What’s this blog about?

This is a side blog of mine that I’m dedicating to collecting the various One-Punch Man fan translations and transcripts made over the years  that are in danger of being lost as archives get shut down and people move onto other things.

There are often many versions of the same chapter because each translator has their own quirks and I find it useful to compare texts sometimes.  I hope that it’s interesting to people looking at translations, for coming back to appreciate nuances in translation that might not have been caught by the official translations. And of course, fanfic writers.

Entries are tagged by type (transcript, scanslation), source (manga, webcomic),  and chapter number.

You’re welcome to ask me questions, but please note that my understanding of Japanese is very limited.

Case in point:  Garou commenting on Metal Bat’s choice of weapon in chapter 58.  Top:  Viz (official translation) changes it to Garou commenting on Metal Bat himself, which stores up confusion for later.

The One Punch Man Maji CD Drama tracks are all about 20 minutes long and contain so much new information! The Parallel Universe Middle School drama track is about Saitama and Genos meeting in middle school and sit next to each other in the same classroom. Saitama is a transfer student who helped Genos out on the first day of school.

Here’s an excerpt that I put together from the Drama Track, which starts after Saitama saves Genos from a monster who was attacking him. Enjoy~

Genos: He defeated the monster in one punch!?

Saitama: Hey, you okay, Blondie?

Genos: What is this, this strength! The kind of immense strength I’ve been aiming for!

Saitama: Eh?

Genos: Saitama-kun, you really were not kidding when you said you were a hero for a hobby!

Saitama: Yeah, that’s what I’ve been saying from the beginning..

Genos: Saitama-san, no, Saitama-sensei! Please let me be your disciple!

Saitama: Eh? Oh…uh…nope.

Genos: Why not?!

Saitama: Why? Because I’m not looking for disciples, uh…what’s your name?

Genos: I’m Genos, Saitama-sensei!

Saitama: Hey, can you stop calling me Sensei?

Genos: I understand, Sensei.

Saitama: I appreciate your answer, but you totally are not listening to me, are you?

Genos: I am in your care!

Genos: By the way, Sensei, you mentioned you had something of mine?

Saitama: Oh yeah! Here, your right hand! I was looking for it for you.

Genos: You…you mean, you came here faster than anyone else…for me?

Saitama: Yeah.

Genos: Sensei!!!

Saitama: So then, please do my homework!

Genos: Why of course, Sensei!

Here’s a small excerpt from One Punch Man Chapter 124, with Saitama worrying over Genos. The context is that King was over at Saitama’s apartment playing video games when he gets a phone call from the Hero Association about a threat that is currently being dealt with by an S-Class Hero. 

King asks Saitama where is Genos, and he mentions that Genos hasn’t been home all night. After hearing about the threat being confronted with an S-Class hero, Saitama imagines what would happen if Genos gets wrecked again and decides to go to make sure he doesn’t get hurt (THE EGG CARES FOR THE TOASTER SO MUCH). Also, random, but why is Saitama picturing Genos naked in his mind lol?

Blast from the past! Back in the 'good' ol' days, manga updates were both spotty AND short. It felt a bit of a miracle when chapters longer than 20 pages started.

And then kept growing.

In a way, the current spate of short updates is a return to baseline, only with a consistent release schedule.

Just wanted to add that Saitama was trying to be funny by making a pun with his “You were dazzling” line because 眩しい can mean either dazzling or blinding (i.e. if something is too bright and causes you to squint, you would say it’s “眩しい/blinding”). Ba dum tss…

The Mob Psycho 100 Fan Book: pgs 109~111

Here we have Serizawa's notes on past Spirts and Such cases! It's kind of interesting to see them all through Seri's eyes, including the ones he wasn't actually present for.

For page 110, I feel it's extra important to remember that Japanese reads right to left, so the columns should be read in that order. Hopefully it's not too confusing.

Also, a kunekune is a slender, paper-like white spirit that appears in fields on hot summer days.

The Mob Psycho Fan Book: Once more, from the top!

Having gone back and completed all those profiles I skipped, I've now returned to the very beginning of the book and will keep translating more or less in order. (Unless someone has a specific request--then I'll translate that first 😘 The fan book begins with a gallery of ONE-sensei's color illustrations, along with fan art and praise from other manga artists. I think it's easy to look at ONE's art and think, "Oh, this guy doesn't have any natural artistic talent" (and indeed, many people have said exactly that), but I disagree. I adore his expressive character designs, his compositions, his excellent sense of visual comedy, and how his style is immediately recognizable. It also has a lo-fi, underground, sort of punk rock quality to it that I find immensely appealing.
