Walter Meets Jade

Well, well, well, look who showed up to work like two weeks late! Seriously, I was doing recon around the building a month before this internship even began. I hope you can keep up with me, Jade!

As you can tell, Walter isn’t really great with people. In fact, thanks to him we have enjoyed getting kicked out of three different restaurants, two gas stations, a handful of meetings and a bank, all because of his antics (stories for a later date).

Any who, we all are very excited to welcome Jade, the copywriting intern! Jade has finally joined the team, as she was finishing up school and becoming a graduate from Savannah College of Art and Design.

The first day, we made a point to help Jade feel right at home, but Walter just wasn’t playing nice. It’s hard enough to adjust to the fast-paced Intermark Group internship lifestyle, but when you add Walter to the mix, it makes our jobs 10 times harder. Poor Jade, we should have warned her.

During her first week here, Jade entered what we like to call “Stage One”. This is the stage when you start feeling bad for the poor guy, so you begin to ask questions:

Why don’t we add him on our intern GroupMe chat?

How come he didn’t come to hang posters with us around town?

Why does he only eat carrots?

However, that stage quickly passes once you have your first real conversation with Walter. Then it’s on to stage two, which is pretty much when Jade’s search history looked like this:

By the end of the week, Jade had made it all the way to stage three, the stage in which you remain until you somehow get Walter out of your life. Stage three is also known as the stage of acceptance because eventually, it’s too hard to fight with Walter and do a good job at work. Now that we’re all in stage three of dealing with Walter, we can focus on our next big challenge for the summer:

Food Find Fridays

A Taste of the Magic City

Not only are the six of us lucky enough to work at one of the leading advertising agencies in the Southeast, Intermark Group, but we’re also getting to explore one of the coolest cities in the state of Alabama while we’re here.

We thought it’d be fun to explore Birmingham one lunch at a time, and we’re taking you along for the ride!

Our first stop on this journey is El Barrio, a Mexican restaurant and bar, set on trendy 2nd Ave N. This hidden gem is within walking distance from our office, so it was an obvious choice for us to begin “testing the waters” and venture out on our own for the first time.

The Food

Spicy Chicken Tostada

When we first arrived to El Barrio, we were seated at a large “picnic-style” table in the center of the restaurant. We were served ice water and we ordered tortilla chips with a spicy salsa and queso fundido dip. We quickly devoured our appetizer while sharing stories of our interviews for the Intermark Group internship. Finally, it was time to get down to business, and dig in!

After one bite, we could tell that we’d stumbled upon a delicious new favorite. Silence fell over our table as we quickly ate bite after bite -- finally, a break from the brown-bag lunches our “college kid” budgets afforded us! A chorus of “yums” broke the silence, and we began exclaiming how good everything was.

Our Interactive intern, Shelby, confided, “I’m not a huge guacamole fan, but this pairs nicely with the carnitas!”

“The avocado was perfect. The entire salad was delicious and full of flavor! said the Account Service intern, Julie, about her chopped romaine and spinach salad with shrimp.

The entire lunch was a definite big thumbs up from our group. Even though we’ve vowed to try a new spot each week, we have a feeling that we’ll be back to El Barrio again before the summer is over!

The Takeaway

El Barrio exceeded all of our expectations, and we can definitely see what all the office hype was about! We’ve decided that their tortilla chips and yummy salsa will become a staple of our intern diet while we are here at Intermark.

All in all, this was a great first trip into the Birmingham food scene, and it definitely made us hungry for more! Meet Walter...

Although we considered sparing you the time of meeting Walter, he just wouldn’t let it go. Normally, we would report someone like Walter to the authorities, but we’ve come to the conclusion that he isn’t going anywhere. He’s also pretty harmless, if you don’t take him too seriously.

So here’s the scoop…

Wannabe Walter is the seventh “intern” at Intermark Group. Sure, he was never offered an actual position, but that didn’t stop him: he took it upon himself to create his own. Sound annoying? You have no idea. He claims to have multiple degrees -- some of which are in advertising, marketing, PR, and computer science. But to be honest, we aren’t sure if Walter even finished high school. Though we all look pretty young and naive, we weren’t born yesterday and we know that nothing Walter says is true.

We first noticed Walter during introductions at orientation. Being new to Intermark Group, we had an orientation when we put names with faces and got to know each other over lunch. We weren’t expecting a seventh intern so when we asked Walter what position he was going to fill, this is all we got:

“CEO,” he snorted.

At first we thought he was just breaking the ice and we all rolled our eyes and giggled. But as time went on, we noticed that Walter does try to be our boss from time to time. During the first week of work, he tried to complete our projects for us because we weren’t “doing it right,” and then he had the audacity to give Julie, the Account Service intern, a citation for chewing gum as if he was the hall monitor! We really did try to get rid of him. Each of us tattled to our managers, ignored him, and even uninvited him to lunch. Nothing will get this wannabe to give up his quest to work at Intermark Group!

“You know, guys,” said our PR intern, Maria, at lunch one afternoon, “if we can’t beat him, we might as well let him join us!”

So, we eventually came to embrace Walter and all of his weird quirks. We don’t necessarily associate with him, but we just let him do his thing and try to not get in his way. So there you have it; that’s pretty much all we know about the kid. We expect that all you Intermarkers will be seeing a lot more of Walter in the near future, and if you have the misfortune of meeting him, do not give him your email address. In the meantime, keep an eye out for him around the office and if you see him doing something wrong, let us know!

INTERMARK GROUP WELCOMES ITS SUMMER 2015 INTERNS!

Things are heating up this summer at Intermark Group as we are excited to welcome our 2015 summer interns. Our interns will get the opportunity to bring their fresh ideas to the table and work hands-on at our agency. These bright young minds will be hard at work collaborating, developing ideas, creating content and pitching to a diverse range of clients. How exciting!

On top of their daily work, our interns will get a taste of real agency life by working closely with Golden Flake. That’s right! These interns will have a lot of work on their hands…along with maybe some snack crumbs. These six go-getters will be working with the client while interacting with our management in multiple departments. This interaction will enable the interns to gather real-world experience and allow them to grow in terms of future business potential.

“You will be asked to learn in three months what most people cover in their first few years in the industry. It will mean long hours, intensive study and tireless effort,” said Jake McKenzie, CEO at Intermark Group. “While it may sound daunting, the results will be invaluable.”

With that being said, we warmly welcome our interns and are thrilled to have them on the team! We thought it might be fun for you all to get to know our interns.

Shelby Brownell, Digital Account Service Intern

Education: Senior at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, double majoring in marketing and industrial distribution.

Interesting Fact: I will be completing a lifelong goal of meeting the sea otters at Georgia Aquarium’s Sea Otter Experience in June!

Maria Bowman, Public Relations Intern

Why Intermark Group? This internship is a great opportunity for me to work with a variety of clients and build my career upon doing so. Intermark Group inspires young professionals to want to use their creativity to produce great work.

Education: University of Alabama graduate, majored in PR with a minor in business administration.

Hometown: Dothan, Ala.

Interesting Fact: I was born in Lima, Peru.

Jade Chesser, Copywriting Intern

Why Intermark Group? One of the things that really stood out to me about Intermark Group was their emphasis on having a great insight and implementing that into their work.

Education: Savannah College of Art and Design graduate, Bachelor of Fine Arts in advertising.

Hometown: Huntsville, Ala.

Interesting Fact: I spent two months in a medieval village in Lacoste, France, during my study abroad, where I tried to overcome my addiction to French scarves.

Education: Samford University graduate, majored in journalism and mass communications.

Education: Senior at the University of Alabama, majoring in advertising with a minor in studio art.

Interesting Fact: I’ve been kissed by a seal.

Hillary McDaniel, Creative Design Intern

Why Intermark? I think it is fantastic to see an agency in Alabama doing really creative things to enhance brands and connect to an audience. I have experienced places before that focus primarily on the end product, and not so much on the concept or big idea. I knew that interning at Intermark would help me grow and polish my skills in order to better prepare me for a career as an art director.

Education: University of Alabama graduate, Bachelor of Communication Arts.

Hometown: Prattville, Ala.

Interesting Fact: I was able to visit France for a week for FREE in high school. How, you ask? I entered a painting in a nationwide scholarship competition and won. Now I’m currently scheming a way to get to Italy for free using a sketchbook.
