"Here." Some paperwork is handed to her - along with a mere brush of his fingers along hers as he does so. Her fingers are soft, he notes & he places said hand into his pocket, an attempt at appearing casual & relaxed. "I don't think I have an excuse this time. I'm still trying to come up with a good one."
“At least you’re earlier than last time.”
Almost robotically, she accepts the documents, sliding them into some folder or another. It’s been a long day and her back hurts; that, along with how long the moon was hanging above the night sky, serving as signs that she might as well call it a night.
For now, she props her elbows onto the desk, eyeing Kakashi for a quick second before speaking. ( there is the faintest glint of mischief held within her dark eyes, nude lips curling into the slightest of smirks. )
Is it nerves that she senses? How odd that so long ago, it was she whose stomach would fill with butterflies in the other’s presence But she was often the first to ease into comfort with any sort of relationship; her friendship with Konoha’s silver fox ( or should she say hound? ) was no exception.
The physical contact he had engaged in was not missed. Smooth hands, free of callouses, went together with sensitivity. It’s enough to bring a hint of color to her cheeks.
"No excuse? That’s so unlike you, Kakashi-san.” she answers, a hand coming to stifle the quiet, odd laugh that his presence had provoked. That as well as to give her few precious seconds, allowing the blush to fade in due time.
”Maybe you could… think of one on your way home? It’s rather late out. You should get to sleep.”
And her desires are left unfulfilled once again. There’s a reminder that she gives herself that they are friends; newly-made friends, if she has to specify. Moving too swiftly would scare him off, no doubt.. His touch, while she could perceive it in any way she wished, was a signal of his growing comfort with her; the growth of bonds from strangers to that of trusted comrades.
If she was to befriend him, there could be no treating him as if he was like the other men, the other people which she had known in all her life.
And her one-sided attraction was to be stifled; there were much more important matters to be attended to at this time.
The load of the burden he carried had manifested itself onto her, shoulders beginning to sag as exhaustion, fatigue piled. There was no response from her comrade; it seemed as if the lack response ( the numbness which ached him to his very core. ) was taking its own toll on her. Yet, she was stalwart when faced with such fiendish opposition, especially when said hostilities dared to attack those whom she cared for.
It is the code of the medical ninja the keeps her strength plentiful.
It is the code of someone who knows pain; of one who wishes to shield another
from such destruction of the soul.
Lifelessness captures Kakashi's gaze.
It is a look she knows only too well.
Only unexpected from the copycat.
As he only increases gradually in weight, her initial response is to let go, as is any human's. It is the desire to escape hurt, be that of her own or another's. Logic and heart play hand-in-hand for her decision.
Her kimono's silky touch graces his paled skin, her touch wrapped fully around him. She tightens it with his trust in her growing, finding some amount of comfort in his icy, numb, unrequited warmth. If it is from him, even the alcohol bears a scent as if from the heavens themselves.
Maybe she was glorifying Hatake but to survive what had
wrought his mind had to be the mark of greatness, of
divinity watching over his masked face.
If she was holding him high on a pedestal, it was only natural that her view would be challenged; darkness taking the bait she held out.
But she was no victim to be swallowed whole.
For one final time, a voice passes from his lips, a relief from the chilled air of the late night. With the moon hanging above them, full and round, she can make out the hazy fog coming from his masked mouth, the silhouette of moving lips.
"━I know. It's all right." she breathes out, voice ever so hushed.
Ever the cautious one. Maybe the eyes of the Hatake truly saw all.
With surprising resilience, she holds his body, stumbled by the force which of his mind, vanquishing his consciousness.
But she is proud. Kakashi has won this bout.
And she summons a shadow clone to aid in the endeavor of carrying him to her home. Her bed was uninhabited; Kakashi's would be the only soul to sleep between the thick covers, tucked-in securely. He was to be handled as he had deserved so many times before ━ as an invaluable man who was marked as fragile.
After the war, Shizune takes the responsibility of leading the medical branch of Konohagakure, inheriting the position from Tsunade as to allow her mentor time for much-needed rest. ( not to mention, the Hokage's energy needed to be spent on more pressing matters. a time of peace did not mean a time without diplomacy nor negotiation. ) There, she takes Sakura under her wing, training her so that in the next few years, it would be Sakura who would be the leader of the medical staff within Konoha.
With three talented kunoichi making sure to keep them working efficiently, word quickly spreads throughout the peaceful shinobi world that the world's best hospitals are located in Konohagakure. From across the world, more serious ailments are treated within Konoha hospitals. This efficiently raises prices of care, sometimes affecting the quality of treatment as well as overcrowding occurring. Tensions rise due to these developments; other villages are angry that Konoha is stealing away its patients while the people of Konoha, specifically shinobi, wish for their own hospital bills to not be raised due to the actions of outsiders taking advantage of their medical care.
