Being reagents in love is the ultimate forbidden love trope. You live in the facility where you're not alone even when you sleep. Cameras everywhere, they're watching and grading your every step. And don't be fooled, you're not safe from this even in the sleeprooms. Reagents canonically make friends with eachother but we saw how dangerous love is with Doris and Henrietta. Her loyalty was so strong she wasn't even good for an expop. Murkoff has to exploit Henrietta's love to use her against reagents.

You're loyal to Dr. Easterman, you're loyal to Murkoff. Not your friends. Not your love. If you turn around and kill them with a knife Dr. Easterman will be pleased, and you're closer to getting out. If not, you might be closer to getting your limbs torn out.

That is, if they even know about your relationship. Stealing kisses from blind areas amongst multiple rotting corpses because that's the best you can afford. The fact you can wake up and your partner might not be in their room anymore. Either of you can die anytime in the trials. Or they just put you down to study your brain and your efforts were for nothing.

But despite everything you still can't help but love them.
