Inside a Laptop – Basic Components
This is the inside of the System 76 Galago UltraPro laptop. It runs Ubuntu Linux out of the box, and has all-around good specs. And here it is taken apart.
Battery – The battery is the black box in the image. It is a 6 cell Lithium Ion Battery.
Hard Drive – The hard drive is the silver rectangle in the image. There are two types of hard drives: Solid State Drives (SSD) and Hard Disk Drives (HDD). The HDD is made of spinning plates that are magnetized to store information. The SSD are flash memory, and are made of chips. The hard drive pictured is a SSD.
Fans – The two fans at the top of the computer (the circles with the green stickers on the middle) are part of the cooling system for the computer. They circulate air through the computer. Along with heat sink, which draws the heat from the center of the computer to the edges. It is important that the computer does not overheat because it can do permanent damage to the components.
CPU – The Central Processing Unit performs all of the processing for the computer. The CPU executes all of the operations necessary to run software, or even start up the computer. It is located on the blue board in the image above.
RAM – Random Access Memory is a form of data storage. It allows the computer to temporarily store the information that it needs as it executes the commands that the user gives it. The random access aspect of it means that it can be read and written out of order. Unfortunately in this laptop, the RAM is located under the keyboard and is not visible in any of these images.
