobain, and I wish Kurt was here tonight, OK? And that music means so much to so many people, and thereâs new generations and new fans coming up, and itâs really powerful. Kurt was an intense artist and he really connected with a lot of people."
"With Nirvana, we started in Aberdeen, Washington â in Washington state â and we had a infrastructure there to support us. It was a music community. I want to thank Sub Pop Records; the music community in Seattle, in Washington State. I want to thank Buzz Osborne â thank you, Buzz, for joining us in punk rock music. I want to thank Jack Endino, who recorded our first record. Steve Albini and Butch Vig. Thank you Susan Silver for introducing us to the music industry properly. And thank you all again."
Kurtâs mother, Wendy and his sister Kimberly were also on stage and his mum stated simply that she loves and misses him, and how Kurt would have appreciated everyone being here on this night. There was not a dry eye in the Barclays Center. She continued, "Iâm probably going to cry. Iâm already crying because heâd be so proud â heâd say he wasnât â but he would be. I just miss him so much. He was such an angel. Thank you."
Courtney Love then spoke and said that she wished Kurt was here to do this and hugged Dave and Krist. She contined that she had a big speech prepared but that  she was not gonna say it. âThis is my family Iâm looking at right now â all of you. Brother Michael, Brother Krist, Grandma Wendy, Mr. Grohl. David!â
She spoke with calm and dignity despite the boos and jeers from the crowd which all ceased by the time she finished speakingâ  And thatâs it. I just wish that Kurt was here to feel this and be this. Twenty years ago, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame maybe wasnât â but tonight, he would have really appreciated it. He wouldâve appreciated Krist and Dave and Michael and his mother and his sisters being here. And I just want to give this to Frances, our daughter, whoâs not here because sheâs ill. Thatâs it âthatâs all I have to say. Thank you so very much.â
