for the college q&a: would love any tips you have for essays and on how to stay organized through the process!
Hello! I’ve kind of been answering these q&a questions while clearing out my inbox, since I made that post about a year ago and never quite got enough questions to make an official post. To answer your question, I definitely think time management is key. I took a free period my senior year of high school and used this time as a “college application” period where I would work on essays or research schools. To stay organized, I recommend making a spreadsheet to keep track of your applications, due dates, and essays. I used a spreadsheet and found it extremely helpful - I can make a master post on how to make this if that is something people would be interested in.
In terms of essays, I think the most important aspects are to (1) Avoid cliches (2) Show not tell and (3) Tell your story. First, although it might be hard to consider if an idea is cliche, try to avoid finding ideas online and be original. Colleges do not want to see the same essay written 100 times! I know sometimes it can be tempting to reference “essays that worked lists,” but remember, you are an individual and using cliche essays won't set you apart! Second, live by the phrase “show not tell.” Replace phrases such as “I am a natural leader” or “I am passionate about medicine,” with short anecdotes from your life (a sentence or two long) which show through experiences how these phrases are true; for example, if I tell a story about leading a club and organizing the largest event yet, the admissions office knows that I am a leader, I’m not just saying it. Finally, use your essays to tell your individual story. Choose topics that reveal things about yourself which won’t be mentioned in your application or recommendations at other points. Think about what new unique aspects of your life you can bring to the table!
