The destruction of the ‘Texas’ locomotive in Buster Keaton’s masterpiece The General (1926) was the single most expensive shot in silent cinema history. After the stunt, the wreckage of the locomotive and the bridge remained at the bottom of the river until it was dragged up as part of the WWII scrap metal drive.
