real talk though I was a young teen who was very into dear evan hansen through all of high school and I had the basic "complex anti hero" view on evan but then the first time I heard a full audio bootleg with andrew barth feldman I had such a strong "jesus christ That's A Child 😬" reaction that it completely changed my take on the whole show after already having been a fan of it for three years. when evan is played by an actor who actually is (or at least passes for) a teenager it stops being a dark comedy/drama and becomes a two hour slow burn psychological horror about the very real dangers of neglect.

like not to go all "he's just a little guy and it's his birthday" but this is a wholly different show depending on whether you can really feel the age of the teen characters. especially in scenes with any of the parents, the dynamics and the miscommunications have this gravity and air of desperation that imo only fully comes out if you get that these are children trying to process some of the heaviest emotions out there and something really bad is going to happen if they can't get on the same page with their parents for support.
